Sociologists refer to subcultures as groups that reflect values, tendencies, interests, and activities that fall outside of the norm. We are likely familiar with subcultures as they have been profiled in notable feature films, on television shows, and in advertising and marketing campaigns.
One of the most important ways in which subcultures have been introduced to us is through documentary film. Documentary filmmakers use the evocative and personal medium of film to express some of the insights that would otherwise be lost if we were to merely read about subcultures.
Here, then, are 10 outstanding documentaries about subcultures.
10. Trekkies and Trekkies 2
Roger Nygard’s Trekkies (1997) and Trekkies 2 (2004) offer a unique look at Star Trek fandom. His first film focuses mainly on the U.S. Trek scene, while Trekkies 2 illustrates the many instances of Trek fandom from around the world. Nygard’s interviews with Trek fans show us the...

With Comic-Con just two days away, the imminent pandering to fans has already begun. Morgan Spurlock's documentary Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope just hit DVD and Blu-ray this week, and now it appears that we have yet another fan-oriented documentary that will be premiering at the Con: William Shatner's Get a Life. The movie finds Shatner trying to get to the bottom of what makes Trekkers tick. But wait a minute, hasn't this subject already been explored like a billion times before? Why yes... yes it has. Watching the teaser trailer for Get a Life, it's hard to see anything new that Shatner might be able to add to the conversation. In addition to Trekkies and Trekkies 2, there is Rod Roddenbery's Trek Nation, which is also holding a special screening at Comic-Con this week. If Shatner's last documentary The Captains is any indication of what to expect,...

The Pillars Of The Earth. Dave's One Night Stand. Mark Gatiss. Buzzcocks. Sanctuary. The Inbetweeners. Movies. It's a busy week of British telly ahead...
For the second week running, there's a lot to get through over the next seven days of UK telly, so we'll be short and, hopefully, sweet in helping you set your reminders early.
8 Out Of 10 Cats bids farewell to Tellyville tonight, Friday, October 15th at 10:00pm on Channel 4. The show, hosted by Jimmy Carr with team captains Sean Lock and Jason Manford, will, no doubt, get the groans going amid the giggles, with this week's guest comedians Rufus Hound and Russell Kane seeing the current series out.
The Pillars Of The Earth debuts on Saturday, October 16th at 9:00pm on Channel 4. The mini-series, set in 12th century England, stars Donald Sutherland, Ian McShane, Rufus Sewell and Hayley Atwell and looks like a...

I love weird and wacky documentaries. I must have seen Trekkies and Trekkies 2 a hundred times each (I've spoken to Denise Crosby and they're going to try and make a Trekkies 3. I'm working on getting an interview with her.) and I loved King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (despite its timeline inaccuracy). Anything that's weird or talks about a sub-culture of America I've never seen or heard about before fascinates me. I recently watched the documentary Racing Dreams at ShoWest about three teenagers all trying to be Go-Kart champions and it was awesome. Now a new documentary has surfaced about the highly competitive world of rabbit shows. What? Written, produced and directed by Amy Do, the documentary looks like another strange, weird and funny look into that small slice of Americana you don't see everyday.Rabbit Fever is a coming-of-age story that follows six competitors as they strive...

Remaking a universe is tricky. There's a risk of destroying the whole thing in the process.
On May 8, Paramount will set out for a new and, it hopes, not final frontier when it relaunches the iconic sci-fi franchise "Star Trek." After 43 years, 10 movies and more than 700 episodes of six TV series, the Melrose studio has bet at least $150 million (and tens of millions more in planned marketing) that Trekkies of all federations again will climb aboard the Starship Enterprise.
But reaching blockbuster status is a challenge only slightly less daunting than the Kobayashi Maru scenario.
The films based on Gene Roddenberry's 1966 space Western serial have not been mega-hits, and, more importantly, they have failed to draw big audiences in increasingly crucial overseas markets. The top-grossing "Trek" feature was 1996's "Star Trek: First Contact," which grossed $146 million worldwide, with only $54 million coming from international (1979's "Star Trek: The Motion Picture...

Joan Winston, one of the founders of the very first Star Trek convention, passed away this week.
Mark Milton, a relative of Winston’s, posted on a Doctor Who mailing list overnight, “I came home today to learn that Joan Winston, co-founder of the Star Trek conventions, author of Star Trek Lives! and The Making of the Trek Conventions as well as many other books and short stories, had passed away. As some of you know, she's my father-in-law's first cousin and I enjoyed her greatly. She was quite a gal. Details of how/why are still sketchy but services are Sunday at 9:30 at (as best as I can tell) the Plaza funeral home in Manhattan. I don't know if that is what it's actually called, we're contacting the rabbi tomorrow.”
Winston was part of what became known as The Committee, the fans who figured out how to run...
