Harry Dean Stanton stole more scenes than most other actors even appeared in. Over his six-decade career, the late, great actor managed the improbable feat of being as recognizable from his highbrow fare (like “Paris, Texas”) as he was from his high-school movie (“Pretty in Pink”) — and that was just in the mid-‘80s.
Stanton also worked with David Lynch, Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, John Carpenter, and Monte Hellman, among many others; he left his indelible mark on all their movies, as he did on those who watched them. Here are some of our favorites.

The Pirates Of The Caribbean movies have not been easy films to make....
As Michael Bolton once belted out: “This is the tale of Captain Jack Sparrow.” The Pirates Of The Caribbean film was a surprise sleeper hit in 2003, astounding the higher-ups at Disney who had long been sceptical of how a pirate movie, based on a ride at Disneyland, would appeal to audiences.
Off the back of this success, the sequels only got more ambitious and expensive in scale, with their use of practical effects and convoluted character dynamics serving to complicate the adventure format, with mixed results. It shouldn't shock you then, to hear that each of the movies released so far had some serious behind-the-scenes battles to make them shipshape.
The fifth and apparently final instalment, Salazar's Revenge (or Dead Men Tell No Tales), has had some very public battles before it has even been released,...

46 years ago today, history was made on an episode of “The Tonight Show.” Novelty singer Tiny Tim — known for his ukulele playing and falsetto voice — married Miss Vicki on Johnny Carson’s talk show. It was the most-watched episode of Carson’s “Tonight Show” until his finale. Before televised celebrity weddings became a common occurrence, this was a wholly new spectacle. 45 million viewers tuned in for the event. (Compare that to a meager 4 million viewers watching Kim Kardashian’s much-publicized 2011 wedding to Kris Humphries.) Other notable December 17 happenings in pop culture history: • 1965: Judy Garland and The Supremes became first artists to perform at the Astrodome in Houston, Tex. • 1971: “Diamonds Are Forever,” the seventh Eon Productions James Bond film, opened in U.S. theaters. • 1976: “Freaky Friday,” starring Jodie Foster and Barbara Harris, had its theatrical release. The remake of “King Kong,” starring Jessica Lange in her first film role,...

It’s been a couple months since the last edition of What’s Up Doc? placed Michael Moore’s surprise world premiere of Where To Invade Next at the top of this list and in the meantime much shuffling has taken place and much time has been spent on various new endeavors (namely my Buffalo-based film series, Cultivate Cinema Circle). Finally taking its rightful place at the top, D.A. Pennebaker and Chris Hagedus’ Unlocking the Cage is in the midst of being scored by composer James Lavino, according to Lavino’s own personal site. Though the project has been taking shape at its own leisurely pace, I’d expect to see the film making its festival debut in early 2016.

Greek helmer Yorgos Lanthimos’ purest and painful reminder that love reigns is measuring off against Justin Kurzel’s paranoia bliss and Andrew Haigh’s in it for the long term portrait received the most nominations for the upcoming 2015 British Independent Film Awards. Mysteriously, Rachel Weisz failed to nab a nom in the Best Actress category, but The Lobster has a wide-spread reach in all major categories with seven nominations. 45 Years, the favorite in both acting categories and Macbeth are one shy with six noms apiece. Apart from the Best Picture category, we’re keeping tabs for a surprise win in the Best Screenplay and the Best Supporting Actor race should be a hoot as both Gleesons in Brendan and Domhnall will be competing against each other. The award show technically kicks off award season on December 6th.

While we’ll be hearing about the Oscar race ad nauseam for the next many months, there are a few awards ceremony that actually highlight films that might slip under the radar. Like the recently unveiled Gotham award nominations, the British Independent Film Awards do a splendid job of taking a look at some of the year’s overlooked films, and today brings their nominations.
Topping the list is Yorgos Lanthimos‘ The Lobster (which we quite liked at Cannes, and will be released next spring in the U.S.), earning seven nominations, including Best Film and Director. Also in the same major categories, but earning six overall, were 45 Years and Macbeth, which we also praised, and will arrive in the U.S next month. Notably, the documentary Amy snuck into the Best Film category, proving just how much a hit it was in the U.K. as well.

