A risqué little romcom that, nevertheless, has its moments
inkblot1125 January 2007
Katya (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is an advertising executive with an abundance of talent. However, she is prone to coming in late, taking early and long lunches, and pursuing personal interests while at work. Most importantly, she is driven to become a somebody in San Fran and is constantly searching for that rich, high-profile husband. Oh, and she is ruthless to those who stand in her way. On the elevator, she meets a dreamboat named Charles (Colin Ferguson) but plays it cool. In the meantime, she is fixated with getting an invitation to THE social event of the season. One day, again on the elevator, Charles stops the contraption and insists she have dinner with him. She accepts. That big spender, Charles, he takes her out to sit by a fountain and snack on hotdogs from the stand. Is this man really the stepping stone to her big plans to be the "it" girl of this season and of those to come? Doris Day fans, beware. You will probably enjoy this romantic comedy, as I did, but this is not your mother's romcom. It has some risqué ideas and situations that make it a bit of a walk on the wild side, at times. However, Hewitt is adorable and beautiful as the girl with a mission and Ferguson is quite a pleasure as the love interest. The script has some marked originality, which is always welcome, and the costumes and San Francisco setting are to be greatly enjoyed. If you decide to watch this film, do make sure teenage girls are not hovering over your shoulder. This is not a good choice for impressionable girls. But, for those adult romance fans, add this one to your viewing list, by all means. True love and happy endings are still what most of us live for and this movie delivers on this account, yes.

Great outfits, what a cutie!
HotToastyRag17 July 2022
In the same vein of Confessions of a Shopaholic, Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber mainly borrows from the title rather than the plot or type of protagonist. Sure, there are tons of adorable fashion ensembles for Jennifer Love Hewitt to wear, and she narrates her journey as she tries to get ahead in her career, but she doesn't have an addiction problem and she's not particularly endearing.

Instead of being unable to stop shopping and brightening her life with material things, Jennifer just wants to become successful and popular. She's willing to do anything to get one rung higher up, and along the way she meets a gorgeous and wealthy guy: Colin Ferguson. Ladies, he's just as yummy as he is in Cedar Cove, but he doesn't have any complex character to work with. He's simply eye candy. In fact, in one scene, he takes his shirt off in the most random situation ever. It's so random, both he and Jennifer actually giggle at the ridiculousness of it all.

But does anyone popping in this movie actually care at a sensible plot? Probably not. You'll be watching it for Jennifer's cute outfits and to see how she can win success, money, popularity, and an insanely gorgeous guy.

not the best TV movie out there.

Warning: Spoilers
SPOILERS THROUGH:

I didn't much like this one even though Love-Hewett shines as the social climbing Katya. I think the movie had it's moments but by and large it doesn't take itself seriously through most of it and takes itself to seriously at the end. The result is a movie that maybe moderately fun to watch at times, but doesn't ever rise to being really good, mainly because it's trying to be all things(satire, comedy, romance.) I wish it had chosen a direction and stuck to it.

One of the things I really disliked is the whole adopt a child story. This is by and large a comedy and that seems to serious a subject to bring into a comedy/satire. It was rather baffling.

Then there's the movie's comedy overall. The comedic aspects of this movie weren't really all that funny, in fact there was some gross stuff, and many an obnoxious moment as well. One gets the feeling this movie really wanted to be a clever satire on the rich and privileged but it never really becomes original and in a movie like this originality would have been welcomed. I was actually wincing at times, there were a lot of predictable jokes and the humor at many times, fell flat.

The romantic part of the movie didn't make a whole lot of sense since it happened so abruptly and was rather unbelievable but by this point much of the movie is unbelievable so you kind of go with it. Plus, one positive is the two romantic leads do actually have oodles of chemistry and that helps the story.

The speech at the end can be predicted. This is the kind of movie that one might respond to the ending but think "cmon!!" at the same time. Also not much is done with the supporting cast. There's a whole array of fun sassy characters who it would have been fun to see developed and given some type of storyline. Everyone exists as Love-Hewit's costars but Hewitt herself doesn't have a lot to do at first except stomp around buying things and annoying people. So, for me anyway, there's a lot about this movie that fell flat.

