Yep, blowing my own horn here as I was the programmer for this year’s edition of Canadian Music Week’s Music For The Screen film series and I must say that I’m rather pleased with the just-announced lineup. What have we got? The Flaming Lips’ Christmas On Mars projected in glorious 35 mm for the first time here in Toronto! The Canadian premiere of Jordan Galland’s Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Undead! Fantastic documentary Anvil! The Story Of Anvil, the subjects of which will be playing a gig at the music festival and will also be inducted into the Independent Music Awards Indies Hall of Fame! Joesph Arthur doc You Are Free! Belgian experimental dance film Here After - the second collaboration between dance troupe Ultima Vez and David Eugene Edwards of Wovenhand and 16 Horsepower! And, finally, Spare Change, the final piece of work from acclaimed Canadian animator -...

Big Brother requires a very special type of person. Of all the network reality shows out there, Big Brother is probably the one I would feel least comfortable appearing on (besides The Moment of Truth, though I'm not an evil enough of a person to be interesting on that show - “Oscar, have you ever stolen a candy bar from a gas station?”). There's no way I could ever go on Big Brother. In some ways, the Big Brother contestants are admirable – the willingness they have to just put themselves out there, knowing that they will be judged and examined so carefully and ruthlessly, is crazy. It also takes a big ego. One thing that has become as clear as day is that the more time these people spend inside the house, the crazier they become. It's cabin fever to the highest degree. I suppose all of this is an...

As with every Tuesday episode of Big Brother 9, tonight's episode was mostly a bore-fest. James and Chelsia reacted unfavorably to being nominated, vowing vengeance against Adam. The rest of this episode followed various alliances and contingency plans in case James, the true target, was able to wriggle himself free from being nominated.
PoV Competition
Big Brother 8's Dick Donato shows up to wake up the HGs by banging together pots and pans. He invites them outside for the PoV competition, a copy of one last season where they must drink 10 disgusting shots in 3 minutes, getting one croquet shot per beverage.
James is the only one man enough to drink all the shots, and therefore, he wins the veto. Somehow, bringing back Dick resulted in a relatively boring competition.
Joshuah + Ryan = Forever
With James taking himself off the block, Joshuah and Sharon realize one of them is guaranteed to go up.

Evel Dick Donato makes his triumphant return to the Big Brother house on Tuesday to host a very special Power of Veto competition. Dick, the winner of Big Brother 8, is the perfect love him or hate him kind reality TV contestant. Personally, I've always supported the evil reign of Mr. Donato. Last season, he basically intimidated the Big Brother house into handing him $500,000. Whether you liked him or not, you had to admit that Dick made things exciting in the house. While Dick's Power of Veto competition won't air on Big Brother until tomorrow night, it's already been filmed (TV is magic!) and we know the results. Click below if spoilers are something you're interested in.
Spoiler Warning!!! Do You Hate Spoilers? Then Go Away!!!
The PoV competition was called “Club Evel.” In the first part of the competition, Dick acts as bartender and gives out shots of his own creation from behind a bar.

Adam may be smarter than he looks. Or acts. Upon winning the Head of Household competition last Wednesday, Adam immediately expressed his dissatisfaction with doing so. He wanted nothing to do with all the expectations that being Head of Household brings. Truthfully, he's on to something. Will Kirby, the greatest Big Brother player of all time, was openly against ever winning HoH. It turns you into a target and it automatically creates enemies – no matter what, someone you nominate will be in the game the following week. Tonight, Adam made his nominations and Big Brother kindly aired a ten-minute, in-episode commercial for a new Hollywood movie.

If I'm correctly gaging the Big Brother fan base (and I think I am), Big Brother 9 has been something of a disappointment. These things happen, and I don't blame CBS or Allison Grodner. This season was something of a throw-away from the start, rushed into production thanks to the writers' strike. Since Big Brother was playing with house money (sort of), they decided to experiment with the couples twist. I, like many out there, thought the partners idea was a sound one. Unfortunately, it really mucked up the game play and didn't allow for the usual strategy that Big Brother house guests are used to. Reality show contestants generally base their game play (and overall behavior) on what they've seen on previous seasons. Just look at Survivor – every staple of game play was set during the show's first season. Without history to look back on and facing an entirely different set of rules,...

