Let's remember this is a KIDS movie
jkoreniuk8 June 2008
If you're an adult watching this, you're going to hate it. Especially if you're a fan of the books. Seems to me, that's what the other reviewers were.

However, my 3-year old son, who happens to be a dinosaur fanatic, LOVES this movie. He's too young to be able to watch the mini-series or read the books. However, this was a great way to get him introduced to the Dinotopia world at his early age. No violence, no risqué dialogue, just wholesome child-friendly dinosaur fun. Why look for inconsistencies in a kid's movie? So it's not like the books - most kid's movies aren't.

My son has every word of this movie memorized - subsequently, so do I. If you have young children, especially those that like dinosaurs, this movie is perfect.

Not as bad as some say, but it still suffers from a ton of problems that makes this an unworthy adaptation

Warning: Spoilers
If you don't want to read the whole review, skip to the tl;dr section near the bottom.

As a little kid when I was 5-10, I absolutely remember loving this movie and thinking it was one heck of a film, mainly because of those strutters, dinosaurs and animation. However, this is before I found out that it was part of a franchise containing a miniseries a tv series and four books (not to mention the countless tie in novels). I recently rewatched this along with watching the miniseries for the first time as well as read the books, and I have discovered a lot of problems with this adaptation. Before I talk about the problems, I will talk about some of the good stuff, don't worry it won't be long. First of all, the animation is actually pretty good for a home video release and is they actually integrate in to the backgrounds properly. The introduction in this adaptation at least some what resembles the original book introduction with a ship wreck with Kex ending up on the island after a storm sent his lifeboat on the island of dinotopia, kind of like Arthur Dennison and will in the original book. The Strutters actually look the way they are depicted in the book and I can overlook the digital screens on them that were added on them. The voice acting is okay for the most part (with the exception of Spazz, more on him later), Waterfall city looks how it does in the book as do the skybak riders, I think the sun stones trapping radio waves was a good way to fill in a plot hole in a modern setting, John, 26, Mara, and Kex are pretty decent characters (though Kex can be a bit whiny and annoying sometimes), the after credits music is very calm and relaxing, the backgrounds are pretty good, and the ruby sunstone sarcophagus scene was extremely cool. However, that's where the positive things about this adaptation end. Now I'm going to talk about the main problems of this adaptation. For starters, they made the mistake of taking characters like Ogthar and Stinktooth, but they do not look or have the same origins at all as they do in the original book series. And some hardcore fans might take issue with digital screens being added to the strutters amongst other things. Also, the majority of dinosaurs in this adaptation have been given the ability to talk WHEN it is convenient to the plot. I might have given this a past if it was just a select few dinosaurs, but nope, the majority of the main dinosaurs in the movie can talk. Not only that, but there is no consistency to when this occurs. Like Spazz can talk like everyone else despite just hatching halfway through the movie, while other baby dinosaurs can't talk at all. And the same goes for the adult dinosaurs as well. If you're going to make every dinosaur talk, at least go all the way with it. Third, the film seemingly can't decide whether Kex or 26 is the main character in this movie. At the start of the movie, you're lead to believe it is Kex. However, when John leaves 26 in charge, she is put with a lot of responsibility being in charge of finding the eggs and looking after the hatchery. Plus, 26 is right on the cover whereas Kex is way in the background on the DVD's cover. Now, I think what they should have done here is have 26 start out the film doing her duties and then finding Kex washed ashore in the distance. I don't think it would have solved all of the problems but it would have been something at least. I also think they didn't explore enough of the island and made this too short. If you added a couple more scenes having Kex exploring the island in the quest, then that would have been a much better way of showing the island instead of telling. Another problem with this adaptation is Rhoga and Thudd, they just feel too forcibly evil and I know they don't like their poop patrol job and it is understandable, but they feel so annoying and unlikable, and sometimes feel evil for the sake of being evil. And despite the title, this barely feels anything like a dinotopia movie because of all of these changes. Kex, while an okay protagonist, we don't know much about him besides that he's an orphan, likes to skateboard, and wants to see the world. I think they should have given him flashbacks to when he was still at the orphanage and have him be responsible for looking after the hatchery and find the eggs if they wanted to make Kex the protagonist. Also for some reason they thought iguanadons shed skin like iguanas do, which is not true at all. The strutters while I can overlook them adding digital technology, I can not overlook how they made the strutters stop working after spazz's trex head got chopped off, even though in the books they can still work even after losing a head. Also, the toilet humour is very lazy and unoriginal in this movie, they just do the joke and don't twist it into anything clever. And BY FAR THE WORST PART OF THIS ADAPTATION IS SPAZZ. Annoying, no fruit flies are annoying, this creature is a glimpse into h3//. Every time he is on screen and says something you just want him to shut up and choke him to death, nothing he does is whitty or charming or funny, it is just him pretending to be funny and annoying all of the main characters, he is easily the worst character by far not only in this film but out of any dinotopia adaptation or books, he's worst then so called stinktooth and so called ogthar and that is saying a lot. Finally, the ending felt intense but it felt like they were trying to copy the return of the king ending, I wished "stinktooth" just ate "ogthar" as it would have ended it a lot sooner. And the ending of Kex choosing an egg for himself feels wrong as he barely did anything helpful compared to 26. Then the movie ends and we see what happens in the credits. I think if I was to make this, I would have made Kex the hero where he is the one who throws the stone into the volcano. Also, I would have made ogthar a grandson of Lee crab or have lee crab be the one stuck in a sarcophagus, as that would have made a little more sense, as well as add more scenes introducing the world of dinotopia like Waterfall city and revealing more information about Kex. Additionally, I would have just taken out of spazz, and all of these unfunny scenes. Moreover, I would have added flashbacks of Kex in the orphanage to add some more depth to his character. If this was something on its own and not connected to dinotopia, some of the problems could have had a chance of being solved like the consistency of the lord of Dinotopia, but the characters are still pretty badly written and underdeveloped, spazz is an unlikeable and annoying character, the hero is jumbled around and the pacing is uneven.

