Filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj had adapted two of Ruskin Bond's stories for his movies -- The Blue Umbrella (2005) and 7 Khoon Maaf (2011). The celebrated author says he would love to collaborate with Bhardwaj again and is sure that they will make something soon.
It has been a while since Bhardwaj and Bond teamed up for a project.
Asked when he will work with the director again, Bond responded in an email interview, "Vishal Bhardwaj adapted two of my stories for films. One was 7 Khoon Maaf ?from my short story 'Susanna's Seven Husbands' and The Blue Umbrella from my children's story of the same name. He is my neighbour in Mussoorie and I would love to collaborate with him again."
"He was interested to make something on my stories of Mr. Oliver, who is a schoolmaster, from my book called 'Mr. Oliver's Diary'. We have also discussed some other stories, of a very different nature.

Pixar has released a third collection of its acclaimed short films that features Bao, Sanjay’s Super Team, and more.
My bao is a disaster.
Pixar is hosting a group of journalists at its Emeryville, California campus to celebrate the release of Pixar Short Films Collection, Vol. 3. The volume of short films that precede Pixar main features includes the ode to family and Chinese culinary tradition, Bao, from director Domee Shi. That’s why we’re all currently trying our hand at making the classic Shanghai bao dumpling.
Creating bao requires extreme digital dexterity, as the corners of the dough must be pinched into a star pattern and then twisted to protect the yummy filling inside. My sausage fingers have a hard time with the pinching process so I just elect to begin twisting as much as I can. The final product, or what I believe to...

Hi everyone, Tim here. Those who know me in my other life at Antagony & Ecstasy are well aware of my affection for animation in its many forms, and starting this week, that’s going to be carried over here to the Film Experience. Officially, as of now, this space will be home to a weekly column about the current world of animation with, I suspect, regular guest appearances from classics of both American and international animated cinema.
And there's some pretty exciting news to kick things off. Right on the heels of the announcement of the 19 films submitted for consideration this year in the feature category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the ten-film list of titles that will be competing for the Best Animated Short Oscar. It feels a little bit like a course correction after last year, which saw two major studio releases hit...

Chicago – In an incredibly weak time for feature animation (since the glory of 2010, it’s been pretty dark out there), Pixar’s “Monsters University” has enough personality and genuine humor to stand out from its generic competition. It also helps the film’s quest for another Pixar Oscar for Best Animated Film that the recently-released Blu-ray is a gem, loaded with special features and including a spectacula HD transfer. It falls between the amazing “Toy Story 3” and the awful “Cars 2” on the Pixar spectrum but it’s still a good time and will make a lovely holiday season gift.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
“Monsters University” cleverly plays with what parents will already know and love about the college movie genre. The underdogs who overcome all odds — it’s an animated “Revenge of the Nerds” in a lot of ways. Overall, the film has a remarkable momentum, never succumbing to pacing problems...

Pixar goes back to college, and Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn try out at Google, but neither campus scores very highly in the comedy stakes
The start of November may seem early to be talking about Christmas shopping – or three months late, according to some tinsel-happy supermarket managers – but it's evidently when DVD distributors start. So numerous are the blockbusters returning for your seasonal delectation in the next few weeks that we're jumping the gun a bit on Monsters University (Disney, U), which roars – well, grunts non-threateningly – on to shelves on 11 November.
The once indomitable animation studio Pixar is currently a victim of its own high standards: Cars 2 and Brave were technically immaculate but narratively wan, a trend that continues with this belated prequel to 2001's superior Monsters, Inc. Looking back on the college days of one-eyed pea Mike (Billy Crystal) and hulking bully-turned-pal Sully (John Goodman) as they...

Disney/Pixar’s well-reviewed Monsters University is a prequel of sorts of Monsters Inc.
Monsters Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal, Cars) and James P. Sullivan “Sulley” (John Goodman, Flight) are back in this animated movie, but they’re younger and in the elite Scare Program, learning the best ways to scare.
For Mike, it’s a dream come true. All the best scarers come from Mu. But when he meets natural-born scarer Sulley, Mike’s dream is derailed. Their competitive spirits get both young monsters kicked out of the program and the only way to make things right is to work together.
The voice cast also includes Steve Buscemi (TV’s Boardwalk Empire), Helen Mirren (Hitchcock), Alfred Molina (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice), Sean P. Hayes (The Three Stooges...