It’s been a surprisingly interesting month of moving and shaking in terms of doc development. Just a month after making his first public funding pitch at Toronto’s Hot Docs Forum, legendary doc filmmaker Frederick Wiseman took to Kickstarter to help cover the remaining expenses for his 40th feature film In Jackson Heights (see the film’s first trailer below). Unrelentingly rigorous in his determination to capture the American institutional landscape on film, his latest continues down this thematic rabbit hole, taking on the immensely diverse New York City neighborhood of Jackson Heights as his latest subject. According to the Kickstarter page, Wiseman is currently editing the 120 hours of rushes he shot with hopes of having the film ready for a fall festival premiere (my guess would be Tiff, where both National Gallery and At Berkeley made their North American debut), though he’s currently quite a ways away from his $75,000 goal.

Well folks, after a rather long and brutal winter (at least for me here in Buffalo), we are finally heading into the wonderful warmth of summer, but with that blast of sunshine and steamy humidity comes the mid-year drought of major film fests. After the Sheffield Doc/Fest concludes on June 10th and AFI Docs wraps on June 21st, we likely won’t see any major influx in our charts until Locarno, Venice, Telluride and Tiff announce their line-ups in rapid succession. In the meantime, we can look forward to the intriguing onslaught of films making their debut in Sheffield, including Brian Hill’s intriguing examination of Sweden’s most notorious serial killer, The Confessions of Thomas Quick, and Sean McAllister’s film for which he himself was jailed in the process of making, A Syrian Love Story, the only two films world premiering in the festival’s main competition.

It should come as no surprise that Cannes Film Festival will play host to Kent Jones’s doc on the touchstone of filmmaking interview tomes, Hitchcock/Truffaut (see photo above). The film has been floating near the top of this list since it was announced last year as in development, while Jones himself has a history with the festival, having co-written both Arnaud Desplechin’s Jimmy P. and Martin Scorsese’s My Voyage To Italy, both of which premiered in Cannes. The film is scheduled to screen as part of the Cannes Classics sidebar alongside the likes of Stig Björkman’s Ingrid Bergman, in Her Own Words, which will play as part of the festival’s tribute to the late starlet, and Gabriel Clarke and John McKenna’s Steve McQueen: The Man & Le Mans (see trailer below). Now that the busy winter fest schedule of Sundance, Rotterdam and the Berlinale has concluded, we’ve now got our eyes on the likes of True/False and SXSW. While, True/False does not specialize in attention grabbing world premieres, it does provide a late winter haven for cream of the crop non-fiction fare from all the previously mentioned fests and a selection of overlooked genre blending films presented in a down home setting. This year will mark my first trip to the Columbia, Missouri based fest, where I hope to catch a little of everything, from their hush-hush secret screenings, to selections from their Neither/Nor series, this year featuring chimeric Polish cinema of decades past, to a spotlight of Adam Curtis’s incisive oeuvre. But truth be told, it is SXSW, with its slew of high profile world premieres being announced, such as Alex Gibney’s Steve Jobs...

This adaptation of a Tracy Letts play desperately wants some awards, but if Mark has anything to do with it, it won't get them...
In the age of torrents, the screener discs that are sent out to critics and members of awards voting bodies during Oscar season have a tendency to turn up online. If you ever see a dodgy copy of one of these screeners, you'll presumably have your viewing experience briefly interrupted, every now and then, by an on-screen graphic with either a copyright notice or a “For Your Consideration” banner.
I saw August: Osage County in the cinema, upon its UK release date this weekend. Cinema releases are free of such digital graphics, but trust me - this is a film that has got “For Your Consideration” written all over it, and in no good way.

Outstanding Drama Series
Breaking Bad
Downton Abbey
Boardwalk Empire
Homeland
Mad Men
Game of Thrones
Reaction: What’s to debate here? All deserve it to some degree. Even in a down season, Downton Abbey is still phenomenal television, even if it’s not your cup of tea. My only gripe is that last year Abbey was considered a Miniseries and now they take the place of an equally deserving show. Nothing is budging Breaking Bad or Mad Men, and there’s no one else more thrilled to see Homeland and Game of Thrones included. Boardwalk Empire belongs too, but again, Sons of Anarchy will sadly never be in the Emmy conversation for whatever reason even though this past season wasn’t its most consistent. There were series...

