Broke the Wednesday opening day record previously held by Spider-Man 2 (2004) with a 44.2 million dollar domestic gross. másGoofs:
Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Mad-Eye Moody tells Kingsley to take point as they escort Harry to headquarters, but throughout the flight Moody is in the lead. During the flight over the Thames River -- just before the ferryboat -- Kingsley can be seen to Harry's left. Moody should have told Kingsley to guard their flank. másQuotes:
[first lines]Radio announcer: I don't know about you, it's just too hot today, isn't it? And it's going to get even worse. Temperatures up in the mid 30's Celsius, that's the mid 90's Fahrenheit, tomorrow maybe even hitting 100. So please, remember to cover up and stay cool with the hottest hits on your FM dial.

"Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" is by far my favorite movie of 2007, and quite possibly my favorite Harry Potter movie yet! The film marvelously captured the dark, foreboding mood of J.K. Rowling's novel.
There are scenes here that stuck with me long after I left the theater, some of which are as follows: 1) The beginning when we see Harry sitting motionless in a swing in the park, gazing longingly at a mother gathering her child off the merry-go-round. 2) Harry's conversation with Luna Lovegood among the thestrals in the forest. 3) Professor Umbridge storming the halls of Hogwarts, smiling away and waving her wand at misbehaving students. 4) The training of Dumbledore's Army in the Room of Requirement. 5) Harry and his friends searching through the Hall of Prophecy within the Ministry of Magic. There's such depth to these scenes--you have to see the movie more than once to really absorb the magic!
The performances from the cast are spectacular! Daniel Radcliffe gives his best performance as Harry by adding further depth, anger, and vulnerability to the character; he really is the perfect Potter. Rupert Grint and Emma Watson are once again delightful as Ron and Hermione. Imelda Staunton is terrific as Dolores Umbridge; she gives the role spice and makes us actually want to hate her! (I wouldn't be surprised if she got an Oscar nomination for this role!) As for the rest of the cast, I was very impressed with Evanna Lynch's other-worldly performance as Luna Lovegood; she makes the part believable, and shows that being different is not necessarily a bad thing at all! Helena Bonham Carter is deliciously creepy as Bellatrix Lestrange. Alan Rickman proves yet again that he IS Severus Snape! And as usual, we get to see the familiar faces of Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith, Michael Gambon, Gary Oldman, David Thewlis, Emma Thompson, Ralph Fiennes, Brendan Gleeson, Richard Griffiths, Fiona Shaw, Mark Williams, Julie Walters, Jason Isaacs, and several other British actors.
My favorite scenes are those between Harry and Sirius; they are the most touching, and I think they give the film its sense of heart.
David Yates has done well as the director of this film; he stays true to the spirit of the book while making it his own. I hope he does even better with "Half-Blood Prince." The production design by Stuart Craig is amazing, and the flowing cinematography by Slawomir Idziak sets the dark tone of the story. Also, composer Nicholas Hooper provides an effective and thrilling score.
If I failed to mention the other important contributions to the film, it's because I'm already cast under this movie's spell and it's difficult for me to think of everything that went into the making of this one-of-a-kind film! Overall, "Order of the Phoenix" is a wonderful, epic adventure that's very faithful to its source material, and fits nicely into the Potter film series. My rating: ***1/2 out of ****
