2023 wasn't a good year for superhero movies, with the vast majority of them drawing negative reviews and poor box office returns. One of the most shocking flops, however, was The Marvels.
Captain Marvel made over $1 billion in 2019 and the follow-up saw Carol Danvers paired up with WandaVision's Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel's title character. Now, Deadline has crunched the numbers and revealed that The Marvels' $206.1 million global box office haul was worse than we realised.
According to the trade, when all is said and done, the movie made a net loss of $237 million. It's no wonder then that Disney CEO Bob Iger has said Marvel Studios will begin moving away from developing unnecessary sequels.
As for what the future holds in store for these characters, it's hard to say.
Monica will clearly be part of a future Multiversal story after landing in the same reality as the X-Men,...

Netflix regularly takes down movies and TV shows because their agreements with content owners expire. Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC movies started appearing on Netflix in phases from December 2023. This move is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s plan to license more content to other platforms like Netflix.
In 2023, HBO titles became available on Netflix for the first time, with more expected throughout the year. However, these agreements were short-term, lasting only 3-5 months. By the end of March, most DC superhero movies on Netflix will be taken down. Here’s the list of movies leaving the platform:
‘Man of Steel’ (2013) ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ (2016) ‘Suicide Squad’ (2016) ‘Wonder Woman’ (2017) ‘Justice League’ (2017) ‘Shazam!’ (2018) ‘Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)’ (2020) ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ (2020) ‘The Suicide Squad’ (2021) ‘Black Adam’ (2022) ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ (2023) ‘Spy Kids: All the Time in the World’ (2011)

Netflix periodically removes movies and TV shows from its streaming service due to the expiration of licensing agreements with content owners. Warner Bros. Pictures’ DC movies were added to Netflix in waves starting December 2023. This is part of Warner Bros. Discovery’s strategy to license more titles to third-party services like Netflix.
Consequently, 2023 marked the first time HBO titles were available on Netflix, with plans for more throughout the year, but the contract was short-term in nature over a period of 3-5 months, and now by the end of March, most DC superhero movies that remain on the platform will be removed. The Dcu films in the Zack Snyder era were undoubtedly divisive among fans. The discourse around the films has mostly steered towards the negative side with many feeling underwhelmed by the undercooked narratives and the unsatisfying world-building. While there were bright spots such as Wonder Woman, Shazam!, and Aquaman, others were not received as well as the three.
Many DC films including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice are now streaming on Netflix
In addition to Max, Netflix also streamed most of the Dcu films of that era, making them accessible to people all over the world, especially in countries where Max is not available yet. Unfortunately, it seems Netflix is now removing various DC titles from its content by the end of March 2024.

If you haven’t taken the leap to bundle Disney+ and Hulu, it might be time. Streaming is only getting more expensive and competitive, and the enticing bundle (which also includes ESPN) might be a version of cable TV, but it’s also just cost efficient. Disney+ and Hulu are so intertwined that their monthly listing updates come in the same email — and as such, we decided to compile them here for you in the same list.
Whether you have Disney+ or Hulu, or both (and the IndieWire staff has weighed on our favorites), each has its benefits. Disney has the family-friendly titles, the Star Wars and Marvel (new episodes of “The Bad Batch” and “X-Men: 97” continue through April), while Hulu is the place to catch FX originals and network episodes. Both streamers have the rights to distribute National Geographic titles, which are well worth exploring along with the rest of the library.

It's been several days now since this year's Oscars ceremony, and yet I'm still scratching my head as to why the Academy had Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt present a montage honoring stunts and stunt performers without mentioning why they had selected these two specific actors to do so. Then there's the bitter irony of the Academy celebrating stunt performers while stubbornly refusing to give them an Oscar of their own, but that's a whole other rabbit hole.
While it's true the pair starred in dual halves of Barbenheimer last year, they've also got a new film coming out in "The Fall Guy." Loosely adapted from Glen A. Larson's '80s action-adventure TV series of the same name, the movie casts Gosling as a stuntman who's rapidly aging out of his occupation from years of risking permanent bodily harm, only to find himself unraveling a mystery on the set...

