Aronofsky, Clooney and del Toro are heading to the Lido; Alberto Barbera reveals the ones that got away.
Ahead of the world’s oldest festival, the buzz is palpable once again.
However, the flavour to this year’s Venice line-up is noticeably different from recent editions with an emphasis on internationalism, discoveries and innovation over large canvas studio fare.
If last year’s Venice lineup was a veritable treasure trove of big name Us and international filmmakers, this year’s lineup has a slightly more tempered feel to it, which nonetheless remains full of intrigue.
In the last four years Venice has kickstarted major Oscar runs for four Us movies [Gravity, Birdman, Spotlight and La La Land], however last year, for the first time in three years, it missed out on hosting the best picture winner [Moonlight, which went to Telluride].
Buzzed-about early awards contenders in this year’s 21-strong competition include Alexander Payne’s social satire Downsizing, starring Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig, Guillermo del Toro’s other-worldly...

Bachelor star Chris Soules did not attend the funeral of car crash victim Kenneth Mosher in Iowa on Monday.
Last week, the 35-year-old reality star was involved in a rear-ending incident which left 66-year-old tractor driver Mosher dead. After calling 911, Soules allegedly fled the scene, and was later arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Fatality Motor Vehicle Accident.

Soules’ lawyers have now asked for his case to be dismissed, claiming he offered “reasonable assistance” to Mosher.
Mosher’s funeral was held at the Geilenfeld Funeral Home in Oelwein, Iowa, where neighbor and long-time friend Phyllis Lentz estimated around 200 people attended the service.
“The pastor did a very good job,” Lentz told Et. “It was very nice. The family shared their memories of Kenny and it was a very beautiful service.”

Pierce Brosnan, who stars in AMC’s new Western series The Son, recently opened up about losing his wife and daughter to ovarian cancer. Look back on People’s 1992 cover story on the British actor, as he reflected on his wife’s memory four months after her death — and the profound impact she had on his life.

From the first time I saw it until this moment, two days before what might just be the most important, potentially resonant (for good and ill) American presidential election since the days of the Civil War, no other movie has expanded in my view more meaningfully, more ambiguously, with more fascination than has Robert Altman’s Nashville. We often hear of movies which “transcend” their genres, or their initial ambitions or intentions, and often built into that alleged transcendence is a condescension to said genre, or those ambitions or intentions, as if the roots were somehow corrupt or unworthy, in need of reconstruction. If the form of Nashville transcends anything, it’s the shape and scope of the multi-character drama as we’d come to know it in 1975, which was dominated at the time by disaster movies and their jam-packed casts filled with old Hollywood veterans and Oscar winners. But...

Mel Gibson is not the first person who comes to mind among Oscar contenders. But advance buzz is growing on World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge” (Lionsgate, November 4), his return to the director’s chair after “Apocalypto” 10 years ago.
See the new trailer here.
No matter how strong and resonant this true story turns out to be—it’s about a conscientious-objector medic (Andrew Garfield) who saves lives in the Battle of Okinawa without using a gun, and wins the Medal of Honor—the likelihood is slim of Gibson landing another Best Picture or Director nomination (he won both Oscars for “Braveheart” back in 1996, his only Oscar nominations). Too many Academy voters will never forgive his past behavior.
But if the movie, which will debut out of competition at the Venice Film Festival (August 31 – September 10), is well received by critics and audiences, other people involved could rise to Oscar contention — most notably,...

Is there a best picture winner in the bunch? The Venice Film Festival has unveiled its 2016 lineup, including both in competition and out of competition offerings, and with the festival’s strong track record of debuting recent best picture winners — from “Spotlight” to “Birdman” — there might be another big winner among the slate’s ranks.
As had been previously announced, the festival will open with Damien Chazelle’s “La La Land,” which will later hit Toronto (and, presumably, also Telluride). The festival will close with Antoine Fuqua’s “The Magnificent Seven,” which kicks off its own festival run days earlier, when it will open Tiff.

Yep, yep, yep, it’s called The Voice, and the voice should be the focus of our attention.
And yet, with 24 singers competing for only 12 slots in the Season 9 finals, shouldn’t a little salty hip action count for a few bonus points in a very close horse race (provided that said moving and grooving doesn’t throw a contestant off pitch)?

Chloe-Jasmine and Stevi Ritchie run into more problems in the Celebrity Big Brother house, as Chloe-Jasmine struggles to feel loved.
Things were already tense when Stevi made a joke at Chloe-Jasmine's expense during a Eamonn Holmes-hosted quiz earlier in the day. Not long afterwards, Stevi tells her he is going to sleep with Bobby Davro.
She replies: "I don't know why you say these things to make me feel upset and hurt. When you're nervous you don't even want to touch me."
Stevi, the old romantic, then tells her: "I just need a week apart from you, babe."
When he accuses her of making him feel insecure, she replies: "I'd have to be a twisted, f**ked-up girlfriend to go out my way to hurt you."
Later, Chloe-Jasmine worries he's no longer in love with her: "I feel a bit lost. You're being a bit odd with me,...

