Geomi sup(a.k.a. Spider Forest) is one of the most interesting and least straightforward films I've seen as I still had trouble piecing together the film's puzzle even after a second watch. After having achieved my own satisfying level of understanding of the film and its purpose, I can safely say that the plot development as well as attention to detail(such as the main character's physical quirks and subtle yet important reactions) are very impressive. One thing I noticed about this film is that almost every quote, every moment in which the slightest emphasis is placed, no matter how insignificant they may seem, are vital in making sense of what's going on.
Although the film has an incredible plot, the acting by the cast is in no way overshadowed by it as everyone does more than enough justice to their roles. Gam Wu-seong(as the main character, Kang Min) is so intense and believable in his role that it's often easy to forget that he's acting. Spider Forest is definitely one of the much needed films that rely on substance rather than style in order to capture the viewer's interest. Although there is very little 'action' in the film(bar one especially grotesque scene which contrasts greatly with the mood of a majority of the film), I was deeply interested in the plot and characters from start to finish. Because the film is one that is left open to interpretation(which, according to the director, was the intention) due in part to the surrealism and symbolism, the mystery can be solved in more ways than one. Even the film's cinematography goes beyond being merely eye-catching and artistic to the point of providing clues to the viewer as to the reality of the main character's situation. As a side note, I found the music that plays at the beginning and end of the movie to be beautiful and perfectly fitting to the chilling yet hopeful nature of the film.
In short, if you are able to stand the irregular structure of the plot and are open to the consistently dark atmosphere of the film, Spider Forest is very much worth watching. I'd highly recommend it as a movie that actually encourages the viewer to analyze it.
