Based on ideas contained in The Book of Job.
To keep the ending a complete secret, the screenplay contained an entirely different version which was also shot to keep all those involved from having a knowledge of what the director intended to use.
In the Bum Larry scene, Acker had to shoot around the arriving guests for Ruben Studdard's 25th birthday party. The party was taking place at the Birmingham Museum of Art, and the scene was being shot underneath Interstate 20/59 which runs directly beside the museum. Several times during the scene you can catch a glimpse of a multi-colored "RS" on the wall of the museum in the background. "RS" is obviously for "Ruben Studdard". Extra ambient noise was also added to the scene to mask the party music resonating through the area.
The early morning return to the Bradford Park entrance was shot at a time where the spotlight which illuminates the sign was blown out. Acker therefore had to rig the lighting of the sign, and if one looks closely an extension cord can be seen running across the street to the sign. While rigging the lighting, Acker cut his arm so severely on the entrance wall bricks that he now has a permanent scar on his right forearm.
Assistant to the Producer, Lauren Rotkiewicz, was used three times as an extra. She appeared as a girl in Craig's office, the girl in the convenience store robbery, and she appears in the background of the scene in the bar with Jill and Jody.