TL;DR. Ultimately, Dinotopia quest for the ruby sunstone lacks consistency with dinotopia as a whole, contains too many unfunny jokes, has very underdeveloped, and it feels like the makers of this film had merely looked at the pictures of the books, slapped some modernness on it, watched the miniseries in the background while working on something else, and made up facts about the world of dinotopia. Even if this was on its own, I probably would still have issues with it because of the jumbled up writing amongst other things. Even the miniseries is better because it at least tried to be a continuation of the books (granted they failed but at least they made an attempt as they felt like they actually read the books). True, it does feature some elements from the original book series, the animation is good for a home video release, and it does have okay characters, and it is not the worst thing ever (I've seen way worse movies) but it is advisable to skip this movie unless you have a child under 8. Hallmark, you messed up with this film.

Not as bad as I'd heard, but felt rather bland to me
TheLittleSongbird15 August 2012
Having never read the book(s) and having not seen enough of the show to judge, I saw Dinotopia: Quest for the Ruby Sunstone aiming to judge it on its own merits and with no expectations. After seeing it I don't think it is as bad as I'd heard it was, I have seen far worse animated movies out there though at the same time I've seen better also. However, it also seemed on the bland side. The good points are the animation, which is mostly bright and fluid, a whimsical and sometimes haunting background score, cute characters(with the exception of Spaz who I found irritating) as well as some suitably antagonistic villains, some good non-preachy messaging and some good voice acting from Alyssa Milano, Kathy Griffin, Carol Burnett and Malcolm McDowell. However Dinotipia: Quest for the Ruby Sunstone's flaws are mainly to do with the script and the story. The script is very simplistic, while the story is structurally thin and also rather predictable. The film is also too short and there are some bizarrely placed and forgettable musical numbers. Overall, not bad but rather bland for my liking. 6/10 Bethany Cox

"We want to be moronic gods!"
draketigerclaw4 August 2008
I'm going to be brutally honest about this movie. It's mislabeled. I'll explain that in a moment. Suffice it to say that if you are older than 10 this movie will either cause you an emotion of rage or bore you to tears.

Generally when you make a children's movie out of a popular series the intent is usually to bring young people into a fantasy world in a safe environment. Apparently they missed that idea because it doesn't bring you into anything. It makes a lot of references to the TV mini series and they traced a few of the backgrounds out of the original book but mostly they ignore all of the important plot devices from the series and replace them with Saturday morning cartoon plot devices. It may as well have been called "Kids in Dinoland", because the ideas surrounding Dinotopia are just not there, which is why it is mislabeled.

Moving on to the technical side of the movie, it is not terrible but it is by no means great. The character animation is surprisingly smooth for a goofy straight to video movie. The backgrounds look alright most of the time, and the animation is mostly consistent. It mostly looks like a Saturday morning cartoon though.

The story is baked terrible with a side of fried stupid. It's chock full of clichés and stupid jokes from 90's pop culture. There are really vague references and allusions to plot points from the mini series and books but they never go into any of them. Dinotopian culture is not explained at all, which would be alright if it were not about someone being introduced to Dinotopian culture.

Now for some nit picking. The characters are mostly forgettable and bland, except for the bad guys and 26. There were even a few attempts at musical numbers that were bizarre. The sun stones and what they supposedly do made even less sense than they did in the mini-series. I seriously thought we had gotten over idiotic skateboarding in the 90's. Oh yeah and the ending leads me to believe they made this as a pilot for another TV series that just didn't happen.

To wrap up, as a fan of animation, movies, sci-fi, and other nonsense I refuse to call something that is bad good. People use the fact that this is a children's movie to defend it's problems, but as it is based on a series I give it no quarter because when it's based on a series for everybody it should not exclude the majority of it's fans or people who may be interested. So while I'm not prepared to call it horrible because it is by no means the worst thing I have ever seen, it just isn't good. If you are a fan or passerby who may be interested (like me) this movie is not worth your time. If you need to distract a 5 year old for an hour than this may be for you.

