Totally Unnecessary

Warning: Spoilers
Warning: this review also contains spoilers of Bambi Meets Godzilla (1969)

In 1969 a Canadian artist released a short film called Bambi Meets Godzilla. With simple drawings and no pretenses, his original idea was well received and eventually became a cult film despite its short runtime. For years that impossible meeting and its comical result has managed legion of fans and some of them have made unofficial sequels, so is the case of Eric Fernandes who made this other short, Son of Bambi Meets Godzilla What's behind this other picture? it simply takes the original idea of Marv Newland but it gives the story the opposite ending of the first picture. This is the first mistake of the film, it gives us absolutely nothing, all the originality of the 1969 film is lost in images that are modeled after the other work and it is completely lacking in freshness.

The second problem is that, while making Godzilla and Bambi meet seemed like something completely absurd, the outcome of the original short had an overwhelming logic, once you finished watching it you had absolutely no doubt that if the deer and the giant lizard had indeed meet that would have been the result. Here on the other side the things happening simply make no sense a deer using a rocket launcher to kill a lizard? sorry but that's not funny at all and no logic at any level. One thing that should be noted is that the original film, despite a tragic ending, had no real confrontation between the characters, Godzilla does not even notices the deer after crushing it (hence the title was meet not vs). Here on the other side Godzilla is coming with the sole intention of finishing off Bambi's son (and inexplicably failing several times). The great thing about the first movie was its innocence, and here they took it away turning it into something meaningless.

Finally it must be noted that the animation is lame. All the above gives us an empty work with the sole goal of giving a vengeance of everyone that was sad for Godzilla crushing Bambi and making it in a totally unfunny way. Without any doubt Fernandes made this in his computer, upload it to the internet and forgot about it, for some reason it was found and it ended up in movie databases. The only good thing to say about this is that Newland receives proper credit for its original idea that inspired this, an idea which was simply remade in a way that took away everything that was good about it.

Poor CGI
planktonrules3 December 2009
This followup to BAMBI MEETS GODZILLA was made by a different film maker three decades later. Like the original film, this one is very, very short and very simply done. However, unlike the simple black and white line drawings of the original, this one uses computer generated graphics--very, very poor graphics for 1999. While at this point CGI was still somewhat new, the very blocky and unrealistic graphics for this film make it very ugly viewing--even for 1999. As for the story, it's funny--but hardly enough to make this a must-see. Overall, you could do worse with 2 minutes of your life...but you could also do much better than this rematch of Bambi's son and his father's murderer.

Not the original, not even close.

The first one was funny and had the outcome one would expect if Bambi were in fact to meet Godzilla. This one looked terrible, like a video game made by amateurs or something and the outcome was rather stupid. Not much to say about it without spoiling it only that for some reason Godzilla seems to be blind and not able to hit Bambi while in the original it looked quite frankly as if he was not really aiming for Bambi, but merely stepped on him because he was so much larger. This Godzilla leg also looked rather bad, more like the appendage of the awful American Godzilla. So this little sequel to me is pointless and should have never been made, I am guessing the ones behind the original had nothing to do with this one and this was made as part of some homework assignment in someone's computer lab class. Hopefully, they failed because this little short failed on so many levels with me.

Warning: Spoilers
Thirty years have passed since Godzilla crushed Bambi and now he looks to extol the same fate upon his son. Unfortunately for Godzilla, he's gone somewhat blind over the years and Bambi's son is a technological weapons specialist.

When I first saw the original "Bambi Meets Godzilla" in '86, I laughed out loud because it was so funny. At the same time, seeing a harmless little deer get squashed by a gigantic lizard monster just didn't seem fair to me. Deep down, I felt there should be some sort of retribution for what happened. This little short provided the closure people, like myself, were looking for (I say this half-joking, of course).

Is this as good as the original? Hardly. Nevertheless, seeing Godzilla answer for what he did thirty years earlier made this computer animated short a very satisfying watch for me. It's certainly worth 2 minutes out of your day to see.

Bambi's Revenge, except for revenge, I prefer the original, for its simplicity and texture... Regular... Bambi's Revenge, except for revenge, I prefer the original, for its simplicity and texture...

Son of Bambi Meets Godzilla (1999)

*** (out of 4)

Thirty years after the mean Godzilla killed Bambi, the deer's son has revenge on his mind. The deer is out eating his grass when the big lizard shows up but Bambi isn't scared. This short doesn't work nearly as well as the original but there's still plenty of laughs here. The computer animation is a tad bit on the rough side but that makes the film just as enjoyable. The meeting between the two is very little but, as with the original, that's why it works so well.

Check out the original film first.