That being said, it's still watchable and has some cute moments. But it isn't a movie I'd recommend or say is a must see. I'm always up for satires and comedies but this one didn't quite do it for me. Cheers for Hewitt though, she always rocks! My vote's around 5 out of 10.

If you have nothing else to watch....
MCM110113 March 2005
This was a somewhat entertaining and silly piece of fluff that will keep you from being not too bored. JLH is again playing the perky and cute and always showcasing her assets in another forgettable flick. Here she plays a Paris Hilton type who does what it takes to be seen and her mission is to go to this Royal Ball that is the biggest event of the year. She hits a snag when she meets the man of her dreams and of course dramatic miscommunication ensues. The only comedic highlight is Joey Lawrence playing JLH's gay pal. Again, if you're bored or are a huge JLH fan then knock yourself out, but if not, you're not missing much.

Jennifer Love Hewitt has always been the beautiful face I looked when watching an episode of the Drama Ghost Whisperer and the lady I always thought was never the greatest actress, but an actress with large potential in some projects. This is not one of them. Confessions of a Sociopathic Social Climber not only makes up it's own words, but pretty much uses every character/plot point we've seen in a Romantic Comedy, a straight forward Comedy, or a plain Drama. Her character is not only impossible to like, but also a bore and a plain drag to see on screen. Being a TV movie with the minimum length requirement of 85 minutes I thought to myself not to approach this movie in a hard way, but I have too. Its horrible and a dread to watch.

While trying to be funny, it fails, and while trying to be smart, it's dumb. It can never be what it wants. Every character in this movie is a one dimensional mess who was taken straight out of another movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt's character makes you feel you're losing brain cells every time she comes on screen and her over the top, Prima Donna attitude gets incredibly annoying and almost makes it hard to concentrate. While the story is majorly cliché, so is, well, everything else in this jumbled up mess of a movie. Airing on Oxygen, this movie is clear not to have a big budget, but even lower budget films can do better than this. Confessions prove even TV films are less tolerable than bad mainstream ones.

Katya Livingston (Hewitt) is an unlikable Prima Donna who has everything anybody could want, but she still wants more. After hearing about a party that "anybody who's anybody will be at" she can't resist but to somehow bumble her way and show some cleavage to get an invite. She pesters everyone and sucks up to anybody who can get her one step closer to the golden key invite to the party. In the meantime, she slacks on her job as an advertising executive promoting different shampoo products and currently promoting on "The San Francisco Treat" Rice-a-Roni. She loses touch on that to become more focused on her "current dream" of getting the invite.

The "spoiled bitch" attitude gets old and tiresome. When making the protagonist unlikable the whole film and even when giving an apology to people she's hurt, still makes her the most hated person on the screen, its a wonder why we should focus or even give the slightest damn why she's in her position. Why do we care about some "I'm so pretty, you can't get me!" girl when one of the other characters could have had a better movie. Jennifer Love Hewitt's role is lackluster beyond belief making it a wonder why someone of her talent was chosen to play such a low grade, zero part.

There isn't a ton to say about Confessions other than it's a lame, Oxygen TV film. Just because this one has no attract factor doesn't mean other TV films are the same. Lifetime originals like Lost Holiday: The Jim & Suzanne Shemwell Story and Girl, Positive are some of my favorites as far as Television films go and those are so well written they should have been in theaters. Confessions is a bitter movie with low grade acting and a story line to wake the dead. A stuck up girl who for once in a life can't have something she wants? We haven't seen that before, oh no! Starring: Jennifer Love Hewitt, Colin Ferguson, Natassia Malthe, Joseph Lawrence, and James Kirk. Directed by: Dana Lustig.

