Thrilling Spy
This is another entry in the Data East roster, I wouldn't say it's a favorite in my book but it's still a fun game all the same. The game is obviously inspired by the James Bond movie franchise and it's also probably the closest we've ever had to a James Bond video game in the arcades as the movie franchise never had one.
Nothing much to the plot as it's the typical save the world from this evil Spectre like organization, that's the plot in a nutshell which I'm fine with like any game in the arcade were all in it for the action and this game has plenty of it.
What makes this unique from the usual platform actioner is that each stage and level you go through has something different which gives the game variety, which I like it keeps the game fresh.
You have the typical point A to B action like "Rolling Thunder" as you are constantly gunning down enemies constantly coming at you stupidly always thinking they can take you down quick. There is a decent number of enemies which consist of typical henchmen, some who have different outfits, gear like a few that fly with rockets packs or are bigger and stronger than the other. Which of course means the big ones take more shots to take out, and the others in different uniforms have different ways to take you down like for the big ones it's the "Donkey Kong" or "Abobo" method of throwing oil drums at you.
There are some items though not a lot of weapons like one to feed your ammo supply, another strengthens your fire power. However, the best is finding the different parts to assemble "The Golden Gun" (obvious homage and reference to the "James Bond" film). The Golden Gun is just awesome as you are just unstoppable with it, anything to everything you shoot effortless is destroyed. But of course, like all good things this doesn't last as your armed with it for a brief amount of time so don't be afraid to shoot the hell out of it.
Then you have the different kind of stages which are a lot of fun as their something different. From riding on a motorcycle and gunning down opposition while dodging bullets. The beginning which is a bit like a shump as you are skydiving you are shooting at all the other enemies sky diving toward you. Another is your underwater which is also a bit of a shump as you are harpooning enemies, sharks, and submarines. I like the music in this game too, I wouldn't say it's anything memorable but still a good listen as the tracks help give the feel of fast espionage action.
The game is also on the easy side as least for me anyway, as each of the scenario aren't really that hard to get though and the game goes by at a fast pace, though that could just be me.
Overall, it's a fun breezy play, if you feel like play a light action game or even are a fan of the James Bond film franchise this vintage game is worth spying into.
Rating: 3 stars.