Big Brother 9 has picked up the intensity as of late, mostly thanks to the greatest moment of the season – Matt crying after he was back doored during the Power of Veto ceremony. That was just spectacular. With Matt and his arrogant, scheming ways out of the house, the competition is up in the air. Things will change, as Natalie will now have to fend from for herself and, hopefully, bust out of her Matt-worshiping ways. It makes it simpler that the Big Brother house is split into two distinct factions – the Alliance of Pairs (Joshuah/Sharon and Chelsia/James) and the Alliance of Miscellany (Ryan, Natalie, Sheila and Adam). Umm...the Alliance of Miscellany is a temporary name until we come up with something better. Who knows – maybe it'll stick.
#8 – Natalie
I just think Natalie is going to be too distraught with Matt's departure to do much in the rest of the game.

It really was James' week on Big Brother 9. As if getting the chance to come back into the house mere minutes after being evicted wasn't enough, then he had to go and win Head of Household. Then he won the Power of Veto. Then he wouldn't rest until he discovered who the three people that didn't vote to bring him back were.
Tonight, James' reign came to an end on Big Brother, but not before getting one last moment of total power. Matt cried, Natalie continued to pine over a man she will never get, Sheila continued to play the game well, and we got to catch up on where Big Brother 8 winner Dick Donato and his daughter Daniele are. Unfortunately, the answer isn't “not on my TV screen.”

One week ago today, James was evicted from the Big Brother house. Then he got to come back in, won HoH, put up two people who didn't want him back, won PoV, and backdoored the man who lied about wanting him James back in the house. Overall, it was a good week for James, made even better by the fact that he prolongs the time he doesn't know that we all know about his gay porn past. When he finally gets out of the house and realizes his secret is out, it's going to be a hard pill to swallow.
Tonight, the ironically fabulous Julie Chen is back for the eviction of either Matt or Ryan. Seeing as how Big Brother's last two evictions didn't fully take, I wonder if this week will be any different.
Oh God, the "previously on" package begins with James being evicted.

Another week of Big Brother 9's Power of Veto night came and went, and as always, it featured more filler than an hour-long American Idol results show. Sheila apologized to Adam for being mean to him, then turns around and throws him under the bus. We get a dull PoV competition and the dumbest Bible study group ever.
Indiana Jones and the Lost Crusade
Adam, Ryan and Matt insist on having yet another deep theological debate. Tonight's discussion: what is the Ark of the Covenant? Thanks to the Indiana Jones franchise, they know it contained the Ten Commandments and other words of God. They also know the Holy Grail is the cup of Christ (made of wood, because that is surely the cup of a carpenter). Adam suggests that, when they leave the Big Brother house, they should team up to find the Ark of the Covenant. I hope they...

This is becoming a problem for me. I've been doing these spoiler articles for this season of Big Brother 9 and, up until recently, I've quite enjoyed it. I'm the kind of guy who, generally, likes instant gratification. However, only to a certain extent. If you watched last night's episode of Big Brother, you know what I'm talking about. The Head of Household competition, that James ultimately won, was prominently featured. Well, perhaps that's an understatement – it was half of the freaking episode! Now, if I hadn't known the outcome, it probably would have been an entertaining 30 minutes of my life, but since I did know the outcome it was boring as all hell. How do you live feeders do it? You know what's happened, how it's happened and why, yet you seem to have a great time watching the episodes in addition to the 24/7 feeds. I wish I had your loyalty,...

Big Brother 9 is growing on me. This is weird for me to say, because I absolutely hated tonight's episode. The thing is, and it's a big thing, I knew exactly what was going to happen during the episode. I've been harping the hell out of this, I know, but tonight it was very important. Normally, knowing the outcome of a Big Brother episode isn't that important because the random action within the house is enjoyable enough. However, tonight's episode spent literally half the episode covering the Head of Household competition. 32 minutes. Considering I knew the result of that competition, it was not great television.
James!
The first half hour of the episode was entirely devoted to the Head of Household competition that began on Wednesday. Here are the stakes – the house is in two separate factions. Matt, Natalie, Ryan, Adam and Sheila on one side, with James, Chelsia, Sharon and Joshuah on the other.

I have to tread lightly here for all of you non Big Brother live feed watchers or spoiler mongerers. If you only watch the CBS broadcasts and nothing else, then you are still unaware of who won the all important Head of Household competition. Therefore, I can't really discuss the thought process behind the mystery HoH's nominations, which we now know. I think these nominations will take a lot of people by surprise come Sunday, but if you paid attention to Wednesday's Big Brother non-eviction episode, then it makes a whole lot of sense. In fact, I actually kind of predicted this in my Big Brother power rankings yesterday.
Spoiler Warning!!! You Know The Drill!!! Turn Around!!!
The new Head of Household is James. He made a deal with Natalie at the end of the epic marathon of an HoH competition – James wouldn't nominate Natalie or Matt this week. At the nomination ceremony,...

