The Mexican Mistake or (How not to make a movie)
transplant0318 November 2004
I just saw this film, and it is the worst movie I have ever seen. There were so many glaring problems with the story and the execution of film makers in general that it made me laugh. (It's supposed to be a "hard hitting" drama)

The sound design and ADR is absolutely atrocious, during one scene "Jose" talks for about 10 seconds walking behind some bushes and you can clearly see how bad the sync is. It is a terrible sound mix and bad sound FX, at one point you can see the actors firing guns and they are obviously making the fake guns move like there is some force behind them, like one might do at the age of 9 or 10 years old playing cowboys and Indians. The gun sparks themselves were nothing more than bad after effects that really topped off the cheesy effect.

Overall the acting is bad with a few exceptions "Rosa" was solid, although the sound design took away from anything good an actor might have done so it's hard to judge. "Jose" had some OK moments but over all was not very good. "Joker" was a terrible actor really stiff and tried to hard to be the "bad guy".

The direction and camera work left nothing to be desired and it seemed what ever the script had to offer these actors was not brought out on the screen. Lack of film knowledge, lighting, camera moves, and production value made this film a laughable example of how not to make a movie.

Jesus talks to a gang-banger while in Jail, that's original!
susanalopez12349 February 2005
I was touched by the cell-mate of Jose, Jesus. He transforms Jose from a violent gang-banger into a decent man. His words really sounded like a modern day Jesus. It made me really think of how many times we have help from above and we do not even realize it. To see a person so kind and so wise, using everyday language to influence the devious mind of a teenager was very refreshing. Later on when Jose is released from Jail, Jesus stays helping another gang member. It was then that I realized Jesus did not really exist, at least not as an official prisoner. That blew me away! I hope teenagers watch this story. It would teach them to change their ways in a very original way.

A good film. Two thumbs up!

Even though I almost never write reviews, I had to do it this time. I liked this movie too much to let that person who does not even dare to provide his name be taken seriously by anyone. First of all, it sounds like he has a personal vendetta against the production company of the film. Man if you didn't get the sound job, get over it. The sound was pretty decent. Okay not maybe like in your blockbuster Hollywood films that have a million sound effects, but I could hear everything crystal clear. Please who in the world knows what ADR is, that is where this person gives himself away. I sure did not know! So if he knows, and was paying attention to that so much, he certainly was not a regular person like me, but someone angry because maybe he didn't get hired for this film. Grow up! This film was great. Now let me not waste more time on that looser, and go back to what is worth saying. East LA King presents a positive outlook on life to men and women who have been involved with gangs. I showed it to my kids, because I wasn't so good in my younger years. Now I am different. I found God and I want my kids to do the same. I think East La King helped me to present with images what I wanted to say to my kids. This film should be presented in schools. Definitely Two thumbs up!

I was touched by it.

I personally liked this movie very much because it shows how we all pay a price for whatever we do in this lifetime. In this case the father pays the price of all the bad things he did in his younger years through his son who becomes just like him. I agree that it is not your typical violent gang movie, but that is exactly what I like about it, the fact that it explores the world of a person who is in a gang and later decides to straighten his life. It concentrates on how that person changes his life around first in prison and later in his life. Okay maybe not everyone who comes out of prison will become a better human being when they come out, but I think it was brilliant to put a Jesus like character in the same cell as the lead character. Technically speaking the film was okay, not Hollywood okay, for that it would have needed a bigger budget, but overall I thought it was okay. If you are after big special effects, this is not the film, but if you want to see a transforming movie, I recommend it!
