The offbeat 2012 comedy film Jesus Henry Christ was written and directed by Dennis Lee and executive produced by Julia Roberts.
The film revolves around 10-year-old boy genius Henry James Herman (Jason Spevak, Sunshine Cleaning) and his fervently left-wing single mother Patricia (Toni Collette, Velvet Goldmine), who works at the local university’s cafeteria. Well, people, it’s here. Each year, starting around Memorial Day and continuing through the early weeks of summer, we find ourselves knee-deep in a period marked by the release of monstrously large popcorn flicks, movies that show off stars and special effects while raking in the dough. That’s right: it’s the season of the terminal illness drama-comedy. Oh, wait – just kidding. It’s Summer Blockbuster Season! And we’re off to a great start with Marvel’s superhero team up this weekend. Buckle up.
Let’s just get right to it. “The Avengers,” from writer-director Joss Whedon, unites almost every superhero under the Marvel banner in a fight against time and evil, in this weekend’s biggest movie (by far). Whedon, only several weeks out of receiving critical acclaim for his penning of “The Cabin in the Woods,” has created another masterpiece here. Witty, technically brilliant, plausible (grain of salt,...

There's a moment in "Jesus Henry Christ" when a character is said to be in poor health. When asked what happened to him, the answer is "The Bulls won the championship." We flash back to 1998, where a lisping ethnic caricature sits on a couch; his shoulders slumped, defeated as the television blares news of the Bulls' championship triumph. The joke, we're meant to assume, is that there were serious repercussions to Chicago winning that championship, though we never exactly see what happens to our doomed, ultimately irrelevant character. Later, we learn in another cutaway occurring a half hour later for no apparent reason, that the man left the house to take out the garbage, only to absorb a bullet to the head, ostensibly fired in the air by an overzealous Bulls fan. So the joke...yeah.

Most of us are suckers for a good child prodigy story. Be it Bobby Fischer, Akeelah Anderson, Salinger’s Glass family or Anderson’s Tenenbaums, we gawk at the seemingly miraculous abilities, identify with the weird families, weep at the ostracism and cheer at the victories. All of these factors are in play in Dennis Lee’s Jesus Henry Christ, the story of a remarkable boy named Henry and his quest to find his biological father....

I'll admit it: I'm kind of a sucker for quirky indie comedies, the more twee the better. I fully recognize why some people don't like them and I honestly can't blame them - I have moments of self reflection about it myself - but lord help me, I can't get enough of a precocious young child who wants his mom to help track down their biological father. And that's exactly what I get in Jesus Henry Christ. Based on a short that director Dennis Lee made back in 2003, the feature film stars Toni Collette, Michael Sheen, and introduces Jason Spevack and Samantha Weinstein. Check out the trailer below and to see it in HD hop over to Apple. Does it look kind of corny? Sure. Has the young genius trope been done to death yet? Quite possibly. But still, I couldn't help myself from smiling while watching that preview. Add...

"I'm his mother, you're nothing but a test tube filled with sperm!" E1 Entertainment has debuted the official trailer on Apple for the indie comedy Jesus Henry Christ, written and directed by Dennis Lee (Fireflies in the Garden), starring Toni Collette and Jason Spevack as her son Henry James Herman, a precocious 10-year-old kid who sets out on a quest to find out who his sperm-donor father was. The trailer reveals that it's Michael Sheen, who actually has some sort of history with Collette's character anyway, and all the fun begins. There are some interesting fantastical elements to this with the Post-It notes, but it looks charming. After premiering the first eight minutes of his live-action feature theatrical debut at SXSW festival this past weekend, we’ve got the first poster for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane‘s Ted. Coming from Collider, we can see the back of Mark Wahlberg, along with his teddy bear, who comes to life after a wish. The film is said to be heavily R-rated, featuring the foul bear played by MacFarlane through motion-capture. Mila Kunis, Joel McHale, Patrick Warburton, and Giovanni Ribisi make up the rest of the cast for the film arriving on July 13th.
Unless Ted is one of the least funny comedies of the year, then we’ve also got a poster for a film that is much, much worse. We endured Jesus Henry Christ during Tribeca Film Festival last year (review here) and now it is being unfortunately unleashed into cinemas. Writer and director Dennis Lee‘s...

