Trivialidades:

A number of characters have names that are artistic references. "Roscuro" refers to the "Chiaroscuro Movement", Botticelli is a reference to the artist Sandro Botticelli, painter of "The Birth of Venus", and Boldo is named after Giuseppe Arcimboldo, a famous surrealistic painter who composed faces and figures out of various objects in the way that Boldo himself is made out of fruit, vegetables and kitchen utensils.

Errores:

Continuidad: When Despereux is about to be dropped into the rat dungeon, he has red string wrapped around his waist. The camera cuts away to show the dungeon, and when it comes back to see Despereux, the red string is missing.

Citas:

Narrator: If you know anything about fairy tales, then you know that a hero doesn't appear until the world really needs one.

Such the Disappointment...

Take one beloved Newbery award winning children's tale, strip it of all charm, menace, heart and meaning, chop the original plot coarsely/carelessly into indigestible chunks, and over-season with new and unnecessary content and characters. Simmer into a tepid broth for approximately 100 minutes and you'll end up with the thin, unappetizing gruel that is this big-screen animated version "The Tale of Despereaux."

In short, Unredeemably dreadful.

We've loved Kate DiCamillo's book for some time, and despite Hollywood's dismal track record with translating lit to screen, we were really looking forward to to seeing Despereaux make the leap. What could possibly go wrong? How could anyone mess up such a lovely story? The thread of DiCamillo's original text unspools beautifully all by itself! But here we seem to have a case of too many cooks in the kitchen, celebrity chefs devoid of taste or talent.

Do yourself and your kids a HUGE favor and listen to the audio version instead, brilliantly read -- no, performed -- by Graeme Malcolm.