Community, Season 3, Episode 19, “Curriculum Unavailable”
Written by Adam Countee
Directed by Adam Davidson
Airs Thursdays at 8pm Et on NBC
“Curriculum Unavailable” draws pretty heavily on last year’s “Paradigms of Human Memory” in that it functions as a clip-show of sorts, consisting of all-new material. With John Hodgman’s inspired guest turn as a faux-psychiatrist, it initially appears the show is going to seriously address Abed’s dysfunction (or at least more seriously than they did in “Virtual Systems Analysis.”) The final third of this season has been quite dark by Community standards but apparently Dan Harmon isn’t willing to go that dark as it quickly becomes clear that Abed is the one that knows what’s going on.
The show nicely utilizes the flashback structure. Instead of the rapid-fire barrage of jokes in “Paradigms” it’s used to tease out revelations in the characters until they catch...

Westwood - The master of sensual European cinema golden years have a tint of blue. UCLA just hosted retrospective of Radley Metzger’s films. His most important films are being released on Blu-ray. He’s about to take the director’s chair as he approaches 83.
His masterwork Camille 2000 was just released Blu-ray with an extended version from Cult Epics. The 1969 update of Dumas’ The Lady of the Camellias takes place in an esoteric Italy. The restored high definition transfer gives a detailed look at that magical time. The Party Favors had a chance to chat with Radley Metzger about the release.

Radley is a true independent filmmaker. He owns the rights to his films instead of selling them off to distributor. He’s not at the mercy of an indifferent studio executive to keep his cinematic legacy available. The first question had to be...

This past week, Film Score Monthly has released a new soundtrack album for Terrence Malick’s 1978 drama Days of Heaven. The film’s Academy Award-nominated score is composed by Ennio Morricone. The album comes in a 2Cd set and includes the 1978 soundtrack album including most of Morricone’s major themes and some music not heard in the picture, as well as the composer’s cues as heard in the final film on one disc. The second disc presents an extended, freestanding program of most of Morricone’s score as recorded. For audio clips and more information, visit Film Score Monthly’s album page. Days of Heaven starring Richard Gere, Sam Shepard and Brooke Adams centers on a hot-tempered farm laborer who convinces the woman he loves to marry their rich but dying boss so that they can have a claim to his fortune. The movie was nominated for four Academy...

Asif Kapadia's biopic of Formula One driver Ayrton Senna has become an unexpected hit. So how did this little-known Hackney director end up making it?
Asif Kapadia sips his latte and glances at the Tour de France on the TV in Bar Italia in Soho. We've been discussing Senna, his biopic about the tragic Brazilian Formula One motor racing star. It's quietly broken box office records to become the surprise hit of the summer. Now the picture is poised for a Us release that might well put it in the frame for an Oscar.
The 39-year-old Hackney-born director's film powered away from an unpromising position on the starting grid. It grossed £375,000 on its first weekend, three times more than Kevin Macdonald's 2005 documentary about two British mountaineers' near-death experience in the Andes, Touching the Void. After that impressive start, Kapadia's film looks set to become one of the most...

We're less than two weeks away from the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, and convention organizers have finally released the schedule for the first day of programing. You can find the full schedule on comic-con.org [1], or after the jump I've listed the film and television highlights, which includes the Masters of the Web panel which I've been invited to be a panelist on (In full disclosure, I've been asked to be on this panel for a few years now, but I've only just recently gotten over my fear of speaking in front of large audiences). It should be a fun panel, and I hear they will be giving away some really cool prizes as well. So if you were following my test last week to release the Disc 2 before the main episode, you’ll notice that this week I quickly reverted to our old way of doing things. I just found that putting out a Disc 2 before the Disc 1 caused a minor tear in the space time continuum, and I can’t have that on my conscience again. This week we continue our preview of this week’s new DVD and Blu-ray releases, including things like Tron, Taxi Driver, and Batman Beyond The Return Of The Joker, as well as a look at what else has been on our screens.
Disc 2 episodes are bonus/supplement episodes of The CriterionCast. Ryan Gallagher, James McCormick, and Travis George chat about movies and movie experiences. “On The Screen” is where they discuss anything and everything that has been on their screens in the week. This is what they recommend to you,...

Devastatingly talented and really, really ridiculously good-looking, Ayrton Senna was motor-racing's matinee idol and arguably the greatest Formula One driver ever to grace the sport. He was also a tragic figure who met with an untimely end during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. He remains the last F1 driver to die behind the wheel and retains an aura of mystique that filmmaker Asif Kapadia delves into in his acclaimed documentary Senna. The film, which debuts its new trailer, tells the Brazilian's story. It flaunts his awesome feats of speed; daredevil driving that often put him at odds with his more cautious rival and McLaren-Honda teammate, Alain Prost. Their's was a rivalry for the ages, like Borg versus McEnroe, Fischer versus Spassky, and Roy Keane versus everyone else. brightcove.createExperiences(); The doc sees Kapadia, best known for two commendable features, Far North and The Warrior, as well as one ropey one,...