Big Brother is a funny game sometimes. After an eviction episode last night where the same nine people who began the night inside the house ended up inside the house, the balance of power noticeably shifted. That's what happens when a formerly evicted and scorned house guest returns. The Head of Household competition, which did not end by the time the episode was over, also featured a number of verbal deals which will, at the very least, greatly influence the events of the coming week. Being the Big Brother spoiler afficianado I am, I know who won the Head of Household competition last night and, therefore, I've taken that into account with these power rankings.

Big Brother 9 has, by and large, been a frustrating season. The coupling experiment was an ambitious attempt at innovation, but I think I speak for all Big Brother fans when I say that it didn't particularly work. The game play was completely bogged down. It was extremely difficult to get a beat on what was going down in the house. Even the house guests, it seemed, didn't know what to do with themselves – they were playing an entirely different game than they'd seen on TV. Now that the game is back to an individual one, things are more promising, thought the last two weeks have culminated in the most anti-climactic of live evictions. Tonight's (or last night's if you're on the east coast) Big Brother eviction episode was the most egregiously anti-climactic episode (probably) in the show's history.
Anyways, we have the results of tonight's Head of Household competition below.

Even though tonight's episode of Big Brother 9 was action-packed, nothing really happened. Much ado about nothing. Not that this was all Cbs's fault. Some of the blame goes to the house guests. There was a live eviction, the return of an evicted house guest, and then the beginning of a marathon Head of Household competition. Julie Chen proved once again that she probably shouldn't be doing live television, and we saw how wide open this Big Brother game is right now. The house is in chaos.
The Quagmire
Once Ryan put James on the block in place of Chelsia, the crap hit the fan. Matt immediately taunts Joshuah about his failed plan to get Matt up on the block. Chaos ensues in the house. Chelsia is pissed at Ryan for nominating James. Ryan defends himself pretty well. Ryan talks to Josh – they remain on good terms. Sharon, upset with Matt's bravado,...

On tonight's episode of Big Brother 9, we get the typical aftermath of the nominations of Chelsia and Sharon. Now that the pairs have been split up, these houseguests are running wild with new alliances. There are deals within deals within deals, and it's a bit confusing to keep everything straight. Everyone seems to be playing everyone at some point. We get the first singles Power of Veto competition, which is a rehash of last season's Nasty Christmas, complete with a red unitard. In the words of Jesus, my God, my God, why hast thou forsaken us?
Is Ryan a Genius?
We all know Natalie is hopelessly in love with Matt, and he has no interest in her other than how it can help him win the game. Joshuah, jealous of Ryan's alliance with Matt, suggests to the women that they convince Ryan to backdoor Matt and, in return, promise Ryan two free weeks.

Now the game gets interesting on Big Brother 9. The house guests are finally playing as individuals. Realistically, it's going to take a week or two to figure out what the new alliances are and to see which house guests will stay aligned with their prescribed partner and who will go off on their own. The big wild card is which evicted house guest will return to the house. For instance, if Jen returns to the house, that gives Ryan both a big advantage and puts a target on his back. I guarantee these power rankings will change drastically by next week once we get a better feel for the new alliances and see who Ryan nominates, but until then this is what I've got.

SYDNEY -- Kriv Stenders' unlikely suburban romance Blacktown proved the maxim that films don't need to big budgets to connect with audiences as the 52nd Sydney Film Festival came to a close Saturday night. The micro-budget Australian Blacktown took home the prize for best feature film from the Sidebar Program as part of the inaugural Urban Cinefile Audience Awards, while Danish director Susanne Bier's family drama Brothers was voted best feature from the Contemporary World Cinema program. Awards were handed out after a screening of the closing night film in its Australian premiere, Hayao Miyazake's Japanese animated hit Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle). Mad Hot Ballroom, a crowd pleaser about kids from different schools competing for a ballroom dancing prize and directed by Marylin Agrelo from the United States, won the award for best documentary across both sections. Chris Landreth's Ryan (Canada) won best short from the World Cinema selection and Juan Pablo Zaramella's Journey To Mars (Argentina) took home best short in the Sidebar program.