Really stupid movie
joanna_h13 March 2005
I watched this last night on Oxygen and it was REALLY bad! It was so bad that I could not stop watching it (like an accident that you can't look away from). What on earth were Colin Ferguson and Jennifer Love Hewitt doing in a movie this god-awful! I really like Colin Ferguson and I think he has potential and he wasn't bad in this, but the plot was so ridiculous. Totally stupid and unrealistic. Maybe it was supposed to be like that. It took place in San Franciso (where I used to live) and it could not have been more un-San Francisco. Like someone like Jennifer Love Hewitt is going to be an advertising executive ... gimme a break! I know sometimes you have to suspend disbelief, but this was too much. The movie was trying to be somewhere between Legally Blonde and Bridget Jones Diary, but catering to the absolute lowest common denominator. The writers should be shot!

Pointless waste of time.
gadfly1329 January 2006
Blech! Ms. Hewitt demonstrates more cleavage than talent and an enormous assortment of bras.

The plot is pointlessly humorless: set piece after set piece. . .each less amusing than the previous. Some films are so bad they're funny, but this is one is so bad it's more than a waste of time; say rather it is about as much fun as passing pencils.

This was on the movie channel one rainy morning and there was nothing else to watch. Frankly, I considered going out to mow the lawn at the ten minute mark, but I didn't want to hurt the lawn-mower.

Pass.

This is the worst film i have ever seen.
hellodudeycheese13 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This may count as a spoiler, as some people may wish to watch a film before taking any opinion on it, but i feel i have to announce to the world that this is the worst film i have ever watched. The beginning is odd, to say the least, it's stretched, unfunny, copied and poorly written. The middle, if there is one, is of the story of a social climber, however, the lady in question, is already at the top of her social ladder- so why sis this film so called?. the ending, well the ending is pure drivel.

The acting throughout is nothing better than one would expect from a school production.

Continuously and unbelievably contrived.

Its predictable, and was so badly produced i think it gave me ulcers.

Does anyone agree? I don't see how anyone cannot.

Falls off the ladder.

Warning: Spoilers
With me and a friend having enjoyed Heartbreakers, when we saw this on DVD for one pound,i thought it was worth a try.And while Hewitt does a very good performance, the film feels very empty.

The Plot: Hewitt plays Katya Livingstton.A woman who works very high-up in a major advertising company. She finds out that there is a "Party of the year" coming up and the show is not on the guest list!(The might be due to ruining a wedding by letting a newly married couples husband put his head up her skirt!)So Katya feels that she must do everything she can to get an invite. But when she meets the man of her dreams, she has to decided if the man means More to her than the party..

View on the film: The best part of the film is Hewitts performance. She does a very good job at being seen as a very mean woman, while saying some biting lines("My boyfriend was an Ewok in Star Wars!)The screenplay is by Eric Charmelo and Nicole Snyder, and the thing the ruins the film is that they make Katya look so rich, the you really don't care if she picks the party or the guy.Because there is no realness to her (eg:Bridget Jones)so it just makes you feel that she can just buy anything and any one from a high-street shop.

Final view on the film: A very good performance by Hewitt, thats badly let down by a very hollow plot.

A good made-for-t.v. movie!
Go_Skins16 March 2005
Saw this one the other night. I thought it was pretty funny. It stars Jennifer Love-Hewitt as Katya, an ad exec. with a couple close friends. She tries to talk to people throughout this movie trying to be the "in-crowd." She learns in the end that it's not really worth trying to be there after she meets a nice guy that falls for her. She ends up hurting him and regrets making a huge mistake. I like Love-Hewitt movies and the characters that she plays in them. I think this movie could/should be a DVD with some extras thrown in. Definitely a movie that you should watch with your partner after you put the kids to bed! 7/10 on this one!

See it for Love
Skippy-6017 April 2006
All I have to say is this: the one and only reason to see this movie is because of Jennifer Love Hewitt! She's in practically every scene, and her comedic skills in this film are outstanding. It really shows that she can hold her own amongst this generations best comedic actresses. I haven't laughed out loud at a movie in a long time, and I did at this one because of Love Hewitt's hilarious character!!! One of her best roles EVER, and hopefully she continues to churn out these co-medically brilliant performances! It's about time Hollywood (and the world) tuned into her talent! Overall, the film is a bit cheesy and shallow, but Hewitt's turn as the selfish Katya is amazing, and it's really something that we haven't seen her do before. Quite refreshing!