There's some poetic justice in the fact that it takes at least a half-hour, if at all, into "Senna" to realize director Asif Kapadia is only going to use archival footage to tell the story of the legendary Formula One driver since of course Ayrton Senna's own feats on the racetrack were always best appreciated when he was miles ahead. It's one of the many ways that the doc is modeled after Senna's approach to driving -- Kapadia's film is relentless, occasionally idiosyncratic and bound to be wildly popular as it commemorates one of Brazil's most celebrated exports.
However, "Senna" is an interesting biography not only because it limits itself to 15,000 hours of video already on record with interviews sporadically used as voiceover throughout, but also since it is far less about the man than the driver, which expands its entertainment value considerably while marginalizing in some sense...

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? The Return of the Moonwalker Trailer Note: I can’t explicitly endorse getting high by way of huffing some rubber cement but, if you happen...

It’s always sad when an older show goes to become a pop-culture touchstone for countless shows that followed (like the spin-off The Bionic Woman or even children’s cartoon Inspector Gadget), yet doesn’t have the quality to endure the aging process and stand up to future scrutiny. The Six Million Dollar Man has the iconic “We can rebuild him line” and that signature sound accompaniment for when leaping an incredible distance, but the storylines never really fleshed out to be too deep or intricately plotted. Expectations for action/spy adventure serials had to meet a lower bar. The thing about having a newborn which many people don’t appreciate, is the ample amount of time that you have late at night to watch something like this. If you have Netflix and are a horror fan in need of something to watch this Labor Day weekend, one look at this gargantuan list I compiled of the new terror titles Netflix has added for instant streaming in just the first three days of this month should keep you busy until Labor Day next year. You'll find something for everyone, from older titles to recent releases, famous to obscure, classic to not-so-classic, monsters to maniacs - you name it.
For the record, I considered compiling this list in alphabetical order or by year of the film's release, but then I realized I had already spent well over an hour just sorting through the massive catalogue of titles Netflix has now made available for instant streaming and realized Labor Day would be over by the time I finished arranging this list in any kind of order. Ready? Here you go.

If I remember correctly, Joel Bergvall and Simon Sandquist’s 2008 supernatural thriller “Possession” was supposed to appear on North American DVD sometime last year. For whatever reason, the film vanished into the vapor, never to be seen again. For those of you who have been sitting tensely on pins and needles since experiencing the first trailer nearly two years ago, the knowledge that “Possession”, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar and Lee Pace, will joyously invade your living rooms on March 9th should be comforting. Will it be worth the wait? Judging from the trailer embedded below, I wouldn’t hold my breath. Anyone who has bore witness to “The Return” knows just how boring Gellar can be. You know it’s true, fanboy. Sorry to burst your bubble. Here’s the setup: Newlyweds Jess (Gellar) and Ryan (Landes) seem to have it all until a car accident renders both Ryan and his brother Roman (Pace) comatose.

I Know What You Did Last Summer, Scream 2, The Grudge, and The Return are some of the films that warrant Sarah Michelle Gellar's scream queen status. Still, I think we can all agree she earned the crown from her role in TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer series. Sideshow Collectibles gave a little holiday sneak preview during their 12 Days of Sideshow but now you can see not only all the goods but can join the wait list for this exclusive Buffy Maquette.

When was the last time Halloween came five times in one month? It’s been happening this October thanks to Bob Burns, monster kid fandom’s legendary “gift that keeps on giving”—and it has only taken him 42 years to get it all together! At the Bob Burns’ Hollywood Halloween website, a two-hour-plus documentary telling the story of Bob and Kathy Burns’ live Halloween shows has been serialized; the first of the five parts became available on October 5, and the rest are being spaced throughout the month.
For newbies, a bit of backstory: In 1967, Bob and wife Kathy, ensconced in their new Burbank home, decided to do a little more for trick-or-treaters than drop candy in their bags. When kids knocked on the door, it opened to reveal a “mad lab” complete with Frankenstein’s Monster (a dummy strapped to a diagonal operating table) and crackling lab equipment. For the next several years,...
