Global Screen, the Munich-based international sales outfit, has boarded worldwide sales on “The Trek,” the upcoming first feature from leading South African cinematographer and director Meekaaeel Adam. The film is a horror-Western, in which starvation, suspicion and madness plague a family as they cross the Kalahari Desert under the eyes of primeval spirits.
“The Trek” is set in 1846, when a Dutch-Afrikaans family and their British travel companion set off on a challenging journey through the Kalahari Desert. Along the way, they meet Atshumao, a stoic man of the Khoen people, one of Southern Africa’s original indigenous, nomadic population groups.
Despite Atshumao’s warning, the group attempts a shortcut through the unforgiving landscape, unaware that this will lead them to cross paths with two ancestral spirits – who will settle a centuries-old dispute by betting on the family’s lives. The group of travelers is soon plagued by misfortune, tragedy, thirst,...

The Killing star Sofie Gråbøl has reflected on how her Danish breakout series redefined “national and linguistic borders” when it came to TV viewing.
Gråbøl spoke with Deadline in the midst of her time leading the Canneseries jury, for which she is judging shows from the likes of China, Brazil and Sweden.
The Killing, which was a smash hit both locally in Denmark and around the world, airing for three seasons between 2007 and 2012 and spawning a U.S. remake, “was a defining moment and a visceral way of showing how TV series can be accessible for all of us,” she said.
“It was something we couldn’t imagine [at the time],” added Gråbøl. “That something so local from this small country could have such interest across the border. We had been so used to importing culture from other countries but suddenly those national and linguistic borders weren’t defined anymore.”

Highly active Copenhagen-based sales outfit REinvent has acquired rights to the Danish pic “Rome,” officially selected as the Göteborg Film Festival’s closing movie.
The life-affirming romantic drama marks the sophomore feature from established Danish choreographer Niclas Bendixen, behind Mads Mikkelsen’s famous dance scene in the Oscar-winning “Another Round.” Toplining the cast are Rolf Lassgård (“A Man Called Ove”), Bodil Jørgensen (“The Kingdom”), and Kristian Halken (“A Perfectly Normal Family”), who shares the writing credits with Bendixen and Christian Torpe (“Silent Heart”).
“‘Rome’ stands out as a heart-warming film which makes you think about life, love and values. We are proud to represent and showcase ‘Rome’ to an international audience in Göteborg. I am confident that the film will find a home in the hearts of distributors in countries worldwide,” said Helene Aurø, REinvent’s sales and marketing director.

The 61st New York Film Festival opens Friday on a high note, with advance sales of passes and tickets at kickoff up 50% from last year, which was a record-breaking fest. It’s also a day of heavy rains and flooding in New York City.
“We have never seen [sales] numbers like this,” said artistic director Dennis Lim as the curtain is still planning to rise tonight at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall with Todd Haynes’ May December, followed by two weeks and 111 films from 45 countries.
The opening comes on a day where many subway lines are shuttered and NYC Mayor Eric Adams has declared a state of emergency, urging New Yorkers not to travel if possible. NYFF organizers says no changes so far to the opening-night schedule.
Staffers and talent arriving for a May December press conference reported that taxis were even more scarce than usual amid the rainfall.

As we creep towards summer, Netflix has a hot new list of fresh content, including the final season of “Never Have I Ever,” the sophomore season of ‘Human Resources” and the highly anticipated sixth season of “Black Mirror.”
Kicking off the start of the month on mega streamer are lots of family-friendly goodies like both “Nanny McPhee” and “Nanny McPhee Returns,” “Kicking and Screaming,” “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and the “Angry Birds Movie.” But the adults won’t be left out of the conversation, as more mature flicks and series like “Jarhead,” “Funny People” and “We’re the Millers” are also hitting the platform this month.
And it wouldn’t be Netflix without its originals. “Take Care of Maya,” “Extraction 2” and the Sarah Snook-led “Run Rabit Run” will land on the site in June. And even if this isn’t enough to get you watching, Netflix will be streaming its Tudum festival on Saturday,...