A Funny little TV Number that will leave you smiling
Robert_duder13 March 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Confessions seemed like a cute little chick flick based on a best selling novel so I gave it a try along with my beautiful girlfriend Sarah. We were both pleasantly surprised in the humorous and well performed low budget TV Film that I think could have easily been released theatrically without many changes at all. It far exceeded some of the other crap I've seen make it to theaters. I have no doubt that part of the film's charm and the reason why it works is female director Dana Lustig. Most certainly a male director could not have pulled off the same level of humor and content that Lustig manages. Definitely made with women in mind, I still enjoyed the humor of a woman who is more or less the most imperfect human being on the planet and gets what's coming to her while still becoming the hero in the end.

Jennifer Love Hewitt is nearly astonishing as the delightfully horrible Katya Livingston. She's shallow, materialistic, self-involved, and not to mention a liar, thief and flakey. Not many take to her with the exception of her gay best friend. This is Hewitt's best role to date I think. She manages to be completely horrible to everyone and yet still be the heroine that you feel sorry for and root for. Colin Ferguson plays her love interest, her love god, Charles Fitz. If nothing else he's any woman's dream man. He's good looking, romantic, sentimental, and sensitive. His performance is good but not stand out. He's more there to be a pretty face and certainly accomplishes that. His chemistry with Hewitt and her character is very good which is something considering how awful her character is. Another surprise and stand out performance is the long missing return of none other than Joey...I mean...Joseph Lawrence...WHOA!! Lawrence plays Hewitt's gay best friend who is searching for love, Ferguson. Although his role is very small he plays gay very well (yes that's a compliment.) This is his best role possibly ever as well. Hewitt and Lawrence have great chemistry as well and he is comedy relief as well. Character actor Daniel Roebuck is great as Hewitt's boss and Sonja Bennett also does a good job in her small role as Eliza, Hewitt's other best friend and co-worker.

The combination of a fun cast that really work well together and a good story that is also tons of fun makes this a nice little TV treat. It won't blow you away but it's fun and it'll surprise you with it's cute little characters. I think I would love to see Hewitt reprise this role again, in fact I think a TV Series or film series would be very profitable. The film is a little bit tasteless and dips into sexual promiscuity and really for Hewitt's character to find redemption is pretty far fetched but it's still worth seeing, especially if you've read the book because I would think it's a worthy follow up to reading the novel. 7/10

Very clichéd but fun
Gordon-114 June 2007
This film is about a woman who does everything to climb up the social ladder, and pretends to be someone who she isn't.

I bought this film for 1 pound, and it was not even second hand. Hence, I did not have much expectations for it.

It is obvious that this is made for TV. The close ups are too close that the face occupies 95% of the screen. The way the camera moves between Frangiapani and Katja in the Indian restaurant looks more like a soap opera than a film. The film is so full of cliché. The obligatory gay friend who is constantly suicidal is too over the top that is almost derogatory.

Despite all these shortcomings, I confess that I enjoyed the film. It is fun, brain-off film that makes you forget your troubles. Jennifer Love Hewitt looks stunning in the film. It's a comedy that works!

Sexy and Funny T.v Movie!
ladies_pinch15 January 2006
Jennifer Love Hewit is hilarious as sexy superficial Katya Livingston, a she's kinda played this role before as her character is very similar to her one in Heartbreakers. But still i think she's very funny. Confessions, has a simple plot, a sexy Young socialite, who believes everything can be done fabulously! During this film Katya tries desperately to get into the biggest party of the season, The royal Ball. One problem, the host-est,Dove, hasn't invited her, as she hates her blah blah blah. Anyways its hilarious watching Katya stop at nothing to get in, even almost ruining things with her true love! The highlight of the film for me was Joseph Lawrence, he is so funny as Furguson, Katya's gay best friend. I think this was a brave role for him, seeing as most of the characters he's played have been, tough macho men. This proves how talented he really is, i would recommend this film to people purely for his performance. Plus i think he pulls of the bald look very well! Bald or with hair, he's still hot!

Pretty good, for a JLH movie
carlarina10 July 2006
I usually detest Jennifer Love Hewitt. Especially after the horrid "The Truth About Love" which I (very unfortunately) happened to watch.

