Cate Blanchett will preside over the main competition jury at the Venice Film Festival in September, marking the third woman in four years to hold that role at the fest which in recent years has come under fire for scarce representation of female filmmakers.
Last year’s Venice jury president was Lucrecia Martel, while Annette Bening presided over the Venice jury in 2017.
Festival director Alberto Barbera commented: “Cate Blanchett is not just an icon of contemporary cinema, courted by the greatest directors of the past 20 years and adored by moviegoers of every kind. Her commitment in the artistic and humanitarian fields and to the protection of the environment, as well as her defense of the emancipation of women in a film industry still coming to terms with male prejudice, have made her an inspiration for society as a whole. Mitzi Ruhlmann.
Mitzi Ruhlmann was five years old when she saw Phillip Noyce’s Stolen Generation drama Rabbit-Proof Fence, perhaps not an ideal experience for someone so young, but it had a profound impact.
From that moment on she was determined to become an actor, not a far-fetched ambition for a girl who spent a lot of time on film and TV sets watching her dad, cinematographer Danny Ruhlmann, at work.
(Ruhlmann Senior’s credits include the features The Nugget, The Night We Called It a Day and Little Fish and, most recently, the Netflix series Messiah, created by Aussie Michael Petroni and co-directed by Kate Woods, and Jupiter’s Legacy.)
Last month the 21-year-old came home after seven months in La auditioning for numerous roles. She’ll go back in February for pilot season.

Watching the 2015 Melbourne Cup, Rachel Griffiths didn’t initially know there was a female jockey in the race.
When the commentator first mentioned Michelle Payne’s name, her ears pricked up. When Payne then crossed the line – the first female jockey to ever win the Cup – the room full of women she was in erupted in cheers.
Griffiths continued to be captivated as Michelle’s brother and strapper Stevie Payne ran out to put the sash on horse Prince of Penzance, and the jockey told her naysayers to “get stuffed” in her first interview after dismounting.
She jumped on Google straight away to find out more about her, and within minutes she knew Michelle was the youngest of 10 children, eight of whom were jockeys. Her mother had died when she was six months old – “which officially makes her a Disney princess, because she has an unexpected...

Screen Nsw's new-look script development program, Amplifier, replaces the agency's biennial Aurora workshop, which nurtured the likes of Somersault, Little Fish, Cut Snake and Animal Kingdom.
Amplifier will also take place every two years, but will place greater emphasis on the market, according to Screen Nsw CEO Courtney Gibson.
"One of the key differences will be the opportunity to work directly with exhibitors and distributors as part of the development process," Gibson said..
"We want to deliver as many films as possible into cinemas. And that means having critical engagement with distribution and exhibition during the screenwriting process, rather than at the back end."
In addition, the initial in-person workshop with mentors will no longer be quite so central to the process.

"The Red Road," the second wholly owned original drama from SundanceTV (formerly Sundance Channel), has a pretty excellent pedigree. Created by "Prisoners" screenwriter Aaron Guzikowski, who co-wrote the series with Bridget Carpenter ("Friday Night Lights"), the series stars Jason Momoa ("Game of Thrones"), Martin Henderson ("Little Fish") and Julianne Nicholson ("Masters of Sex") as residents of a small New Jersey town divided along lines of class and race and shaken up by a tragedy that binds the three characters together. "The Immigrant" filmmaker James Gray directed the series premiere in his first television venture. "The Red Road" premieres this week on February 27 at 9pm and will run for six hour-long episodes, but SundanceTV has put the series premiere -- entitled "Arise My Love, Shake Off This Dream" -- online in its entirety. It's not embeddable, but you can stream it for free on Sundance.TV ahead of its on-air debut.

Banshee, Season 2: Episode 1 – “Little Fish”
Written by Jonathan Tropper
Directed by Greg Yaitanes
Airs Friday nights at 10 on Cinemax
“You’ve taken this sheriff thing about as far as it should have gone. Sooner or later, someone’s going to figure out who you are. Or at least who you are not.”
“The thing is…he’s all I had. I leave here…I don’t know, I feel like I’ll disappear or something.”
The “he” that our main character had is Lucas Hood, a dead sheriff whose identity has been taken by the ex-con/conman anti-hero of Banshee. Lucas Hood joins several other recent television leads who go by names that don’t belong to them – the Jennings couple on The Americans and Spartacus from the Starz series of the same name. It’s an easy way to inject an identity crisis aspect to a narrative, but...