Lars von Trier founded the Dogme 95 movement alongside Thomas Vinterberg in the 1990s as a stripped-down, chaste approach to filmmaking — chaste, at least, on visual terms, as there is never anything chaste about a movie from the director of “Breaking the Waves,” “Antichrist,” and “The House That Jack Built.”
But in reality, von Trier only actually made one movie that adhered to Dogme 95’s criteria: including all shooting done on location, no props or sets brought in, diegetic sound and natural light only, and no credits for the filmmaker. That film was 1998’s Danish comedy-drama “The Idiots,” which upon release at the Cannes Film Festival provoked a firestorm of fiercely divided reactions for its fictionalized treatment of disability. Now, independent film distributor and streaming platform Mubi will re-release the film, restored and uncut, on June 16 theatrically at the Metrograph before it hits streaming on July 7. Netflix gained a new competitor last month (sort of) when HBO Max and Discovery+ combined forces to create the confusingly-named Max. With its list of new releases for June 2023, however, Netflix doesn’t have too much to worry about.
This month is filled with some major Netflix original titles, not the least of which is The Witcher season 3 volume 1 on June 29. Though star Henry Cavill is set to leave the Polish folklore/video game adaptation in season 4, he remains very much entrenched as the titular Witcher in this next go-around. Other big TV hits include Manifest season 4 part 2 (June 2), Big Mouth spinoff Human Resources season 2 (June 9), and animated King Kong series Skull Island (June 22). That’s not even to mention the return of Black Mirror season 6. That still has yet to receive a release date but we have no doubt it will be properly epic once it arrives.

Plot: A CIA contractor (Gerard Butler) who just sabotaged an Iranian Nuclear Power Plant finds his cover blown by a whistleblower journalist. On the run, he finds himself being hunted, along with his Afghan interpreter (Navid Negahban), through hostile territory by Iranian Intelligence, the Taliban and Pakistan intelligence.
Review: Many will compare Ric Roman Waugh’s Kandahar with Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant. After all, both are about Americans being hunted in Afghanistan along with their interpreters, but if you ignore how similar the premises may be, they’re actually quite different. Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant was a (very good) war film, while Kandahar is more of a straightforward action flick. It’s a very tight little thriller offering further evidence that Gerard Butler makes the best mid-level action movies in the business, especially when he works with Ric Roman Waugh, arguably his best director.

Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are used to doing fight scenes and physical stunts in movies. But when it came to shooting Daredevil, Affleck asserted that Garner definitely had the edge on him.
Jennifer Garner put Ben Affleck to shame with their ‘Daredevil’ fight scenes Ben Affleck | Frederic J. Brown/Getty Images
Affleck and Garner both played superhero Daredevil and assassin Elektra in the 2003 superhero feature named after Affleck’s Marvel superhero. Being a superhero movie, the film required the pair to engage in more than a few fight scenes.
Whereas Affleck wasn’t too experienced in that department, Garner already had an advantage as she spent years choreographing fights on Alias. So when it came time for the two to face each other on camera, Garner may have had an easier time.
“Jennifer’s great, she’s fabulous,” Affleck once told MTV News. “She’s actually better at [the fighting] than I am.

This article contains spoilers for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.
Despite pre-release speculation, Princess Zelda is not playable in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. That news will undoubtedly come as a disappointment to some fans. After all, a series of rumors and fan theories strongly suggested that Tears of the Kingdom would finally give Zelda the playable adventure that she very much deserves. Instead, it appears that you’ll still have to rely on games of…mixed quality if you want to play as the princess.
Don’t be too discouraged, though. Tears of the Kingdom may not let you play as Zelda, but she’s still the best character in the game.
Mind you, it’s possible to play (and beat) Tears of the Kingdom while only seeing Princess Zelda a handful of times. She and Link play a prominent part in the game’s opening cutscene,...

Few European arthouse-crossover film sales agents have better weathered the ebb and flow of international market dynamics than Madrid’s Latido Films, which turns 20 in 2023.
Proof of that came at April’s Platino Awards, where Latido scored six statuettes, split between an acting double for Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s “Lullaby” and four for Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s “The Beasts,” which has already swept Spain’s Goya Awards and scored a French Cesar for foreign film.
Scoring €6.8 million ($7.5 million) in Spain, and 327,000 admissions in France, “The Beasts” also rates as one of the top-performing recent Spanish-language movies.
If Latido has survived for so long, insists director general Antonio Saura, it’s because of a core strategy of “working with talent, our search for talent.” Beyond that, other keys have been “collaboration with production companies that understand long-term relationships, and well-established relationships with clients.”

We’re deep into the dog days of summer, but Netflix’s list of new releases for August 2021 feels like fall.
That is to say that Netflix has some really good library TV titles this month that harken back to the glory days of the fall TV network calendar. August 1 sees the arrival of two of the best NBC shows of all time: Tina Fey comedy 30 Rock, and life-affirming (American) football drama Friday Night Lights. If you’ve not seen either, catch up with them both. That’s an order.

Brand New Cherry Flavor looks like one of the wildest shows of the year -- and that's a good thing.
Netflix on Friday dropped the full-length trailer.
I'm still trying to wrap my head around what went down because of how out there it was, but it looks exciting.
"Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) comes to LA dead set on directing her first movie," reads the logline.
"But when she trusts the wrong person and gets stabbed in the back, everything goes sideways, and a dream project turns into a nightmare," it continues.
"This particular nightmare has zombies, hit men, supernatural kittens, and a mysterious tattoo artist who likes to put curses on people."
"And Lisa’s going to have to figure out some secrets from her own past in order to get out alive."
Sounds like a nightmare, right?