But I must say I was pleasantly surprised by Ms Hewitt in this movie. It wasn't so bad, and in fact, was pretty good if I might add. The movie doesn't make any pretensions about what it's supposed to be i.e. a good, funny, light-hearted piece of fluff. Didn't feel like a made-for-TV movie at all too. I watched it when I was feeling kinda down and it actually did the trick.

Watch it for the air-headed humor, JLH's wardrobe (which fully capitalised on her "bosom buddies", as always), and the zippy dialog.

Oh..and the scene at the fountain with Katya and Charles was really really sweet. Rather believable too. Now, if only I can be as witty as Katya Livingston when I'm sitting at the fountain, munching on a hot dog with my ultimate dream guy......

A Too Vicious Romantic Comedy
tabuno22 January 2019
17 June 2006. In a daring move, Jennifer Love Hewitt finds herself as a very nasty, not very well liked, and a much off-putting character in this rather overly vicious, narcissistic romantic comedy. Unfortunately, even the personable Hewitt can't quite Teflon coat off the negative vibes of her character making this film hard to enjoy with such an unlikeable character. But Hewitt manages to put on a decent performance and go with the script making the overall movie a tolerable, sometimes funny, sometimes despicable experience. The build up is too long in coming, yet the unusual premise of sociopath who gets her due as a romantic comedy is savaged by preserverance and Hewitt. Six out of Ten Stars.

i really enjoyed this film!
sannerox15 March 2005
i really enjoyed watching this film, i think that the acting was fantastic and both actors and actresses were very good. The plot of the story was based on a very good book that i also enjoyed reading by the fabulous author Adele Lang. The film was inspiring and was a great laugh and would be enjoyed by many people. I specially enjoyed Katya Livingston's gay best friend who really amused me and really made the film worthwhile. The film is very different from the book confessions of a sociopathic social climber as maybe is not as good as the ending is very different in the book and oxygen film companies changed that and made it worse as in the book there is no happy ending and things turn out a lot different. but overall i think that the film was a worthwhile watch and would very much like to see it again!

Cinderella's mean step-sister goes to the ball!
MyMovieTVRomance19 October 2021
Like Cinderella in reverse- if the focus were on one of the step-sisters instead. And she's bad! She's really, really bad!

I did not like the main character at all, and her character arc felt forced and fake. As a fan of Jennifer Love Hewitt, I watched this for her, and that was really my only reason for watching. It's an okay movie, but nothing special. Most suited to fans of the stars only.

Slapstick comedy.
dy15828 June 2006
In the world we are living nowadays, it's sadly at times that appearances matter before everything else. And watching it being played out, maybe kind of funny and a little poignant as well.

Katya Livingston (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is a 28-year-old advertising executive who will do anything to climb up the San Francisco's social ladder. Though she is an asset to the advertising company she works for, she has always been wanting to live it up and be part of the thick of things in the San Francisco's socialite scene.

When it became very clear that she was not invited to a ball, she was clearly furious and had been trying means and ways to crash into it after even learning her own friends are being invited. In the midst of all these things, Katya had been trying to search for her Mr. Right and though her friend in the office told her that what Katya wanted is only all in her dreams, the latter insisted that her Mr. Right is really out there.

And it happened to be the one she once met at the lift lobby at the place where she works. She soon learnt the name is Charles (Colin Ferguson).

On the day of the ball, Katya's two friends managed to find a way out for her to enter. And when the hostess saw Katya, catfight ensued before it was revealed later in a speech presentation which Katya has to make (the ball was the benefit of the poor African children and Katya happened to have adopted a son from Uganda) that whatever she did was the sake to be part of the social scene. And she is not as perfect as what everyone else thinks.

So, did Katya eventually get what she really wanted in the end? Well, unless you are watching it.

This is like one of those kind of slapstick comedies I had expected. Recommeded for those who like some fun and laughs.

I confess to loving "Confessions!"
purely_polyester15 March 2005
I loved this movie! I thought it was a campy, soapy, sexy, and salacious romp in the hay! And shocked that it was made for TV. It could've been released theatrically.