Remember when Pixar made charming, vibrant stories, with engaging subtexts both stimulating for adults and relatable for children? Apparently, the sequel-cycle has infected this bastion of creativity. In hindsight, the stagnation that would become evident in the Monsters Inc. prequel Monsters University started as soon as the Pixar short started to roll, which is usually a good sign, but something about this one seemed stale. It was titled Paperman…or was it The Blue Umbrella?…Nope. Definitely Paperman…though…maybe The Blue Umbrella?…It was something with a deus ex ventus.
Then Monsters University started.

Monsters University
Directed by Dan Scanlon
Written by Daniel Gerson, Robert L. Baird, and Dan Scanlon
USA, 2013
It’s 2013, and in the world of pop culture, most of us comfortably take Pixar for granted. Here is a studio that, from 1995 to 2010, churned out financially successful films that were also unique, exciting, fresh, and captivating in ways other movie studios could only dream of. The relatively dark days arrived with Cars 2, a sequel to a movie that wasn’t as well-liked (rightly so) as Pixar’s other work. Though the doldrums lifted slightly with last year’s Brave, an original effort whose ambition was admirable even if the execution was muddled, news of sequels, prequels, and a potentially long-running lack of originality have made people think Pixar has lost its edge, or even its soul. So it’s gratifying to watch one of those dreaded continuations, Monsters University, turn out to be confident,...

"Monsters, Inc." may be the most original and underrated film ever to come out of Pixar, an inventive spin on the professional bogeymen hiding in kids' closets and the reasons they're there in the first place. It's their job, and a fully realized alternate universe is utterly dependent on their work.
"Monsters University" is a prequel that is far more conventional, not nearly as witty or clever as that original. The 3-D animation takes the art form to a new level, a few sentimental moments connect and the climax is a hum-dinger. But with the bar set so high by the first film, this "Mike & Sully: The Fraternity Years" can't help but feel like a letdown.
"University" takes us back to Mike Wazowski's childhood, when the smallest, shrimpiest-voiced monster on the bus resolved, after one school field trip to Monsters, Inc., to become a "scarer." It doesn't matter many people tell him,...

As is traditional with Pixar features, Monsters University is preceded by a short film featuring whimsical anthropomorphic objects falling in love. The Blue Umbrella is a bit twee, but charming nonetheless and sees two umbrellas meeting-cute amidst a city downpour. It was impressed on the audience by Mu producer Kori Rae that everything we were looking at was CGI and it’s a good thing she did as the photorealism was startling.
The film proper begins with a teeny tiny Mike Wazowski (Crystal) on a school trip to the Monsters Inc. factory of the original film. It’s there that he decides to dedicate his young life to...

In Pixar's "Monsters University," a prequel to 2001 "Monsters, Inc.," our expert "scarers" to be – the wisecracking pipsqueak Mike Wazowski and the burly James B. Sullivan – are college freshmen with high aspirations.
Pixar, too, knows something about expectations. Thanks to the gentle poetry of "Up," the cosmic romance of "Wall-e" and the unlikely artist portrait of "Ratatouille" (not to mention others), the mantle is high for Pixar, a paragon of pop culture.
But lately, the studio hasn't been living up to its uniquely high standard. "Monsters University" follows two subpar efforts, "Cars 2" and "Brave," both of which lacked Pixar's usual inventiveness. The digital animation outfit, it turned out, is human after all.
"Monsters University" is neither a bold return to form nor another misfire, but a charming, colorful coming-of-age tale that would be a less qualified success for all but Pixar. The profusion of sequels is indeed dismaying for a...

If you liked Monsters Inc., you're going to love Monsters University. The first film was fantastic, and it will live on as a classic, but I honestly thought Monsters University was a better, more entertaining movie. The main reason I like this prequel more is because I got to see the backstory of how Sulley and Mike met and became lifelong friends. Heart, soul, and entertainment is at the core of almost every Pixar film, but this one is brilliant in the way they expanded this Monsters world.
Beside the story, what makes the movie pop with greatness is the college setting and all of the new monstrous characters. Anyone that got a little taste of college life will have a fun connection to this movie. College is freakin' hard, and you've got to work your butt off to get through it. College might not even be something everyone is cut out for,...

Campus comedy with a heart, Pixar's Monsters University, is funny, terrific-looking, and a treat for fans of the original…
A dozen years after we first met Mike and Sulley in Pixar’s impressive, imaginative Monsters Inc., the duo is back for a college years prequel. First up, let’s allay the doubts of franchise-cynics by saying that the film works. As an entertaining family comedy and a touching how-did-they-get-there story, it works.
By focusing on Mike Wasowski’s quest to cast himself against type as a Scarer, Monsters University defines a clear emotional through-line that leads to an unexpected message. When you wish upon a star, do your dreams come true? Not in this picture. Sometimes, wishing and hard work just isn’t enough. Sometimes, you have to fail and adapt.

