In the week leading up to the 89th Oscars, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a series of public programs celebrating this year’s nominees in the Animated Feature Film, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Animated and Live Action Short Film categories. All events will be held at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
Wamg attended the annual AMPAS reception featuring the 2016 Oscar nominated films in the Animated and Live-Action Short Film categories. The program featured screenings of all the nominated films in these categories, plus an onstage discussion with the filmmakers.
The evening was hosted by director Tim Miller (Deadpool), who himself was nominated in the Animated Short category in 2005 (Gopher Broke). In his opening comments, a clearly emotional Miller spoke about shorts being, for most filmmakers, a labor of love rather than a means to getting awards and accolades.

Hot on the heels of their Flash scoop, The Hollywood Reporter is back with another big get as they've learned that Deadpool director Tim Miller has signed on to develop a film adaptation of the immensely popular video game series Sonic the Hedgehog for Sony Pictures. He'll be joined by his longtime Blur Studios collaborator & fellow Academy Award-nominee Jeff Fowler (Gopher Broke), who is expected to helm the project while Miller serves as executive producer. Neal H. Moritz (Fast & Furious franchise), Takeshi Ito, & Mie Onishi will be on-board as producers and the Golan the Insatiable writing duo of Patrick Casey & Josh Miller are currently penning the script. The film, which will follow the titular Sonic and his friends Tails & Knuckles on an all-new adventure, is being described as a hybrid CG-animated/live-action family film, which sounds like something right in Miller's wheelhouse. So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

Ryan Reynolds's Deadpool is the film we never thought we'd see. 20th Century Fox kept the X-Men spinoff in limbo for years, and after his less than auspicious on-screen debut (more on that below), things didn't look good for Marvel Comics' 'Merc with a Mouth'.
More fool us. And when the first trailer debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2015, it was so well received that they played it twice.
Guess where I'm hiding the chimichanga, and win!

Ryan Reynolds “bears” it all in this first official reveal of Deadpool, aka “The Merc with a Mouth,” via his Twitter page (twitter.com/VancityReynolds).
He also mentioned that “No bears were harmed in the making of this photo. Though many bears likely turned on,” along with a photo of Burt Reynolds.

Based upon Marvel Comics’ most unconventional anti-hero, Deadpool tells the origin story of former Special Forces operative turned mercenary Wade Wilson, who after being subjected to a rogue experiment that leaves him with accelerated healing powers, adopts the alter ego Deadpool. Armed with his new abilities and a dark, twisted sense of humor, Deadpool hunts down the man who nearly destroyed his life.
Deadpool is from director Tim Miller. He was nominated, along with Jeff Fowler, in 2004 at the 77th Academy Awards in the Best Animated Short category for Gopher Broke.

Tim Miller has yet to direct a feature film, but he's already more than made a name for himself in the right circles around Hollywood. Nominated for an Oscar back in 2005 for his animated short "Gopher Broke" (excellent title, right?), Miller has since gone on to garner a reputation for his VFX work through his CG animation house, Blur Studio. The company provided the special effects on "Avatar" and the cherry on the top for Miller will surely have been earning Mvp status on "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" remake for his role as Creative Director on that crazy title sequence -- one of the few truly original strands of David Fincher's movie. Visually, at the very least, Tim Miller looks like a force to be reckoned with.
Last year he was handed the reins of the long-gestating "Deadpool" movie, with Ryan Reynolds still attached to play the "merc with a mouth.

Even though he’s on his way to a deserved, overdue Oscar win for The Social Network, David Fincher is still having some trouble getting a movie he produced out to the public. That film is The Goon, a CG adaptation of Eric Powell’s comic of the same name. With a main character voiced by Clancy Brown and supporting work from Paul Giamatti, it’s directed by Jeff Fowler and Tim Miller of Blur Studios (watch the former’s short Gopher Broke right here). It got a positive response from the Comic Con crowd when footage was shown there back in July, but the lack of financing for the movie is preventing a release.
Speaking to AICN (via DreadCentral), Fincher said that its lack of mainstream recognition is a struggle, specifically stating “animation that isn’t singing furry animals is hard” and that they “only really need $55 million”. That...

Dark Horse Entertainment, David Fincher and animation house Blur Studios are teaming up to bring cult comic "The Goon" to the movies as a CG-animated film.
Created by Eric Powell in 1999, the comic follows the adventures of a muscle-bound brawler who claims to be the primary enforcer for a feared mobster. The stories have a paranormal and comedic edge to them and concern ghosts, zombies, mad scientists and "skunk apes." Dark Horse has been publishing the comic since 2003.
Powell, who broke the news Wednesday on his Web site, would write the screenplay for "Goon," and Fincher would produce.
No studio is yet attached, and deals are being negotiated. Dark Horse, which has a first-look deal with Universal, is aiming to develop the project in-house before setting it up.
Blur is best known for its shorts, including the Academy Award-nominated "Gopher Broke," as well as its work in commercials and special effects. "Goon" be the company's first feature.
Caa-repped Fincher is in post on "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," and Dark Horse has "Hellboy 2: The Golden Army" opening July 11.