Good news, horrible news on the distribution front.
First up, Variety had learned that Side By Side, a fantastic-looking documentary from Keanu Reeves and director Christopher Kenneally, has been picked up by Tribeca Films. As the trailer already indicated, Side follows the Matrix star as he digs into “the development of cinema and the impact of digital filmmaking via in-depth interviews with filmmakers such as Danny Boyle, James Cameron, David Fincher, George Lucas, David Lynch, Christopher Nolan, Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, Lars Von Trier, the Wachowskis and more.” That, I’d dare say, is one of the finest collections of filmmaking talent ever compiled for a single project.
We’ll be able to get a look at the film when a theatrical and VOD release hits this coming summer; Reeves and Kenneally will also “bring the pic to college campuses and film schools” around this time next year, presumably in...

While Fireflies In The Garden hasn’t been delayed as long as the recently released Margaret, it’s been more than three years since this now-somewhat-musty drama had its Berlin Film Festival première, enough time for director Dennis Lee to have since completed a second feature, Jesus Henry Christ, which is currently on the festival circuit. In spite of an impressively starry cast, including Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Julia Roberts, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hayden Panettiere, and Ioan Gruffudd, there’s still no real need to rush to see this middling effort about the fights and reconnections experienced by ...

Ok, so let’s start with your short film, Jesus Henry Christ. Is that where you feel your career started rolling?
I would say so. I went to Columbia University for graduate school in film and you had to make two films at the time, one was your thesis and one was your non thesis film and I made a short called Jesus Henry Christ which was a 12 minute comedy and it was my non thesis film. We shot it, we were one of the first HD shoots — cut it on Final Cut Pro, did everything at home, and after it was done I turned it in as my non-thesis film. Then, Columbia killed the thesis requirement. So my non-thesis film became my thesis film, and it did well. It won a Student Academy Award for narrative and it got me meetings with managers,...

Writer and director Dennis Lee had his debut feature, Fireflies in the Garden, premiere at the Berlin Film Festival in February of 2008. Fireflies in the Garden began shooting way back in April of 2007 with a cast that includes Ryan Reynolds, Willem Dafoe, Emily Watson, Carrie-Anne Moss, Ioan Gruffud, Hayden Panettiere and Julia Roberts. The film played the Berlin International Film Festival back in 2008 and has seen an international release to the tune of over $3.3 million. Working from his student Academy award winning short, the feature version of Jesus Henry Christ centres around a young boy named Henry James Herman (Jason Spevack) who remembers everything he learns. Singled out as an exceptional child prodigy and treated like a science experiment by adults wanting to capitalize off of him, including a college professor (Michael Sheen), whose child psychology book has ruined the life of his preteen daughter Audrey (Samantha Weinstein). Toni Collette plays Henry’s mother, a woman who also had to grow up fast due to unfortunate childhood circumstances. Filmmaker Dennis Lee borrows from both the dark and the funny, using death as a recurring motif and examining how sometimes being “extraordinary” isn’t as special as it may seem. I spoke with Lee through an email interview shortly after Tribeca wrapped. Melissa Silvestri: How did you develop the story of Jesus Henry Christ? Dennis Lee...

It has been one week since the 2011 Tribeca Film Festival came to a close and I wanted to share with you one last look at my festival experience. Here is the good, the bad & the ugly of Tribeca 2011.
Highlights
There were a lot of great films and moments at this year’s festival. Here are some of my favorites.
Rabies . My favorite film of the festival. Smart, funny, inventive & surprising. A slasher that removes the killer from the start and toys with genre conventions. The Dungon Master . It won best online short, which was well deserved. My favorite short of the festival and one of the best I.ve seen in a long time. Bravo Rider & Shiloh Strong. Janie Jones . This film is like most road trips in that you may know where it is gong but it is the journey that really counts. Sweet, heartwarming, well made and full of great performances.

There’s a character who appears for only a few scenes in Jesus Henry Christ, but who I’ve thought about since seeing the movie. This small, insignificant aspect has stuck out in my mind, because I feel like he encapsulates so many of the things wrong with this film.
The character is a man who’s white, and yet acts as if he were…well, as if he were a stereotypical black man. He dresses in what could be considered a traditional African dress, speaks how someone who’s never seen a Spike Lee movie would assume a character in a Spike Lee movie speaks, and has an offensive “accent,” if you can call it that. The joke serves more or less no purpose to the overall film, only being present to give a cheap laugh. Not only was this exact routine done on an episode of Family Guy...