Love was fantastic as the fabulously ruthless Katya Livingston. And Colin Ferguson was not only excellent as her love interest, but incredibly charming. Did I mention sexy?

The writing was dead on and the directing was great. Very fun. Very stylized. Kudos to the film for raising the bar on made-for-TV movies and being a pure pleasure to watch from beginning to end!

A must see!

She does the job!
tom05575 August 2005
JLH sheds her goody-two-shoes persona for a hard-driving character that makes this movie WORK! Katya is a non-naive ingénue to the workplace; she's a predator who understands what needs to be done in corporate America. She'll do what it takes to be successful in the world of fashion journalism. Especially delicious are the scenes wherein the in vogue bars change constantly...anyone who has lived in the city has gone through that. In this movie, we see Katya's great heart that is only covered up her desire to climb the corporate ladder. We see Katya's desire for the "perfect" man interfere with her career goals. Watch the movie to find out how she resolves the conflict. I hope JLH explores her full range of acting ability and singing ability both of which are proved in this film.

I have great hopes for the Ghost Whisperer on CBS this fall.

Jennifer Love Hewitt movie with a US DVD ?
alan_truelove16 July 2005
Warning: Spoilers
Well, let us at least be thankful for: (a) JLH's very attractive haircut - long, fringed across the brow. (As compared to "If Only", and "The Truth above Love", q.v.) (b) Having been shown on Cable TV, (I don't remember if this one was released or not), one presumes a DVD will be available in a few weeks. This is an old plot, bad scheming professional girl in NYC repents, makes a public confession and regains boyfriend. I'm not sure a script like Pretty Woman, Runaway Bride or Notting Hill would do any good for JLH. (Like Julianne Nicholson, JLH is - at least for another decade - irretrievably the All-American girl next door, cheerful, healthy, etc - for both, incursions into any exotic sexual area don't quite come off). It's possible that JLH (or advisers) have chosen the best possible route for her; the next big test will be the NBC series in Sept. '05. But even if that fails, JLH has a clear niche based on a world-wide fan-base, and low-cost (one presumes) or foreign production romantic movies (not perhaps Comedy like the Tuxedo) which she can now demonstrably sustain alone without any other star. Can Sara Michelle Geller do that? JLH is in the same category as Julianne -- foreigners (Eur. and Oriental) rave about them, cannot understand why they are not big stars.

This is a drama,comedy...Realistic and very ugly person Katya Livingston
numedeuser6 January 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I hate the main character Katya Livingston's guts, and when i detest a character so much, it doesn't matter how she/he looks. But i dislike and reject every character who socializes with this abominable Katya. Some do not have a vertical column, others are men thinking with their genitals, others are just weak people... I am strictly talking about the character and not the actress of which i do not care.I am not giving a mark to a movie, judging it by the physical attractiveness of an actress or actor. I noticed, a lot of reviews are influenced by the attraction or distaste for an actress or actor, and not the way they act. This is a one time see movie. I do not want to see it again mainly because all the movie revolves around this Katya. I gave it an 8, because of its realistic characters and events, and not because of its erotic content. Some people want to see only beautiful things in a movie, and if they don't then they mark it as a poor one. I bet that some women, after seeing this movie and realizing they behave and think a lot like the main character, and still not having all the things she has, might say that the character is not realistic. Well ladies, you were either not living in a similar society, or have not encountered all the kind of miserable people who facilitated Katya in some form, or both of the above. I do not think this movie is sexy in any way, because of its immense misery and miserable characters, although some almost naked.

credits have an error!
karabuttree7 February 2013
My daughter's dad, Peter Anthony Abrahams, was in the bunny suit. I have JLH's autograph to prove it! I think because there was a similarly listed performer, the picked the wrong person.

I remember being so jealous, pregnant at the time, that she was in lingerie and rubbing all over him!! Glad she's a nice person :-)

I enjoyed the movie, it was fluffy fun. I hope JLH comes back to our island for more work. It was exciting for us all, as she was a gave of mine from TV.

I think movie makers should seriously reconsider such lengthy movie titles.