Awards season tends to give movie fans all of the glitz and glamor that we love about Hollywood…That is, until it doesn’t. As is tradition, the weekend of the 96th Academy Awards also saw the industry honoring the worst in motion pictures, with the Golden Raspberry Awards aka the Razzies giving out statues to the likes of Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey, Sylvester Stallone and Megan Fox.
While Expend4bles had the most nominations going into this year’s Razzies with seven, it was Blood and Honey – which popularized a hopefully limited trend of public domain horror – that won the most with five.
Here is the full list of Razzie Award winners:

Recently, the buzz around Hollywood is that WB/ Discovery is getting ready to take a massive $115 million write-down in content. Coyote vs Acme seems all but certain to be deleted, but apparently that’s not the only piece of content the company may be on the verge of scrapping. Indeed, the long-delayed adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot has been in limbo for a long time now, and many fans are wondering when (or if) the axe is going to fall.
How did we get here?

The Golden Raspberries have officially released their nominations and the list wasn’t all too shocking for the most part. Films like Winnie the Pooh: Blood & Honey and Expendables 4 rightfully deserve their Worst Picture nominations; however, arguably the biggest surprise of the bunch was seeing Shazam! Fury of the Gods is in that category as well. Warner Brothers Discovery hasn’t particularly had a good year. The moment James Gunn announced the end of the Dceu was when audiences opted to skip out on the last remaining films tied to that universe. Shazam! Fury of the Gods notably garnered lackluster reviews,...

Sony’s Madame Web has suffered a devastating blow following its release, facing both critical fallout and disappointing box office returns. Directed by S.J. The trailer buzz was worrisome, advance ticket sales anemic. Then last week, the critic reviews for Madame Web were posted, and they stung deepest of all — Sony’s Spider-Man spinoff received the lowest average Rotten Tomatoes score (13 percent) of any major superhero film in nearly a decade.
“On Wednesday night, you could actually watch advance purchase sales declining in real time as buyers were refunding their tickets,” marvels a major theatrical chain executive. “It really says something when you’d rather have Shazam! 2 numbers.”
It marked one of the lowest starts in Hollywood history for a film based on a Marvel character. Domestic box office for the first six days in North America was just $26.2 million after opening midweek on Valentine’s Day. International tallied $25.7 million from 61 markets. Even the fan-friendly CinemaScore grade was poor (C+ — extremely low for a superhero title).

The DC Extended Universe is dead.
Starting in 2008, several feature films based on Marvel Comics proved to be big hits, and Marvel Studios (in conjunction with Disney) would go on to rewrite the blockbuster landscape. For 15 straight years, Marvel dominated the box office by taking a serialized TV structure and applying it to movies, hence birthing the "Cinematic Universe." Each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was directly connected to all the others. In the "season finale episodes," characters would team up. The MCU never told very sophisticated stories — they all boiled down to "good guys" and "bad guys" engaging in pugilism — but they captured the public's attention like no film series had before.
Naturally, Warner Bros. tried to imitate the McU's success by launching the Dceu in 2013. After all, Warner Bros. still owned the film rights to an enormous back catalogue of superhero characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman,...

With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom came the end of the Dceu, otherwise known as the Snyderverse. And while some celebrate its demise, there are also many who mourn the loss of their heroes. But before we turn the page completely, let’s take a look back and rank the entire DC Extended Universe. I’m sure this won’t be controversial at all.
17. Suicide Squad
It doesn’t seem likely that we’ll ever get the fabled Ayer Cut of this film, but the one we received was rough. Filled with enough licensed music that it feels like a music video, Suicide Squad does everything wrong. From characters being introduced multiple times to the worst iteration of the Joker ever put to film, everything about this one is just a mess. If you love plots that don’t make sense and bad CGI, then this one is for you.

It seemed like The Expendables franchise would jump the shark with its third film. That entry would bring in such names like Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas, Kelsey Grammer and Wesley Snipes; however, it would betray its concept by pushing them aside for new blood who had little connection to the 80s/90s action genre that it was celebrating. Even with its fanbase, the third movie was not well-received, so it was perplexing what the intention was with a fourth film. And one that had the audacity to push Sylvester Stallone himself aside. The fourth movie came and went with a whimper, but the film has managed to secure a bevy of nominations…for the Razzie Awards.

Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods director David F. Sandberg recently said that he’ll be returning to the horror genre with his next feature, which would be an expansion of a couple short films he previously made. Now we’ll have to wait and see if that actually does turn out to be his next feature, because The Hollywood Reporter has just broken the news that Sandberg is re-teaming with Annabelle: Creation screenwriter Gary Dauberman for a movie based on the horror video game Until Dawn! Well, either way, we’re getting a new horror movie from Sandberg.
The Hollywood Reporter notes, first released in 2015, Until Dawn is an interactive horror video game that follows eight friends and frenemies who are brought together a remote mountain retreat. With live or die scenarios featuring a mysterious killer, cannibalistic wendigos, a cable car, and a long-ago...

David F. Sandberg, known for “Annabelle: Creation,” “Shazam!” and “Lights Out,” will direct the film adaptation of the PlayStation horror video game “Until Dawn” by Screen Gems and PlayStation Productions.
“It: Chapter Two” and “The Nun” screenwriter Gary Dauberman is doing the most recent pass on a script from “The Invitation” writer Blair Butler. The plot for the film is under wraps but is said to be an “R-rated and terrifying love letter to the horror genre.”
The PlayStation video game centers on eight friends trapped together on a remote mountain retreat — only to discover they are not alone. They must navigate dread and fear to make it through the night in one piece. The video game, which starred Rami Malek and Hayden Panettiere in motion-capture versions, was named in Variety’s 2021 list of games that deserve movie adaptations.

David F. Sandberg had a decade of short film directing credits before he made his feature debut with the 2016 film Lights Out – which happened to be a feature expansion of a short he made a few years earlier. The success of Lights Out allowed him to move on to direct Annabelle: Creation, Shazam!, and Shazam! Fury of the Gods… although, unfortunately, a Lights Out sequel fell by the wayside in the meantime. Sandberg recently confirmed to Collider that he’ll be returning to the horror genre for his next feature – which is based on not just one but two of his short films!
When asked if he’ll be returning to horror any time soon, Sandberg told Collider about the short-to-feature project he’s developing. “We’re working on that, actually. That’s on the way. I can’t say which (short films it’s based on), but it’s actually two.

Who is up for a massive DC movie binge? If you’re in the United States and have a Netflix subscription, you can do that right now through to at least April next year with the majority of titles from the Dceu and other DC movies dropping between December and January 2024. Here’s your updated guide to watching the movies in order.
We will cover three ways to watch the DC movies that have landed on Netflix.
Firstly, we’ll cover the simple release order. You’d have watched these movies in this order if you went to the theater each time a new DC movie dropped. Following that, we’ll look at the canon order of the Dceu, i.e., if you want to follow the timeline’s events closely. This will exclude any title that exists outside the Dceu. Finally, you’ll get the Kasey list.

The James Wan-produced horror film Lights Out made almost $150 million on a budget just under $5 million when it was released in 2016, so it was no surprise when New Line Cinema immediately greenlit a sequel. What’s surprising is that, seven years later, Lights Out 2 has still never made it into production. Collider recently hosted a screening of Lights Out with director David F. Sandberg in attendance, and during that event he talked a bit about the unmade sequel.
First, here’s a reminder of what was going on in Lights Out: When Rebecca left home, she thought she left her childhood fears behind. Growing up, she was never really sure of what was and wasn’t real when the lights went out… and now her little brother, Martin, is experiencing the same unexplained and terrifying events that had once tested her sanity and threatened her safety. The holiday movie season this year is packed with many options, much like other years have displayed. However, despite the bevy of titles, including Wonka, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Color Purple, Migration, Anyone But You and The Iron Claw, they weren’t enough to garner interest in audiences to flock to theaters around Christmastime. Without the year’s biggest double-feature event with Barbie and Oppenheimer, it could have been a worse showing for theaters as even the reliable blockbusters like the Mission: Impossible, Superhero, and Fast & Furious franchises would flop. It’s almost fitting that 2023 ends with a whimper.
Deadline has recently reported on the lackluster continued performance of the box office this week. Wonka stays on top as it is revealed, “On Wednesday, it was Warner Bros.’ Wonka that won the day with $8 million at 4,213 theaters, moving its running cume to $102.5M on its 13th day.