It’s not too long now until Pixar’s latest, Monsters University (and lovely short The Blue Umbrella) hits our cinemas. To remind us of the fact, the company has released what it’s calling the “final” trailer. Check it out…Monsters University, as the title suggests, has us winging back in time to the days when Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (John Goodman) were fresh-faced college boys beasts and part of the prestigious faculty’s Scare Programme. There, taught by Professor Knight (Alfred Molina) and overseen by the intimidating Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren), they strive to either overcome their deficiencies (Mike) or live up to their family credentials (Sulley). When something goes badly wrong, our heroes are ejected from the class and threatened with expulsion. To stay in school, they’ll have to compete in – and win – the Scare Games. Which is no easy feat when...

I couldn't help but lean in to my computer screen upon seeing the above image from Monsters University. From the detail in fur and clothing to the level of attention when it comes to the depth of focus, this picture is about as close to photo realistic as it would seem it could get. You can click the image above for the ultra hi-res version and zoom around it, but there were only a few spots I noticed where things were almost a little too perfect such as Sully's eyes, teeth and horns, but look at the shadows on the trees in the background, the soft focus is perfect as is the fact the animators haven't blown out the color of the monsters in the foreground seeing how they are in the shadows while much of the background is in the sunlight. As has already been reported, the short film...

Shortly after I mention Pixar's upcoming short film The Blue Umbrella in a post discussing a new clip from Monsters University, a poster for the short, which will premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, shows up online. The film will play in front of Monsters University on June 21 and follows a blue umbrella that takes a fancy to a red umbrella and, in trying to follow that fancy, gets weather-beaten and wind-blown during a rainstorm. Check out the poster below (via Vulture) and just above is the brief clip that premiered some time back.

John Goodman stopped by "Late Night With Jimmy Fallon" and in the process brought with him the first clip from Monsters University, Pixar's latest animated feature set to hit theaters on June 21. The film tells the story of Monsters, Inc. characters Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) and James P. Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman) and their days in college when they didn't exactly hit it off, in fact, from the moment the two mismatched monsters met they couldn't stand each other. Monsters University unlocks the door to how Mike and Sully overcame their differences and became the best of friends and this clip gives you a look at what probably got their friendship off to a rocky start. The one thing I will say about this clip is that the animation looks amazing. I know they are going for photo realism in the short film The Blue Umbrella, which...

The summer movie season is only a few months away and Pixar's entry into the mid-year fray will be Monsters University. Today, we get a sneak peek at the Pixar short that will screen in front of the prequel to the 2001 hit Monsters, Inc. The latest inanimate objects to be brought to life are umbrellas. There's not much to this teaser, other than a photo-realistic look at the short, titled The Blue Umbrella. What are your thoughts on the animation? Do you like the photo-realistic style or would you prefer more traditional computer generated animation that Pixar has become synonymous with? Monsters University opens June 21.

The Pixar shorts have always been dependable as sources of light entertainment that don't skimp on adorableness, and the newest bite-sized feature from the animation house, "The Blue Umbrella," fits the bill.
The directorial debut of technical artist Saschka Unseld, "The Blue Umbrella" tells the story of two umbrellas that hit it off on one rainy day. And it's really freakin' cute.
Check out a clip from "The Blue Umbrella" (via WSJ) and read more about the short after the jump!
As you probably noticed from the clip, "The Blue Umbrella" goes for a more photorealistic look than other Pixar films, something that's not lost on John Lasseter.
"We had never at Pixar attempted to produce images that looked absolutely photorealistic," he said. "We always took the tools that were capable of creating photorealistic imagery and created images the audience knew did not exist in the real world."

Pixar has released a fist look clip at their new animated short film The Blue Umbrella. The story follows "a blue umbrella that notices and fancies a red umbrella. Their budding attraction is interrupted by distance and the forces of nature, until objects on the street come to life to help them reunite... A central part of the story is the idea of unexpected corners of the city coming alive, such as construction signs and a post office mailbox."
The short was directed by camera and staging artist Saschka Unseld, and the idea for it was inspired by seeing an abandoned umbrella lying in the gutter, the director explained...
It was the saddest thing. I stood there and wondered what had happened to him. I think that was when I got the idea of giving him a story.