The joke serves more or less no purpose to the overall film, only being present to give a cheap laugh. Not only was this exact routine done on an episode of Family Guy...

When Dennis Lee made his first film a few years back called "Fireflies in the Garden," he made one brilliant hiring decision. It wasn't Ryan Reynolds or Willem Dafoe, who both starred in the film, but rather the cinematographer Danny Moder, who had but a few credits as a Dp to his name and also a wife named Julia Roberts, who took a supporting role in the drama. As it stands, the film has never been released in America, the first of Roberts' never to do so - and to be fair, the company with the film's rights went belly up, which had the unintended consequence of making "Jesus Henry Christ" Lee's debut in his home country, though it may very well be seen by just as few people.
While Roberts doesn't actually appear onscreen in "Jesus Henry Christ," it's her production company (Red Om Films) that made it and should be mentioned,...

I suppose that this movie was inevitable. After a decade in which “500 Days of Summer,” “Little Miss Sunshine” and “Juno” made great success out of quirky humor and eccentric characters, we were bound to some day find ourselves face to face with a miserably mediocre attempt to keep the creativity going. “Jesus Henry Christ” tries so hard to be original, cute, funny and unique but just ends up looking foolish and exhausted. Bad jokes, over-extended gimmicks and horribly written supporting characters whirl around your head as you attempt to find some sort of redeeming narrative. Unfortunately, not even the…...

Toni Collette has welcomed a new bundle of joy in her family. People magazine has brought up the report that the leading lady of Showtime's hit series "United States of Tara" announced through her publicist she has given birth to a baby boy, a first son to her and her husband, in Australia last Friday, April 22.
"Toni Collette, her husband David Galafassi and their daughter Sage Galafassi are excited and proud to announce the arrival of their baby boy, Arlo Robert Galafassi," the representative told the magazine. Toni and David themselves said in a statement, "He was born on Good Friday making it the greatest Friday, indeed!"
Toni has been married to her musician husband David since 2003. In January 2008, the 38-year-old gave birth to their first child, Sage. She announced she and David were expecting their second child together back in October of 2010.

It's an Aussie born boy for "United States of Tara" star, Toni Collette.
The Australian native welcomed her second child, a son, with hubby David Galafassi on Friday (Apr. 22). The bouncing baby boy was born in Australia and joins three-year-old big sis, Sage.
A rep for the actress tells People that the family is "excited and proud to announce the arrival of their baby boy. He was born on Good Friday making it the greatest Friday, indeed!"
Understandably, Collette was unable to attend the Saturday premiere of her new movie "Jesus Henry Christ" at the New York City Tribeca Film Festival, though director Dennis Lee says, "She is doing well."
No word yet on a name for the little one, but congrats to the growing family!

First Look Photos At 'Christ' & Michael Sheen/Maria Bello Film 'Beautiful Boy,' Torn Also Scoring 'Everything Must Go' So, what is there about the comedy "Jesus Henry Christ" from director Dennis Lee ("Fireflies in the Garden") to get excited about? Well, for one, it stars Michael Sheen, Toni Collete and Jason Spevack, the young boy best known for roles in "Sunshine Cleaning" and "Ramona and Beezus ." Not a bad cast. And perhaps slightly more interesting to us is the fact that the film is being scored by celebrated composer/guitar-texturalist David Torn (occasionally known as the recording artist Splattercell) and…...

Producer Jasmine McGlade Chazelle arrived at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival for the premiere of “Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench.” It was a heady experience that would lead to a Gotham Award nomination later that year. But when she left Tribeca, she also carried with her the seeds of her next film, “Maria My Love.”
“At the premiere, I ran into a girl from high school I hadn’t seen in over five years, and she told me about her life, how she’d lost her mom and what she’d been going through,” recalls Chazelle, who adds that “Maria” was inspired by her friend’s life.
“It feels like it all got started at Tribeca,” says Chazelle, who will bring “Maria My Love” to the 10th annual Tribeca Film Festival, which runs April 20–May 1 in New York.
She’s not alone in her serendipitous experience.

And the festival beat marches on… nothing on this list immediately jumps out at me… no titles I recognize. These are just the World Narrative and Documentary competition selections, so, there’ll be more announcements made later. I do see representation from South Africa, Egypt and Rwanda. It’s in my backyard, so you know I’ll be covering it!