Color me surprised twice over. I missed the press screening of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the closing chapter of the DC Extended Universe, and ventured to a theater to check out a screening in IMAX on Christmas Day. The lobby was packed with customers, most of whom were going to see The Color Purple on its opening day. Given how much I’ve forgotten random stuff recently, I’ll go with that as the excuse for why I wasn’t expecting so many people to be watching movies on December 25th. That was surprise number one. Surprise number two, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom wasn’t a complete disaster.
Sure, it’s not going to earn a spot in the Top 10 (out of 15) Dceu films.

Things were looking bad for DC Studios in the post-covid era, but it seems that it’s only getting worse. In fact, one of their most profitable superheroes – Jason Momoa’s Aquaman – is projected to be a box office bomb, just like the rest of the DC films in 2023.
According to Box Office Pro, ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ has projected earnings for the opening weekend sit between $32 and $42 million domestically, and between $105 and $168 million globally. That’s abysmal, considering the movie has a budget of about $205 million, meaning it has to hit at least around $400 million to break even.
The first ‘Aquaman’ movie in 2018 had low projections as well, but then it surprised everyone and became one of Dceu’s most profitable projects, amassing over a billion dollars worldwide. However, we can’t expect ‘Aquaman 2’ to be the same kind of surprise. In fact, things are pointing towards a...

Zack Snyder’s latest big-budget effects-driven feature, an awards contender from Todd Haynes, Bradley Cooper’s sensitive portrayal of an American icon, a beloved follow-up to an Aardman classic and the conclusion of The Crown are some of the highlights of a jam-packed December schedule on Netflix.

Cinema chain owners are reportedly nervous about how Aquaman 2 will fare this Christmas. But might Wonka be the film that’ll clean up this December?
In the world according to Variety, cinema owners are looking at the late 2023 schedules and growing nervous. Where previous years – the pandemic-struck 2020 excluded – have had at least one major tentpole that could be banked on to make lots of money, this year’s line-up is comparatively threadbare.
The flashpoint for all this nervousness, seemingly, is Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom. Ordinarily, a superhero film like this – certainly one that also happens to be a sequel to a movie that made over a billion in 2018 – should be regarded as a sure-fire hit. But this is the topsy-turvy year of 2023, in which cape-based movies like The Marvels and Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania have all struggled. Aquaman studio Warner has also had a difficult time in this regard,...

“Ho ho ho no,” is what theater owners are saying as predictions for this year’s Christmas box office could lead to disaster. It’s that magical time of the year when Phoenix Theatres puts all its eggs in one tentpole basket, banking on the success of a top-flight cinematic experience to carry the holiday on its mighty shoulders. In 2022, Phoenix doubled down on Avatar: The Way of Water, with Spider-Man: No Way Home being 2021’s selection, with Star Wars: Rise of Skywalker for 2019. This year’s horse is the Dceu sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which is currently tracking to make less than $45 million during its opening weekend in the United States. Woof!

After nearly a decade, one of the biggest YA franchises is making its return to the big screen. Lionsgate couldn't have jumped faster when author Suzanne Collins announced a prequel novel to her smash hit "Hunger Games" series, with the studio cutting a deal to turn the book into a movie in the blink of an eye. That movie is now upon us in the form of "The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes." Taking place decades before the original films, the prequel is focused on a young Coriolanus Snow. The question is, do audiences care as much without Katniss Everdeen out front and center? Can this movie recapture some of that box office magic from years past?

Marvel Studios’ long awaited sequel to Captain Marvel, appropriately titled simply The Marvels, will finally be in theaters on Thursday night. Nearly four years after the original Brie Larson-starring superhero movie grossed over $1.1 billion at the box office, the follow-up should be an event. And yet industry prognosticators and analysts have shown the movie to be tracking surprisingly soft going into its first weekend, with early estimates ranging between $70 million and $80 million for its opening weekend—the lower end of which is less than half of Captain Marvel’s $153.4 million debut in 2019. Actual ticket pre-sales, however, suggest it could be even lower with the film reportedly tracking behind even Black Adam’s tepid $67 million debut.
As of press time, The Marvels looks like it might be the latest film in a spate of 2023 genre flicks that suggest superhero fatigue is real—which also includes now infamous flops like DC’s The Flash,...