It’s a day of yes for Jennifer Garner and Netflix: As part of a new deal with the streamer, Garner will develop a number of new movies for her to produce and star in — and one of them is a sequel to “Yes Day.”
The family comedy premiered on Netflix in March, and according to the company, it’s Netflix’s biggest kids and family movie to date, and was seen in 62 million households. In it, Garner and Édgar Ramírez play parents caught in a cycle of “no” with their three kids until they decide to say yes to everything (within certain limitations). The concept of “Yes Day” was based on something Garner would do with her kids from the children’s book of the same name by Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

Lars von Trier is a filmmaker for whom each day probably feels like another installment in a long, slow slog toward the end of the world. Therefore, his recent 65th birthday on April 30 might not feel like something to celebrate. But for better and oftentimes for much, much worse, the most dour Dane of all time has served up a catalogue of extraordinary, shocking, and bracing films spanning more than half his life.
The controversy-courting filmmaker is shameless about his signature abrasiveness, and it tends to plop him into an uneasy camp: from walking himself straight into becoming “persona non grata” at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival with his comments about understanding Hitler, to Björk swearing off acting following a grueling experience making “Dancer in the Dark.” He may be another in a long line of toxic male directors, but his body of work has produced some of the best performances ever put to film.

Oscar-nominated Danish director Thomas Vinterberg, whose latest movie “Another Round” is nominated for a pair of Oscars and just won a BAFTA award, is re-teaming with Danish production outfit Zentropa on his TV drama debut, “Families Like Ours.”

If you thought revivals of ’80s and ’90s properties only applied to big-budget Hollywood productions, think again. Almost like he was taking a cue from “Twin Peaks: The Return,” Lars von Trier will be returning to an earlier period in his career and make a third and final season to his hospital drama “The Kingdom.”
Since he shocked Cannes audiences with his serial killer drama “The House That Jack Built” in 2018, the director had not announced a new project, until now.

World-beating lifeline: Deadline hears that other nations look on enviously at the UK’s £500M ($665M) coronavirus production insurance scheme, so it’s little wonder that British producers want more of a good thing. Led by Pact CEO John McVay, the film and TV industry is in talks with the government to extend the initiative so that shoots are covered up until June next year, rather than the current cut off of February. Given how receptive ministers have been so far, it will be a surprise if the discussions are not successful.

Lars von Trier has not officially announced a new project since he shocked Cannes again (again) with 2018’s serial-killer saga “The House That Jack Built.” For his next project, as announced by Zentropa Productions on Thursday, von Trier will be returning to the cult hospital series that established his TV presence in the mid-1990s, “The Kingdom.” Set in the neurosurgical ward of a Copenhagan hospital, the series, now dubbed “The Kingdom Exodus,” will return for a third and final season in 2022. Expected to shoot next year, the new revamp of “The Kingdom” will consist of five hour-long episodes. Check out videos teasing the return below.
Producers say the new “Kingdom” will contain a mix of new and old characters from the original, which followed the idiosyncratic staff of the Danish hospital and their encounters with the supernatural and unexplainable. A third season of the show, which ended in 1997, was...

Lars von Trier is finally bringing the story of “The Kingdom” to a close with a third and final season for his cult ’90s series.
Titled “The Kingdom Exodus,” the Zentropa-produced final installment will begin shooting next year, TrustNordisk told TheWrap Thursday. The season will consist of five episodes, around 60 minutes apiece, and is expected to premiere in 2022.
The cast for the final season of the Danish series has yet to be announced, but TrustNordisk says “it will be a mixture of well-known characters from earlier seasons as well as new characters.”
Here’s the official description for “The Kingdom Exodus,” which von Trier is writing with Niels Vørsel: “What exactly will transpire in the final showdown between good and evil is still a well-kept secret, but one thing is for sure: The old feud between the Swedes and the Danes at the hospital is still fiery, and...

Following his serial killer drama The House That Jack Built, Lars von Trier has now found his next directorial project and it’s one that will see him returning to a period from earlier in his career. The director will be shooting a third and final season of The Kingdom, his TV show that aired two seasons totaling eight episodes between 1994-1997.
Deadline reports this new season, titled The Kingdom Exodus, will run five episodes, shooting next year. Scripted by von Trier and returning collaborator Niels Vørsel, with all five episodes directed by von Trier, the original series was set in the neurosurgical ward of a Copenhagen hospital.
The third season, which will feature “hospitals, horror, and humor,” was originally planned to happen in the 1990s but after actors Ernst-Hugo Järegård and Kirsten Rolffes passed away, von Trier shelved it and is now returning with a mix of original characters and new additions.