Today we are talking to a terrifically talented and versatile stage and screen performer who has excelled in many arenas throughout her compellingly varied career - comedy, drama, stand-up, cabaret, jazz and beyond - the fiercely, fabulously idiosyncratic and ebulliently engaging Lea DeLaria. Espousing upon a wide range of topics and tracing her unique professional trajectory thus far, DeLaria sheds some light on a few of her most fondly remembered stage roles - revivals of The Rocky Horror Show and On The Town on Broadway, as well as Off-Broadway turns in Little Fish and Prometheus Bound included - as well as recounts her experiences participating in a handful of feature films, new and old, as well - including the recent Hallmark original movie musical Dear Dumb Diary. Most importantly, DeLaria recounts her experiences starring on the Netflix mega-hit series Orange Is The New Black and offers a glimpse of the...

"Six Feet Under" and "Brothers and Sisters" actress Rachel Griffiths is set to play ousted Australian Prime Minister prime minister in "Little Fish" director Richard Keddie's telemovie "Stalking Julia" for Wtfn. No broadcaster is yet attached.
Gillard became the first female Deputy Prime Minister of Australia in 2007, serving under newly elected Prime Minister Kevin Rudd - the pair leading the left-wing Labor Party to successfully kick out the conservative Liberal/National coalition after more than a decade in power.
In 2010, Rudd lost the support of the Labor Government and resigned, which led to Gillard becoming the first female Pm in Australia. Gillard won a tight election that year by forming a minority government with minor parties.
Thus began one of the most contentious three years in Australian political history both in the parliament and across the media as Gillard came under constant and brutal criticism from all corners, including from within her own party.

Sydney -- Rachel Griffiths is attached to star in the feature-length TV drama Stalking Julia, being developed by Hawke and Little Fish director Richard Keddie and production company Wtfn. From the story of a teenage daughter of a parent undergoing gender transitioning to North Korea's first rom-com, our pick of the Adelaide film festival
It has been more than two and a half years since the last Adelaide film festival, a long stretch even for a city nurtured on (and thankfully leaving behind) the notion of only hosting major arts events biennially. But anguished cinema junkies can rejoice, with a fresh-look festival bringing joy to October away from the city's crowded "Mad March" calendar. If you're a little rusty and intimidated at the sight of the full package of features, shorts, seminars and parties, then here are 10 filmic delights not to miss.
52 Tuesdays
There is sizzling anticipation for this local production and it will be one of the most prized tickets of the festival. Shot once a week over a year, Sophie Hyde's drama charts the relationship between...

And now Glenn's report from the New York Film Festival's tribute to Cate Blanchett.
When the powers that be at the Film Society of Lincoln Center (my limited knowledge suggests they’re the organisation that runs the New York Film Festival) announced one of the recipients of this year’s special tributes would be Cate Blanchett it was probably hard to find anybody who’d argue against it. Granted, she had no films screening at the fest, but you just try and find anybody who doesn’t think her work in this summer’s Blue Jasmine was a career-topping and undeniably Oscar-bound achievement. A genuine “moment” for the acting craft that Blanchett herself would later acknowledge was like a magical culmination of her years in the profession and her favorite role yet.
After a pair of introductions the assembled audience watched a collection of long film clips to whet the appetite.

"Little Fish" featured the Vegas girls leaving town and the cowboys on the losing end…or so it seemed.
Apparently Frank Blackwell likes his hookers young, which turned out to be a problem for the Savoy. As I watched, I contemplated how things have changed. Would 17 still be legally considered a minor in most states if this case happened today?
I know Ralph wanted to help the girl but he was sure quick to turn on Catherine when she had to let Patricia go. There's bending the rules and then there's not following the law at all. Catherine had no legal right to hold Patricia, although perhaps someone should have asked the mom to show some ID. Not that it wouldn't have been easy enough to fake one in 1960.
Mia has turned out to be one of the strongest characters one the show. She gave Patricia a new life in...

The film has been compared to the works of the Coen Brothers (No Country for Old Men and Blood Simple), Hitchcock and Polanski. Crawl, the debut feature film of the two brothers, showcases the work of rising talented filmmakers, unafraid to leap beyond the normal and expected to give audiences a deep, emotional, and horrific escape.
