Quotes

  • Charlie Hinton : Okay, this is it. Time to give 'em a summer they'll never forget.

    [bus crashes into cabin]

Phil : They won't forget that.

  • Charlie Hinton : You missed your train.

Buck : I missed *a* train. Haven't really decided which one I'm getting on yet.

Charlie Hinton : Thought you had to be back for manoeuvres.

Buck : That's true, but *next* year. That's about as often as they let a broke-down retiree come out and play with the reservists.

Charlie Hinton : [closes his eyes, nods and sighs]  Retiree.

    Buck : Yeah.

    [leans back on the bench]

Buck : About the only action I get these days is when college students are doing... research papers on military history.

[Charlie sighs; Buck widdles a bit of wood with his knife]

Charlie Hinton : So, uh, you abandoned your post this morning.

Buck : [looks up]  Good soldier knows when he's in hostile territory.

Charlie Hinton : You heard me last night, didn't you? I guess I've had a few things on my mind over the last... thirty years or so.

Buck : [points to Charlie]  I didn't even know you felt that way. Strange, getting older.

    [pauses]

Buck : Easier remembering things the way you wish they were.

[Charlie listens intently; Buck sticks out his chin and stares straight ahead]

Buck : I want you to know I'm proud of the man you've become.

    [Charlie blinks]

Buck : The way you make adjustments in the field, like opening a day care centre when you lost your job.

[cocks his head to one side and takes a deep breath]

Buck : Me, I wouldn't be able to do that.

[a fleeting smiles plays on Charlie's lips]

Buck : I've always needed more structure.

[Buck hangs his arm over the back of the bench and looks away]

Charlie Hinton : [sighs]  I'm far from perfect, believe me. Far from it.

[glances at Buck, then stares ahead with a look of determination]

Charlie Hinton : I know one thing, though. Those kids are gonna be crushed unless your leathery old butt comes back.

[Buck truns swiftly and looks Charlie in the eye; Charlie beams and Buck smiles back at him]

  • Charlie Hinton : Let me tell you a little something about being tough, OK? Being tough doesn't necessarily make you a hero. Sometimes, tough people grow up to be arrogant and selfish and-and *stubborn*! You guys just need to be yourselves, all right? And know that by being yourselves, you're gonna be winners, no matter what.

Billy : Even if we choke like you?

Charlie Hinton : [points]  *Especially* if you choke like me!

    [Billy grins]

Charlie Hinton : Look, I just want you guys to grow up to be kind and caring and excepting of people, even if they make mistakes.

  • [Buck is missing; Charlie and the kids are doing stretches; Phil approaches]

Phil : No news yet on Buck. I have Margaret driving all over town, but I *did* find this in your office.

    [hands Charlie a note]

Charlie Hinton : Oh. "Charlie, Uncle Sam called about another job, which is just as well, seeing as things aren't working out here, your tough Colonel Buck."

    Phil : I'll keep looking.

    [leaves]

    Charlie Hinton : OK.

Juliette : [sees the note]  Is that from Grandpa?

Charlie Hinton : [turns to face the kids]  Uh, yes. Yes, it is.

Carl : He's not coming back?

    Charlie Hinton : Well, no.

Max : He's the one that showed us how to do *everything*!

Billy : Yeah! We're gonna get whooped, and *I* don't get whooped! I *do* the whooping!

Becca : We're doomed! *Doomed*, I tell you!

Charlie Hinton : Wait, wait, wait. Wait a minute, all right? Just because Buck got called away to serve his country in the middle of the night doesn't mean we just take everything he taught us and just let it go to waste.

    Juliette : He deserted us.

Robert : Without so much as a "see ya."

Charlie Hinton : No. No, no, no, no, no. He didn't. No-ho, it's here in the letter, listen. Listen. "Dear Ben, Max, Juliette, Robert, Carl, Jack, uh, Becca, Billy and Mullet. I'm sorry to leave in the middle of the night..."

    [motions to Robert]

Charlie Hinton : "... without even saying see ya..."

    [Robert nods]

Charlie Hinton : "... but it's important that you don't panic. The 103rd Airborne is staging manoeuvres tonight, and-- Well, let's just say they could learn a thing or two about teamwork from you guys."

Becca : The 103rd was retired after World War Two.

Charlie Hinton : Tell you what? They're bringing it back.

Jack : We can't do this without Buck.

    Juliette , Carl , Max , Billy , Becca , Robert , Ben : Yeah.

Charlie Hinton : Sure we can. And you know what? He would've *wanted* it that way. You know why? Because we're a family. And we're gonna pull each other up, because that's what families do.

Ben : Well, if family's so important, why'd Grandpa Buck leave?

    Juliette , Carl , Max , Billy , Becca , Robert , Jack : Yeah.

[Charlie's smile fades; shaking their heads, the disappointed kids skalk off]

  • Charlie Hinton : Excuse me, Uncle Morty, you can't leave! You're supposed to be overseeing the camp! We're *partners*!

Uncle Morty : I've been watching over this camp for thirty years. It's time I took a vacation, *partner.* Don't worry, Dale here will show you the ropes. He's the best councillor I got!

  • Camp Driftwood Kid : This is the worst camp ever!

Charlie Hinton : Thanks for coming.

  • [from trailer]

    Ben : There it is!

Charlie Hinton : Camp Driftwood! We were here when we were kids.

Phil : We don't know how to run a camp!

Charlie Hinton : Yes, but we didn't know how to run a day care centre either.

Narrator : What could possibly go wrong?

  • Dale : What *else* can go wrong?

Charlie Hinton : No, please! Don't say that!

[the bathroom explodes; the children scream; Phil is covered in soot, his pants are down and the toilet seat is around his neck]

Phil : I think we're gonna need more toilet paper.

  • Charlie Hinton : You were *way* out of line with what you did today. Now, if we do this thing, we do it *my* way! You got it?

Buck : [crosses his arms]  Affirmative.

Charlie Hinton : Good! Now... what do you think we should do?