Janice Dickinson is in deep trouble with Big Brother after being given a final formal warning for her "aggressive" and "unacceptable" behaviour in the celebrity house.
The warning comes after an argument about the lack of hot water, which saw Janice get angry towards Austin Armacost.
Celebrity Big Brother: Where have we seen you before? Housemate lookalikes
Janice made a spitting gesture towards Austin - leading to her being called to the Diary Room - but the star denied that she actually spat at her fellow housemate.
She told Big Brother: "In the garden the fight was escalated... He started to follow me.
"I did not spit on him. I made the motion that I spat on him."
Janice was later called to the Diary Room and given her final warning, to which she said: "I am very sorry."

Tension rose again in the Big Brother house, after Cristian Mjc's nomination was officially announced.
Gathered on the sofas, everyone learnt that the Bunker housemates had put Cristian up for eviction alongside Harry Amelia Martin and Chloe Wilburn.
In highlights airing tonight (June 17), Helen Wood explains to Cristian: "We still think you're not offering much to the house."
Cristian argues that some of the others have been sucking up to the Bunker housemates, commenting: "I'm not here to bring entertainment to the house. It's to experience a journey for myself."
He adds that although Marc O'Neill says he does not like people sucking up, a few people - such as Nick Henderson and Simon Gross - have noticeably spent a lot of time with him now that he's back, despite previously bitching about him.
Brian Belo also reveals that he didn't want to nominate Cristian and that he was outnumbered.

In The Garden Of Garage: Hansen-Løve Recounts Brother’s Coming of Age During the Rise of House Music
Thanks to her brother Sven’s involvement in the popularization of French house music as a young DJ and club promoter throughout the 90s, director Mia Hansen-Løve grew up baptized in the propulsive wash of beats and samples that make up garage music. Her latest film, Eden, fictionalizes her brother’s Inside Llewyn Davis-esque music career with an authentic eye and ear for the electronic dance music scene as it metamorphosizes over the course of twenty rough and tumble years of spinning soulful dance tracks, snorting copious amounts of blow and trying desperately manage to both finances and romances.
Deeply personal in its portrayal of artistic passion and the intimate repercussions that come with banging one’s head against a metaphoric professional wall, Hansen-Løve’s film aches with nostalgia and heartbreak...

Perez Hilton has received a final formal warning for using inappropriate language towards Calum Best.
In tonight's show, Perez brings up a past incident where Calum turned off the bedroom lights. This causes Calum to respond with "be the d**k" before walking away.
Perez then shouts: "I will do, I'll be the huge d**k and I'll shove it up your arse!"
Calum is clearly angered by the comment and tells Perez not to speak to him like that, before leaving the bedroom and pacing.
Later, Calum goes to the Diary Room and tells Big Brother he is feeling "pretty riled up" by the comment. He is assured that Perez will be spoken to about the incident.
Calum adds that Perez is "lucky we're in this place. I'm not an angry person and like to think I've stayed cool and calm... this morning, I'm wondering what that dude's doing in this house.

As Lauren and Ricci continue their will they/won't they relationship, it seems they could have competition in the form of George Gilbey and Stephanie Pratt.

From Bram Stoker’s Dracula to Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend and beyond, different literary takes on vampires have made their marks, including The Delicate Dependency. Written by the late Michael Talbot and initially published in 1982, this highly regarded vampire novel is being released in a new edition by Valancourt Books, and they’ve provided us with an exclusive excerpt from the first chapter.
“They are cool to the touch and alluringly beautiful in their ageless youth. Their laughter seduces, their brilliance beguiles. They guard the secrets of science and history, and the answers to the mysteries of life and death lie within their vastly superior knowledge. In centuries past, they were known as the Illuminati. They are the vampire.
Dr. John Gladstone, a scientist in Victorian London, is thrust into their world after his carriage runs over a young man of angelic beauty named Niccolo. When Niccolo kidnaps Gladstone’s child and vanishes,...

Celebrity Big Brother housemates Luisa Zissman and Lionel Blair have had an explosive argument.
The row, in which Lionel called Luisa a "bitch", erupted after he discovered that she had broken a house rule by using mascara.
The pair then started fighting over whether Lionel had told the Apprentice star to go and get some chocolates that were later eaten.
"You told me to get the chocolates," she said. "I just went to get the champagne. So don't act all innocent and bitch about it."
He retorted: "You are being loudmouthed and think you can do what you like. But you can't."
The argument then escalated, with Dappy attempting to intervene and Luisa shouting: "Everyone will see it back. You said to me, 'Get the chocolates, get the chocolates'."
Lionel then repeatedly said: "Am I your boss? Am I your boss now?" before adding: "You are just a selfish bitch!

Yusef Lateef, who died on Monday after a bout with prostate cancer, was a devout Muslim who did not like his music to be called jazz because of the supposed indecent origins and connotations of the word (although those origins are still debated). He preferred the self-coined phrase "autophysiopsychic music." Furthermore, his music encompassed an impressively broad range of styles, and the only Grammy he won was in the New Age category -- for a recording of a symphony. Think about those things amid the flood of Lateef obituaries with "jazz" in the headline.
That said, certainly Lateef's own musical origins indisputably revolved around jazz. Growing up in Detroit, a highly fertile musical environment in the 1930s and beyond, Lateef got his first instrument, an $80 Martin alto sax, at age 18. Within a year he was on the road with the 13 Spirits of Swing (arrangements by Milt Buckner).