It's true, we have been complaining a lot lately about Pixar's creative nosedive in recent years, and if they told us they were doing a movie about anthropomorphic umbrellas we'd probably tell them to piss off.
However, if the new 30-second clip from said short film, entitled "The Blue Umbrella" (courtesy of The Wall Street Journal) is any indication, this might be another breakthrough from the animation powerhouse.
Directed by Saschka Unseld, a layout artist on "Toy Story 3" and "Brave," this rainy day story focuses on two adorable umbrellas with emoticon faces that get the hots for each other. How the mechanics of the sex works for them we have no clue…
The big deal is that everything (except the cartoony expressions) will be rendered in photorealistic detail, including amazing depth of field and gorgeous lighting. There will also be singing. Whether they will actually animate human faces realistically...

The first clip from new Pixar short film The Blue Umbrella has been revealed online, and you can watch it here. Any Pixar film is reason enough to make the journey to your local multiplex, and the accompanying shorts are always the icing on an already substantial cake. This one, which features a pair of brightly hued brollies falling in love, looks set to be as adorable as its predecessors, with a non-human love story to rival Wall•E’s in the cutesiness stakes. And while the finished short is unlikely to last longer than a few...

Years of working in a major city eventually resulted in me developing a wariness of umbrellas and more specifically, a fear of having my eye poked out by one while walking on a crowded sidewalk on a rainy day. Looking at the preview for Pixar's new short The Blue Umbrella, I'm actually a little hopeful that Pixar's six-minute short might help assuage my discomfort around these menacing devices. If not, at the very least, the short looks very sweet. The story for The Blue Umbrella focuses on a blue umbrella that falls for a red one, but the two umbrellas are soon separated by forces of nature. The clip below comes courtesy of The Wall Street Journal, and gives us a look at what appears to be the first encounter for these two umbrellas. With the Toy Story films alone, Pixar has made great stories from inanimate objects, so I...

"Monsters University" will be the last sequel we'll have to endure (for now) from Pixar before their more exciting offerings on the slate, including "The Inside Out," "The Untitled Pixar Movie about The Día de los Muertos" and "The Good Dinosaur," arrive. But for those salivating for some original content from the animation studio, their shorts have always delivered, and it looks like "The Blue Umbrella" will be another standout. Set to pay in front of "Monsters University" later this year, the first clip for the short film has dropped, and as always, it looks charming as hell. Directed by Saschka Unseld, a camera and staging artist who has worked for Pixar since 2008, the story follows a blue umbrella who becomes enamored of a red umbrella, before nature drives them apart. But thanks to some neighborhood objects, they get reunited. The director told The Wall Street Journal that a discarded umbrella in.

Pixar has revealed a clip from their latest short film The Blue Umbrella, directed by Saschka Unseld, and the big selling point is the photorealistic nature that's intended. That is, outside of the fact all the objects in the world will be given the simplest of facial features to help bring them to life. The short will play in front of Monsters University on June 21 and is said to run six minutes long and follows a blue umbrella that takes a fancy to a red umbrella and, in trying to follow that fancy, gets weather-beaten and wind-blown during a rainstorm. The attempt at photorealism resulted in frames of film that could take anywhere from 20 to 30 hours to render. Pixar's chief technology officer Steve May discussed the process with the Wall Street Journal saying, "We try to simulate those things in computer animation, but the truth is, until just recently, we...

It looks completely adorable already! In addition to teasing some concept art for their upcoming projects, Pixar has also decided to unveil their new short film playing in front of Monsters University this summer (out June 21st). It's called The Blue Umbrella and the first introduction includes mention of the rather interesting director, Saschka Unseld, who pitched his way up from the technical artists section of Pixar, where the specialties range from lighting to clothing-simulation software, not usually where directors come from but he has some obvious talent. The reveal includes a quick clip from the new short film, see it below. In Pixar's Blue Umbrella, the look of the film was to appear photographic, even though it's about umbrellas. Some scenes could take 20 to 30 hours to render one frame. "We had never at Pixar attempted to produce images that looked absolutely photorealistic," John Lasseter told Wall Street Journal ...

The 11th annual Coney Island Film Festival, running Sept. 23-25, offers an exquisite blend of freak show, burlesque and cinematic oddities, featuring movies about reformed gang members, unwitting superheroes, rock ‘n’ roll heaven and tons and tons of short films.
The fest opens with the portrait of a real-life Coney Island badass, Keith Suber, a reformed gang member who now teaches kids that violence isn’t the solution to their problems in the documentary The Last Immortal, directed by Charles Denson.
However, the highlight of the festival — in Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s opinion — is the headbangin’ documentary Heavy Metal Picnic by Jeff Krulik and John Heyn, which beautifully relives the glory days of ’80s era rock ‘n’ roll Maryland in all its raucous glory. Featuring footage from an outrageous backwoods farm concert and a reunion among its (slightly) more mature participants. Read the official Bad Lit documentary review here.
