This is an interesting little documentary film who tries to bring some light to the last death sentence of Franco's regime. This sentence was applied to two very different men, Salvador Puig Antich, a Catalan anarchist who presumably murdered a police officer (see "Salvador (Puig Antich)" 2006), and Heinz Ches, a foreign citizen who killed a 'guardia civil' next to the Spanish border with France.
Both were executed by the medieval method of the 'garrote' the 2nd of march of 1974.
But many unanswered questions remained from Heinz Ches's case. Was this his real name? What did it bring a "polish vagabond" to Spain? Why did he kill a 'guardia civil'? Why was this so-called "common criminal" sentenced to death, in a time that death sentences were only reserved to political motivated crimes? The film reconstructs the life of Georg Michael Welzel, Heinz Ches's real name, from East Germany to his death in Tarragona, Spain. We hear the testimonies from his relatives in Germany, from his lawyer in Spain, from the court registrar, from many experts on the last days of Franco's dictatorship (Juan Eslava Galán, Manuel Vázquez Montalbán...) and even from a former Franco's minister.
Totally recommended to those interested in the recent history of Spain. I also founded some links with the story of Meursault, the character from ALbert Camus's fantastic novel "L'Étranger".