When it comes to shaping up for her latest role, Viola Davis is turning to one of the hottest bodies in Hollywood for inspiration: Hugh Jackman. The actress says she's following the so-called "Wolverine diet" to play Susie Brown in the upcoming James Brown biopic, Get on Up. "[I'm] losing a little weight. When I say 'a little,' I mean 'a little,' " she told People Saturday at the Los Angeles Hammer Museum's 11th Annual Gala In The Garden. "I'm not a weight girl much." Jackman's diet for the Marvel Comics franchise calls for limiting food intake to a period...

We may have lamented the lull in the middle of Scandal season 2, but I'm happy to report that after the past couple weeks this Shondaland drama is as on fire as ever.
If the first half of this season was dedicated to Defiance, "Snake in the Garden" just renamed the back half of the season "Albatross." Tonight was a return to form for this fast-talking cast of characters and had all of the the spark of Scandal season 1.
To discuss the myriad of stories presented tonight most thoroughly, we'll start running things down with our own Olivia Pope.
Olivia might deserve to be nominated for sainthood after not only helping Hollis Doyle but also defending him to her team.
They're under no obligation to help those who walk through their door and are free to refuse anyone at any time. Olivia, however, doesn't see it that way. Tonight she saw...

Opening to the hymn "Blessed Assurance" and closing to "In the Garden," writer/director Robert Benton sets Places in the Heart firmly in the Bible Belt. The 1984 movie is based, and was filmed in, Benton's hometown of Waxahachie, Texas. The year is 1935 and the small town is muddling through the Depression.
Sally Field centers the film as Edna Spalding, a mother trying to hold on to her home after her sheriff husband is unexpectedly killed. In the first few minutes of the film, he is accidentally shot by a drunk young man on the train tracks. The young man is black in the Jim Crow-era South, and the repercussions of his actions are horrific. Benton chooses to parallel the deaths and funerals of the two men so we can compare, contrast and think on them.
Edna seems uncertain of her identity, role and future now that her husband is gone.

Last year it was reported that Tom Hanks and his producing partner Gary Goetsman would be adapting the Erik Larson novel, In the Garden of the Beasts, for the big screen. Hanks would take on the lead role in the film, and now there's a new report from Deadline saying that The Artist director Michel Hazanavicius is currently in talks to helm, and Natalie Portman could end up playing Hanks' daughter in the story.
The film is set during Hitler’s rise to power. It's based on the true story of William Dodd, "the United States' reluctant and mild-mannered ambassador to Berlin in 1933, and his daughter Martha, a vivacious socialite who had romantic affairs with a Gestapo official and a Soviet spy. Dodd and his family at first naively navigated life in Nazi Germany (Dodd’s daughter was excited when Hitler kissed her hand) but they slowly gained awareness of the mounting brutality around them.

Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman gained the movie rights from Universal for Erik Larson's best-selling novel, In the Garden of Beasts. It is to be produced by their company, Playtone, which the two created in 1996 creating hits such as The Green Mile and Catch Me If You Can. Being no stranger to historical dramas, there is talk that Hanks may take the starring roll as well.
In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler’s Berlin is a story about pre-w.W. II Nazi Germany told through William Dodd, the U.S. ambassador to Berlin, and his socialite daughter in 1933. Larson's book was published in May 2011 and quickly became critically acclaimed.

The best-selling author of Devil in the White City documents the efforts of William E. Okay, Tom Hanks isn't actually getting into a time machine and travelling back to the 1940 when WWII was in raging in Europe. Althought the prolific actor is planning to star in Erik Larson's nonfiction bestseller In the Garden of Beasts, which recently was optioned by Universal.

After a lack-luster romcom, Tom Hanks is back and just where we like him -- in Nazi Germany.
Hanks and Gary Goetzman will be producing Erik Larson's nonfiction bestseller "In the Garden of Beasts," but Hanks also has his eye on the lead role, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Larson's book, whose full title is "In the Garden of Beasts: Love, Terror and an American Family in Hitler's Berlin," tells the true story of William Dodd, a mild-mannered Us ambassador sent to Berlin in 1933 along with his daughter Marth, a lively socialite who finds herself entangled in love affairs with a Gestapo official and a Soviet spy. At first, the pair is ignorant to the ugliness around them but slowly realizes they're in the midst of a mounting genocide.
This move expands Hanks' ever-impressive World War II/ historical oeuvre. He will next been seen in another book adaptation, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

If there are two things Tom Hanks loves, it's World War II and the moon. The actor has devoted much of his time to both of them, starring in films about them, but also producing or narrating other features focusing on them, and now that trend continues. Hanks has just partnered with Universal to option WWII novel, whose full title is The Garden Of Beasts: Love, Terror And An American Family In Hitler's Berlin. As that won't fit on many posters, it will probably be shortened to In The Garden...
