How to parody Saturday Night Live
TheLittleSongbird30 August 2021
It is very easy to say that the premise for "Weekday Afternoon Live" is not a novel one. The thing though it is a premise that is still a great one and 'Saturday Night Live' (which can be hit and miss with hosts and skits but often entertains and is interesting) is such an enjoyable and inspired show to parody. Parodying for 'Tiny Toon Adventures' was not new (many episodes did), that though doesn't matter as it is often done brilliantly the other times it was done and it is something that animation in general does so well.

"Weekday Afternoon Live" may not be one of the best episodes of 'Tiny Toon Adventures' (despite how some of my reviews for other episodes sound this is coming from somebody who likes the show enormously), or one of the best individual story episodes of the show. Other episodes did better, funnier and were more inspired on the parodying front. It is still very good with plenty to enjoy, and its best components are absolutely great even. Not everything works, but the great premise is handled very well indeed and it certainly left me entertained and nostalgic (expected from this kind of premise).

A perfect episode "Weekday Afternoon Live" isn't. Did find the Bart Simpson lookalike host on the annoying side.

Did think too that it could have had more energy and been more inventive. A vast majority of components are executed very well inded, it just overall could have done with more consistent spark which is where my rating falls down.

However, so much is great about "Weekday Afternoon Live". The animation is bright and colourful and has some lively character animation. The wild expressions are great too. The music is dynamic and characterful as always and the theme song has always brought a smile to my face. Something that was the case when a child and still is now. Much of the humour is sharp and has a nice wacky wit, helped by that the premise is one that suits that style of humour and the show's tone like a glove.

Loved the references, which were as a young adult easier to spot than as a child (the references still worked as a child as they were still timed beautifully and very funny) and they were done in a way that was witty and affectionate. And thankfully not random or shoehorned in. The story is not the most original one on the block and on the slight side, but the irresistibly vibrant energy and great character chemistry lifted it significantly. It was nice to see more of the supporting/recurring characters (a mix of the popular and not as commonly used) and they are handled with liveliness and the regulars are on top form. The voice acting is terrific from all.

In conclusion, very good. 8/10.