Don't waste your time
QueenPendragon5 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
If you have little kids, it might occupy them for a while.

But if you've spent any time at all with the books, you're going to just get more and more annoyed with the inaccuracies and mistakes as the movie goes on.

-Ogthar, the villain, was an ancient mythical half human, half saurian king of the sunken island of Poseidos in The World Beneath but is used as a human villain here, a cross between Roff Striker from First Flight and Lee Crabb from the original book.

-using dinosaurs as Ogthar's cronies was just wrong, some humans, like Crabb, aren't as happy on the island, but it's not likely at all you'd see saurians like that.

They've got quadrapeds walking on hindlegs, which you KNOW is wrong -the hatcheries are way off but that's only the Miniseries' fault -the Skybax was pretty accurate but they're annoying having a scene with the hatchery girl's dad riding one, the books state that "None but the rider dares approach it" *ends rant* I just can't help the annoyance being such a big Dintopia fan. I just wish someone would make a film that's keeping with the books and quit changing so much.

If you have kids, and can't find anything else
RWlkrSmith11 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Meh.

For the record, I loved loved LOVED the original book, and even read and enjoyed the sequel (World Below, IIRC).

This was. . . well, it was only 76 minutes. That's the best thing I can say about it.

Rough summary (spoilers ahoy!). Protagoniat Kex runs away from an orphanage (?!) in what appears to be present-day Seattle, or possible San Francisco, stows away on a ship's lifeboat, which conveniently falls overboard in a storm. Shipwrecks or boatwrecks on a tropic island shore, and is promptly confronted by a small dinosaur speaking flawless, colloquial American English. It doesn't get better from there.

Almost everything that made the original Dinotopia wonderful IMHO was carefully excised to make this 'kid-friendly', and a lot of kludge was carefully wadded in. The brief scenes in Waterfall City were a painful glimpse of the movie this could have been had they given a good g*dd**n.

In closing, this could have been the lowest point in Malcom McDowell's career - but there's still GigaShadow.

Great for young kids
dan_hyman9 November 2011
This is a movie for KIDS. I have a two-year old, and he LOVES this film; he chooses it for about 25% of his total viewing options. He has learned a lot about different types of dinosaurs across books and videos, and we talk about different dinosaurs and flying reptiles through the movie as we watch it. Have wikipedia handy, because there isn't anything scientific in the fare.

We skip the scary part in the cave (he doesn't like the mean dino-cronies unless they're getting bested by the protagonists).

I don't know a thing about the Dinotopia books, or mini-series, or anything. It's clear there are references to other things all throughout the movie, but it's not disruptive to young children. Based on other reviews, I'm sure it butchers that material into nice clean young-child-friendly pork chops.

Clearly appears to be a reach for the toy market, due to the strutters (they look great, would love to know if they were ever prototyped). Lots of potential for multiple releases and sat-morn fare, but never expanded; too bad.

Overall: Good animation, very fluid, good expressions, not jumpy like modern kid cartoons designed for the ADHD crowd. Classic styling with computer-generated backgrounds that are nicely handled.

Voice acting pretty good, unfortunately the script and story is scatterbrained and simplistic. NOT for a ten year old, and DEFINITELY not for a 35 year old Dinotopia hardcore. It's for younger children to enjoy a romp through a fantasy land where dinosaurs have feelings too.

Good for hand exercises!
ArturRinne5 July 2018
This movie was so bad that me and my friend spent at least half a hour destroying the disc. Why, you ask? Because it was boring and stupid. It wasn't even funny. I mean so bad it's funny. 2/10 got to destroy the disc and it was fun. Movie's bad!

This Was Really Fun
zsofikam23 December 2016
Warning: Spoilers
I first saw Dinotopia when it first came out and received the DVD as a gift from my grandfather. Thus, I fully admit to reviewing this through my nostalgia goggles. There's actually allot to like about it. The animation, while not Disney or Bluth quality, is both crisp and soft. Plus, both the plot and characters are really engaging. Basically, it features a slightly older version of 26, the hatchling from the miniseries, who has to find the reason why all the sunstones (an energy source) are going out. The characters are enjoyable, although I would have preferred if Ogthar had stayed in his armour as it would make him appear more menacing. Also, I personally found Spaz, a dinosaur that 26 travels with, to be funny (although I admit that the part where he's sucking on 26's nose is gross). Plus, unlike many animated movies there aren't any songs (okay, technically there's one that seems to come out of nowhere but thankfully it only lasts for about 15 seconds). In terms of critique, some of the modern references/dialogue got a bit distracting. I don't have a problem with this within the context of the outside world, but since Dinotopia is supposed to be isolated I don't think that they would have any slang or at least no recognizable slang. But for the most part I enjoy it. I would like there to be a sequel but I can dream.
