A sweet but sad short
freemantle_uk22 February 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Between Us is a short 8 and half minute film about two nine year old kids in a traffic jam. The main focus is on Lukas (Luke Bromley) who is struck in the back of his parents car as they are arguing about taking the wrong route. Lukas tries to distract himself by playing with his football and then listen to his CD player which runs out of battery power. He then sees Amanda (Madeline Duggan (best known as Lauren Branning from Eastenders)) and both command silently. Both obviously like each other but this was only a one off meeting for the two youngsters.

The film works because it's short, touching, convicting because of the two young actors and it could happen to anyone, especially for young people. It was shot to a professional standard and filming on a raining day adds to the gloomy feeling, especially for Lukas. I think it was also a good move to just show Lukas speaking, and leave Amanda as a silence character. I personally like Madeline Duggan, I think she is a young actress with a good future and if I ever get a chance to write and direct my screenplay she would be my first choice for the lead role.

However, this short has one of the worst taglines ever.

This little film is worth watching on youtube.
