Taiwanese screenwriter and director Su Chao Bin wrote this Ming Dynasty wuxia drama primarily for Michelle Yeoh to star in. According to Su and producer Terence Chang, the approach was to do a story in the style of Gu Long's wuxia, populated with multiple characters plus a touch of suspense and mystery. Producer John Woo's input is mainly as an adviser, but he did direct one action scene which featured his daughter and thereby also credited as co-director. Su won the Best Director award for his effort at the 17th Hong Kong Film Critics Society Awards.

Rep. Billy Long (R-Mo.) on Wednesday blamed mass shootings on the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion.
“When I was growing up in Springfield, you had one or two murders a year,” he said on Columbia, Missouri’s 93.9 The Eagle. “Now, we have two, three, four a week. So, something has happened to our society. I go back to abortion — when we decided it was Ok to murder kids in their mothers’ wombs. Life has no value to a lot of these folks.”

Having two action experts in the starring roles helped stunt coordinator Timothy Eulich make mayhem in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” which features Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan jumping through a manic multiverse created by Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, the directing duo known as the Daniels.
In the A24 film, now in theaters, Yeoh plays Evelyn, a laundromat owner and mother who navigates the changing scenarios to save her family, including Quan as her husband, Waymond, and ends up with a new outlook on life and love. Key props: a fanny pack that’s used as a martial arts weapon and a butt plug-shaped IRS Auditor of the Year trophy that’s a portal to other dimensions.
Eulich, who has collaborated with the Daniels for 11 years, including on 2016’s “Swiss Army Man,” is familiar with their M.O. He spent several weeks working with them to visualize the scenes.

In Jorge Gutierrez’s Netflix fantasy epic “Maya and the Three,” audiences are transported to a lush world of intricate design and carefully crafted mythology. The series, which dropped Oct. 22, follows Eagle warrior princess Maya of Teca (voiced by Zoe Saldana) as she teams up with three warriors from neighboring kingdoms to trek into the underworld and battle against sinister gods.
Drawing influence from Mesoamerican history, art and culture, Gutierrez and his creative team developed a striking fantasy world to suit their ambitious story. Four primary locations serve as anchors: the sprawling Kingdom of Teca, the magical Luna Island, the mysterious Jungle Lands and the towering Golden Mountains. Each draw from different cultures themselves: Aztec, Caribbean, Mayan and Incan civilizations, respectively.
In creating “Maya,” Gutierrez and cultural consultant Sandra Equihua consciously aimed to turn the Mexican history they’d learned in school on its head. This is a history Gutierrez...

Executive has spent 14 years at the studio.
Nicola Pearcey, longtime president of Lionsgate UK and Europe, is leaving the company after 14 years to “pursue new opportunities”.
A replacement has yet to be announced for Pearcey, who will step down from her role at the end of 2020. The moves comes less than four months since Lionsgate revealed Zygi Kamasa was to exit his role as CEO of Lionsgate UK and Europe after 15 years, with Pearcey taking on his duties.
The brace of high-profile departures indicate Lionsgate may be moving away from the UK production space to instead focus on handling major releases for its parent company.

With production backing from The History Channel, Barbara Kopple’s sweeping, objective examination of the failed 1980 rescue attempt of the U.S. hostages in Iran under the Carter administration, Desert One, is an absorbing all-sides look at one of the most infamously botched military missions in our nation’s history. Combining talking heads from both U.S. and Iranian viewpoints, in addition to animated interludes by Iranian artist Zartosht Sotani, Desert One might be too conventional in its approach, but it is nevertheless an absorbing documentary.
Eschewing her usual vérité approach, Kopple dives headfirst into the historical context, exploring the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini after the overthrow of the Iranian Shah, long considered a puppet of American interests. Zeroing in on President Carter’s humanitarian approach to global relations, Kopple quickly jumps into the takeover of the American embassy and the forced confinement of 52 Americans by Iranian captors. In response,...

With the pact, which was completed in late July, Eagle’s library swells to around 1,450 movies. The company has an output deal with Sky Italia and has arranged for the broadcaster to take on a handful of the recent M2 titles.

Thor 4 director Taika Waititi has been playing down reports that he's set to helm a new Star Wars movie.
Taika Waititi keeps going from strength to strength, riding a wave of love, support and awards in the months following the release of his latest film, Jojo Rabbit.
Though his features Boy and Eagle vs. Shark had been warmly received by critics and audiences alike during the early stages of his directing career, his star really began to rise after mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, which has since spawned several spinoff TV series, arrived in 2014. The movie became an instant cult classic, and Marvel jumped on the Waititi bandwagon soon after, hiring him to direct the third film in the Thor franchise, Thor: Ragnarok. His deft touch went on to lift the God of Thunder's new solo outing into the stratosphere.
It was no surprise, then,...

The unofficially-styled DC Extended Universe that began with Zack Snyder’s 2013 film Man of Steel before faltering through his ambitious but fractiously-received Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and his incompletely-realized Justice League seems to have finally regained its footing in its post-Steppenwolf era with the franchise’s first billion-dollar blockbuster, Aquaman, and this year’s highly-anticipated Patty Jenkins-helmed sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.

Luke Goss has been cast as the villain in the Samuel L. Jackson-Eugene Levy starrer The Man for New Line Cinema. Les Mayfield is directing, and Rob Fried and Bill Strauss are producing. The comedy sees bumbling salesman Levy stumble into an ATF sting. The Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms agent (Jackson) realizes he needs to take on the mild-mannered milquetoast as his ersatz partner in order to bring down the drug lord (Goss). Penned by Jim Piddick and Margaret Oberman and rewritten by Steve Carpenter, the project is budgeted in the mid-$20 million range and starts production April 17. Kent Alterman, Michele Weiss and Keith Goldberg are overseeing for the studio. The British actor is best known to American audiences for playing Nomak, the villain in New Line's Blade 2. He also appeared in David Goyer's indie feature ZigZag. He stars in indie film Charlie and recently wrapped the Michelle Yeoh actioner Silver Hawk. He next appears in the TNT miniseries Frankenstein as the title character. Goss is repped by Tom Chasin and DW Management's David Wood and Shirley Lewis.

HONG KONG -- Michelle Yeoh is donning her actress-producer hat again for a stint as a female Robin Hood with a new film, The Masked Crusader, to be directed by cinematographer-turned-director Jingle Ma. The $10 million film will be produced by Yeoh and partner Thomas Chung under the auspices of her company, Mythical Films, which is associated with Chung's Han Entertainment. Principal photography is expected to start in January in Hong Kong, China and Japan. Masked Crusader is based on the legendary Wong Ngung, who fought for justice for the underdog and was a popular subject of black-and-white films of the 1960s, with many of the top actresses of the time portraying her. This version, set in the year 2009, will be the first time a modern-day film has been made about her.
