- TriviaThis film is sometimes mentioned as one of Arthur Lake's "Horace in Hollywood" films, but it is not. Lake made 13 of the Horace films, which were all directed by Edward Ludwig as Edward I. Luddy. This comedy short, in which Lake plays a character named Arthur (not Horace as listed o IMDb), was directed by Sam Newfield.

Enjoyable enough...though not many laughs.
"Night Owls" is a most unusual comedy because it's a silent from the USA in 1929 and by 1929 nearly all the movies were talkies or at least partial talkies. My guess is that the studio (Universal) didn't have a lot of confidence in the film so they simply released it as is...many other films of the year were actually retrofitted (badly) with sound in order to appeal to the public and their insatiable desire for sound movies.
The story is about a rebellious rich daughter who, instead of buckling down in school, is man-crazy for Horace (Arthur Lake of the "Blondie and Dagwood" films). Despite being only about 10 minutes long, the film packs a lot of stuff into it...including Horace sneaking into a girls dorm dressed as a lady and sneaking aboard the ship his girlfriend is on with her father. Silly and mildly enjoyable but no more. I really think if the film had been a bit longer and given better comedic timing, it would have been much better. As is, it's a time-passer.
