Why did they make it so the room was dark?

This game on the first setting which was the easiest you saw the haunted house that you had to navigate through. All the other levels had the screen completely dark and you could not see anything. This made the game less fun as only the dark screens had doors that had to be unlocked and made this game a pain to navigate. Still it had some good scary sound effects as you had to evade the spider, bat and ghost as you tried to reassemble the urn and somehow use it to escape the house. Still, this game had a problem a lot of the simple games of this era had...the settings either made them to easy are to hard. I would have loved to have been able to play this game with the doors from the dark levels only in the one setting that you could see everything. It would have been challenging without you blindly hitting walls every five seconds. You could still have the dark house with the doors too, but let me tell you at one point I would have to say that those levels were nearly impossible to get through in one piece.
