By the end of 2019, Dave Alvin knew something was wrong. He’d spent 11 of the past 12 months on the road, and for the first time in his career, he no longer felt physically capable of keeping up his furious touring pace.
“I started feeling like, ‘I don’t think I can do this anymore,’” Alvin says. The following month, in January 2020, he was hospitalized for nine days with a sepsis infection. By the next month, Alvin was feeling just barely good enough to perform at a benefit tribute show for...

Rod 2.0 has video from this week's L.A. Complex, which has closeted rapper Kaldrick King coming out after an emotional scene with his dying father. "And when I finally found someone that I thought I could love and love me back, it made me hurt them. ... I have wanted to die because I could not be who I wanted to be. Who you wanted me to be. But I couldn't be." "None of these lies I told made me stronger. None of the secrets I kept made me happier. My name is Sean Duggan. Aka Kaldrick King. Aka The King of California. I'm gay."

Safety Not Guaranteed is the title of director Colin Trevorrow's recent film. But it's also, at the core of the movie's plot, a warning in a want ad that seeks determined time travelers.
Satisfaction isn't guaranteed either. Just like the principal characters may or may not journey through the 4th dimension, find a better world or even achieve a sense of belonging with a fellow human being, audiences may not take to this quirky offering's resolution.
It doesn't mean that Safety Not Guaranteed makes for a bad afternoon. It's hard not to warm to its flawed characters and their crackpot dreams. They have all the pitiful attraction of a box full of sick puppies.
And charm — my, how Safety Not Guaranteed just seethes with charm.
What the flick lacks is any conclusion...

Fact: This movie sounds a lot like the Michael Douglas/Evan Rachel Wood father-daughter indie dramedy King Of California.
Fact: I need to leave my house more.
The Father Of Invention is a terrrrrible pun. It follows "Kevin Spacey [as] Robert Axle, an eccentric inventor turned ego maniacal infomercial guru, who loses it all when one of his inventions maims thousands of customers. After eight years in a maximum security prison, Axle is ready to redeem his name and rebuild his billion dollar empire. But first, he must convince his estranged 22-year old daughter... to let him live with her and her quirky, over-protective roommates." [Deadline]

The first trailer for co-writer and director Mike Cahill's (not to be confused with the Mike Cahill that directed King of California) new movie, Another Earth, is now online. Described by Cahill as "part sci-fi, part complex love romance, and 100% poetry meets science," the movie debuted to acclaim at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival in the U.S. Dramatic Competition division, with a reviewer for THR declaring it "science fiction at its best."

He couldn't stay away from the silver screen for long. After being King of California for nearly eight years, Arnold Schwarzenegger is ready to take on a new role. Schwarzenegger is currently working on a deal with Lionsgate for a screenplay titled The Last Stand, and according to insiders, he's not far from committing to the project. Schwarzenegger would play the main character of the story, a small-town sheriff who tries to stop a drug lord from fleeing to the Mexican border. Screenwriter Andrew Knauer wrote the original spec script. Knauer eloquently described the concept to Hollyscoop...

Let me toot my own horn a bit. Of the 16 selected films out of 1,102 submissions, I accurately predicted 12. Out of the four that didn't fly on my radar we find American New Wave 25 selected Sean Durkin, who will make it back to back years in Park City. He featured the marvelous, creepy Mary Last Seen there, and would start lensing Martha Marcy May Marlene in the summer...but my thinking was he was Cannes-bound with this one...he may still be, but Sundance is world preem launching pad for the pic. Sam Levinson's debut film, which formerly went by "The Reasonable Bunch" and now has a conflict of interest with the Aussie film by the same title (The Loved Ones) has plenty of star wattage -- but I think the real reason to be buzzed about the film in young actor Ezra Miller who broke out in Afterschool and...

Dearest Ashley Greene and Kullan Kellan Lutz,
Well look at that - Kellan, I spelled your name wrong in my open letter to you! I’d apologize except that I think it’s a perfect example of how insignificant you are. I’m a massive Twi-dork and I sometimes forget your name. So why then do you guys think your irrelevant asses deserve $4 million for each Breaking Dawn movie?
Look dudes, I get where you’re coming from. You’re part of a mega-franchise, with the second installment, New Moon, raking in $140.7 million in its opening weekend alone. So sure, $4 million (or $8 million, if Breaking Dawn is split into two movies) doesn’t seem like that much compared to how much the Twilight franchise makes (and how much Kristen Stewart, Rob Pattinson and Taylor Lautner are reportedly earning). But let’s be realistic here.

Ashley Greene's cinematic path hasn't been gradual. It all started with a couple one-ep stints on a few shows, a gig on a quickly vaporized show called Desire, time as a McDonald's customer in King of California, an uncredited moment on Shark, and playing Kim #4 in Otis. Then everything changed. She put on the superstylish clothes, added a pixie hop to her step, and starting divining the future on the Twilight series. Now she's got a handful of movies under her belt, and is circling her next starring gig.
Risky Biz Blog reports that Greene is looking into the ghostly side of supernatural life. The actress is in talks to star in The Apparition, Dark Castle's latest supernatural horror that will, most likely, wrench her out of sparkles and overprotective families. Written and to be directed by Todd Lincoln, the story focuses on a couple in college who are...

PARIS -- The 33rd annual Deauville Festival of American Cinema will pay tribute to Michael Douglas, Sigourney Weaver and Sidney Lumet, whose latest movie, Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, will have its world premiere at the event, organizers said Monday.
The festival's only other world premiere will be Ben Affleck's Gone, Baby, Gone, the tale of two private dicks on the trail of a missing 4-year-old starring Casey Affleck, Morgan Freeman and Ed Harris.
A selection of Douglas' films will be aired as part of his tribute, including his latest picture King of California.
More than 120 movies will unspool during the 10-day festival, which takes place Aug. 31-Sept. 9 in the Normandy beach resort.
About half of these will make up a new section titled "American Nights", which will see 240 hours of movies screened around the clock in a 100-seater theater for the duration of the festival. Genres covered will include Westerns, film noir, horror and comedy.
Among new Hollywood fare showcased at Deauville will be Matt Damon starrer The Bourne Ultimatum and Western drama The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which stars Brad Pitt, both movies that will transfer in from Venice.

PARK CITY -- As the Sundance Film Festival winds to a close, First Look Pictures acquired North American rights to "King of California" for slightly less than $3 million Thursday night, sources close to the negotiations said.
A dark comedy from first-time screenwriter-director Mike Cahill, "King" stars Michael Douglas as a father who returns home after being released from a mental institution, much to the chagrin of his beleaguered 16-year-old daughter Evan Rachel Wood). She reluctantly embarks on one of her father's long string of crazy schemes: a plan to unearth gold buried by Spanish missionaries in California.
A First Look representative confirmed that the studio was in negotiations for rights to the project, produced by Alexander Payne, Michael London, Avi Lerner and Randall Emmett.
According to a source involved in the deal, the Weinstein Co., Lionsgate and ThinkFilm circled the film after its world premiere Wednesday night at the Eccles Theatre. One factor that gave First Look the edge, a source said, was that the studio's CEO Henry Winterstern read the script and was tracking the project because of his previous position as CEO at Capital Entertainment, where he once expressed interest in getting involved in the production.
