Recently in the Argentine outlet Filming in Argentina: The blog of San Telmo Productions, Benjamín Harguindey wrote about the new incentives specifically designed to fund the development of horror/gene films in the South American country
By Benjamín Harguindey
The president of the Argentinian Incaa Film Institute,Lucrecia Cardoso, has recently created a specific kind of funding for horror movie production in Argentina. A call for applications will launch shortly, after which two projects will be selected by the state for financing.
Recent genre pieces include vampire movie "Darkness by Day" (2013), the 3D giallo experience "Necrophobia 3D" (2014) and "The History of Fear" (2014), critically acclaimed at the Berlin Film Festival. Argentina has also co-produced horror movies with Us studios, like the supernatural "Jennifer’s Shadow" (2004, starring Faye Dunaway and Gina Philips) and "And Soon the Darkness" (2010, starring Amber Heard and Karl Urban), a remake of the homonymous Brit '70s thriller.
Variety also reported that local film market Ventana Sur will be conducting a small horror film festival next December by the name of “Blood Window”, in tandem with October's traditional "Rojo Sangre" film festival.

Blood Window, the first Latin American Fantastic Film Market, has been attracting plenty of interest at the fifth edition of Ventana Sur (Dec 3-6) in Buenos Aires.
Dedicated to the genre in all of its diversity, the new section presents 56 films produced between 2011 and 2013, including works-in-progress and projects.
“The idea is to offer a space for Latin American ‘fantastic’ films where distributors, sales agents, directors and festival programmers from the five continents can have access to all the productions in different stages,” said Blood Window coordinator Javier Fernandez.
The so-called ‘fantastic’ cinema is particularly vibrant in Latin America. “In countries like Mexico, Chile, Argentina and Brazil, this genre grew strong thanks to the creation of film schools and specialised festivals such as Morbido in Mexico, Fantaspoa in Brazil and Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre in Argentina,” added Fernandez.
Renowned directors to come up through the movement, according to Fernandez, include Adrian Gracia Bogliano from Argentina who directed Ahi Va...

A film that I have been hearing about for the past year is a Chilean exploitation film called Hidden in the Woods. It made such an impact at its North American Premiere at Fantasia last year that Michael Biehn and his daughter felt that they needed to remake the film for American audiences. Artsploitation Films are releasing Hidden in the Woods as their second horror release this year. We have included the trailer and the full press release below as well as the pre-order link from Amazon.

While actor Jackie Earle Haley assumes the role that made Robert Englund a star in the remake of A Nightmare On Elm Street, the original Freddy has been globetrotting of late. When he’s not hitting the museums and restaurants in Europe with wife Nancy, Englund has been acting in films in Italy (Night Of The Sinner; see item here) and Spain, where he just shot the topical kids-and-violence thriller I Want To Be A Soldier, directed by Rojo Sangre’s Christian Molina. Fango got the scoop and a couple of exclusive behind-the-scenes photos.

Spanish horror legend dies.
Jacinto Molina Álvarez, better known worldwide as Paul Naschy, died at his Madrid home Tuesday morning following a year long battle with cancer. The actor, writer, producer and director publicly played down the extent of his ill health, attributing his appearance in a wheelchair at last October’s Sitges Festival to mere fatigue after a long journey and few people were aware of the gravity of his illness. I last talked to Paul three weeks ago and he spoke as enthusiastically as ever about the numerous projects he had on the go: sound editing on the vampire movie Empusa which he directed, the completion of the script for a wartime horror thriller titled Groton El Grande and his pet project, Mi Perro Aquiles, for which he had secured the services of Christopher Lee in the role of Don Quijote.

Spanish actor Paul Naschy was a leading star in horror films for forty years from the late 1960s. He was best known for his role as the tragic werewolf, Waldemar Daninsky, which he originated in the 1968 film La Marca del Hombre Lobo (Mark of the Wolfman) from his own script. Though the film pitted Daninsky against a pair of vampires, the movie was oddly retitled Frankenstein’s Bloody Terror when it was released in the United States. He went on to play the werewolf in nearly a dozen subsequent films, many that he also co-scripted under his real name, Jacinto Molina.
Naschy was born Jacinto Alvarez Molina in Madrid on September 6, 1934. He began working in films as an extra in the 1961 biblical feature King of Kings. He appeared in small roles in a handful of films in the 1960s before creating the role of the werewolf Daninsky.

Paul Naschy, often referred to as 'the Spanish Lon Chaney' has lost his battle with cancer at the age of 75. Naschy's career began in the 60's when he created the werewolf character Waldemar Daninsky, a character that he played in over 12 films. While Naschy is primarily known for his films from the 60's through the 80's (titles like Dr. Jekyll vs. the Werewolf, Horror Rises From the Tomb and Panic Beats), Naschy never stopped working (writing, directing, producing, acting) right up until his death. In 2004, Naschy wrote and starred in a semi-autobiographical film called Rojo Sangre about an 'older', down on his luck actor. I had the good fortune of meeting Mr. Naschy several years ago,...
