The bipolarity of star wars (vhs)
leplatypus17 August 2016
This documentary is a must-see for all SW fans because it's the only dense, long, intellectual, philosophical speech about the franchise that I know and that features his father himself, Georges Lucas (who speaks by the way at his SW ranch that lies indeed in a beautiful natural location). When you hear him, you are really impressed by his culture, his wisdom, his humility and his convictions: the need for transcendence, the acceptance of others, the importance of family. Sure the first trilogy is built on those feelings and his second trilogy deals also with that. But the problem is that when you watch those prequels and all the following productions, all this background seems finally very, very far away. As the documentary was done at the release of Episode I, Lucas praises digital effects for Jar-Jar, Wattoo, describes the Gungan under-water realm as a deeply thought fantasy and shows Darth Maul as the universal evil and Jedi as galactic therapists! Well, no matter how he can greatly exposes his ideas, the fact remains that Episode I has a weak plot, with weak characters, very loosely tied together and with violence as the only cure. So at the end, SW has sure strong mythic foundations but it would be too much and surely wrong to say that all those movies are a mythology….