Early Friday morning, the third biggest cinema chain in North America, Cinemark Theatres, announced its quarterly earnings, which included a significant surprise. After years of movie theater owners and exhibitors reporting grim news, the fiscal quarter that ran between July and October turned out to be something of a reversal: Cinemark saw not only its best Q3 since the pandemic… but also since before the pandemic started.
As per Cinemark’s press release, the Texas-based theater chain witnessed box office revenue rise 35 percent over the same frame in 2022 and a remarkable six percent over its 2019 counterpoint. Additionally, July 2023 marked the best July Cinemark has ever recorded. And all this occurred while studios and streaming services have let an actors strike that began in the summer drag into November.

The third installment in the A Quiet Place franchise, titled "A Quiet Place: Day One," is on the way, but fans will have to wait a little longer for it to arrive. As the SAG-AFTRA strike continues, Variety reported on Oct. 23 that Paramount Pictures has shuffled its upcoming film releases, including "A Quiet Place: Day One," which has been pushed from spring 2024 to the summertime. However, the movie's buzzy cast may make up for the delay.
Per Deadline, the spinoff film stars "Black Panther" star Lupita Nyong'o, "Stranger Things"'s Joseph Quinn, "Oppenheimer"'s Alex Wolff, "Shazam!"'s Djimon Hounsou, and "American Horror Story" star Denis O'Hare. Paramount green-lit the movie - which is based on an idea from John Krasinski, who wrote and directed the franchise's first two films - back in November 2020, but details didn't surface until April's CinemaCon, during which Krasinski unveiled the first look at the film.

The Dcu is currently a mess. Unfortunately for Shazam, the DC character is caught in the crossfire of mismanagement. Originally, Shazam! came out to glowing reviews from critics and fans when it was released in 2019. The film only made $367.7 million worldwide. However, the production budget was only $100 million, so Shazam! was ultimately profitable in the end. Fast forward to four years later in Shazam! While Season 2 of “Wheel of Time” concluded Friday, filming on the Prime Video fantasy series’ third season had already started filming prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike.
“I am speaking to you a day after filming it. We are in the midst of it. We are all energized by everything that’s going on in Season 3,” star Rosamund Pike told TheWrap in a June 28 interview, days before the onset of actors’ guild strike. “We feel like we’ve established the rules of our world, we can explore them and push the boundaries, we can do more experimental camera work and we can try and get a visual language for these incredible concepts that [author] Robert Jordan came up with.”
She said that casting for Season 3 has been shaping up “really, really, really well.”

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.
In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.
Outside of Prime Video’s more creepy fare, Shazam! Fury Of The Gods will debut, Upload will be back for a third season, and new film Awareness should scratch your sci-fi itch. Meanwhile, for Frasier heads – those who consider themselves utterly Frasier-pilled – all eleven seasons of the Cheers spinoff show will be streaming at the touch of a button.

The original ‘Aquaman’ movie was released almost five years ago, in December 2018, and considering it was a well-received movie that became the highest-grossing DC movie of all time with $1.148 billion grossed worldwide, one would think the sequel, the upcoming ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ would be one of the most-anticipated movies of the year. Well, not really.
With everything going around DC and the controversies that follow this upcoming sequel, not to mention all the commercial flops that Dceu has endured so far, it would be a huge miracle if this movie would even break even, let alone reach anywhere close to the original movie’s commercial success.
Whether we like it or not, DC fans have already given up on DC Extended Universe, as shown by the latest commercial results. The canon of this dying franchise will be closed for good with the release of ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,...

Warner Bros. put out a brief teaser for the full trailer of December’s Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
It’s been a tough year for DC Comics properties on film. Shazam! Fury of the Gods, Blue Beetle, and especially The Flash have all suffered poor fates at the box office in 2023.
And despite these record-breaking bombs, Warner Bros. and DC still have one film remaining on the release calendar with which to turn their bad fortunes around: Aquaman 2.
