With his Instagram posts of old Thrasher magazine covers, flyers of seminal post-hardcore group Jawbox, and pictures with Neko Case, Matt Jencik is not your stereotypical Taylor Swift target. The 50-year-old, long-haired, bespectacled longtime buyer for Chicago’s legendary Reckless Records admits he’d probably be listening to Van Halen at home. But in records stores like Reckless and around the country, things have changed drastically.

With its list of new releases for July 2023, Prime Video is going to help you stay safe from the oppressive July sun.
Highlighting the Amazon Originals on the TV side this month are two heavy hitters. The first is The Horror of Dolores Roach on July 7. Based on a podcast of the same name, this series could best be described as a modern day Sweeney Todd? Why, you ask? Well you know why. Think about it. Then season 2 of Neil Gaiman adaptation Good Omens premieres on July 28. This season will follow angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen) and demon Crowley (David Tenant) as they seek to keep the Archangel Gabriel (Jon Hamm) away from both heaven and hell.
There aren’t any Amazon Original movies of note this month and that’s alright as the influx of library titles is more than enough. July 1 sees the arrival of The 40-Year-Old Virgin, No Country for Old Men,...

The second season of original series “Almost Paradise” is set to premiere on Freevee on July 21. When hypertension forces DEA agent Alex Walker (played by Christian Kane) into early retirement, he moves to the Philippines in hopes of a quieter life. But unfortunately for him, he can’t avoid danger. Soon, the local police ask him to help solve a series of serious crimes.
Watch the “Almost Paradise” Season 2 trailer:
Also coming to Amazon’s free streaming service in July is the incredibly meta action series “Ze Network.” In the show, David Hasselhoff plays himself as he takes a gig at an English-language theater in Germany — and we all know that Germans love David Hasselhoff. Netflix has confirmed that 40 new original series, movies and specials will be debuting on the streaming service in September. Leading off lineup is the first season of “The Politician” from the Emmy-winning Ryan Murphy. This drama about an ambitious politico stars Tony champ Ben Platt and Oscar winner Gwyneth Paltrow. Among the other freshman series one of the most intriguing is “Criminals,” an anthology set in four police stations in the UK, France, Germany and Spain.
Two limited series tell true-life stories. “Unbelievable” chronicles the efforts of two detectives to discover the truth about an alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl. And “Spy” showcases Sacha Baron Cohen as Israeli Mossad agent Eli Cohen, who went undercover in 1960s Syria. Among the new films on offer is Zach Galifianakis’ satire “Between Two Ferns: The Movie.”

Dev Hynes, A.K.A. Blood Orange, released his latest mixtape Angel’s Pulse earlier this month. He’s unveiled the self-directed music video for mixtape track “Benzo,” featuring him and his cohort dressed as French aristocracy. After arriving late at the court, Hynes performs the song in front of the gathered lords and ladies, mixing live cello performance with the more electronic backing track. The entire video exists on this fine line between the traditional and technological: nNeon signs accent the otherwise antique-adorned room where Hynes plays.

With his 2017 album Flower Boy, Tyler, the Creator set out to answer a simple, burning question: Who dat boy? The result was nothing short of a revelation. Tyler bloomed almost literally, burrowing into his past and emerging from the closet amidst naturalistic motifs and a sun-drenched landscape of woozy synths, piano splashes, and Mancini-esque strings. In the process, he radically re-contextualized his history as a Ritalin-addled provocateur who made songs with titles like “AssMilk,” tweeted under the nom de guerre @fucktyler, and hurled gay slurs with a disturbing regularity. Ultimately,...

Chances are, when you heard that Sony Pictures Animation was making The Emoji Movie, you assumed that it would be a shameless marketing strategy for various mobile phone applications. While the first teaser trailer doesn’t exactly confirm this, it does nothing to dispel that expectation, either.
Written and directed by Anthony Leondis (Igor), and co-written by Eric Siegel (Men At Work), The Emoji Movie promises an adventurous ride through your favourite digital landscapes – but whether the finished product will deliver on that promise is not clear from this promotional footage.

Sony Animation is pulling out all the stops to boost its output for 2017 and 2018, and the result is some fairly wide-ranging news regarding both the television and film side of the operation. With its animated Spider-Man feature already moving full-speed ahead – with Phil Lord and Chris Miller on board – and television series of both Ghostbusters and Cloudy With a Chance Of Meatballs in development, the biggest titles currently under discussion are Hotel Transylvania 3, that film’s overall franchise, and EmojiMovie: Express Yourself.

Recently, Sony announced that the director of the first two instalments of the highly successful franchise – Genndy Tartakovsky – had opted not to return for the third movie. This was widely acknowledged to be the result of his return to the Samurai Jack fold, since he was that show’s creator, and he just headed up a brand new season. Though many balked at its announcement, Sony Pictures Animation has reminded us all that its Emoji Movie is still very much in development, and it has a new release date to call its own: August 11, 2017.
It was just one of a number of animated features that the studio dated, with the other notable reshuffling arriving in the form of Chris Lord and Phil Miller’s animated Spider-Man movie, which has shied away from its tentative 2017 window – logical, given that Marvel’s live-action feature is due in 2017 – and taken up residence at December 21, 2018.
Lord and Miller are currently pitching a treatment for the animated film and are set to go on to produce. They’ll stop short of directing, though, with a certain Han Solo spinoff movie looming on the horizon as the creative pair begin to make tracks for the Star Wars universe.

Sony Pictures Animation must certainly be enjoying how people are taking in the Pac-Man-heavy marketing for this weeks' Pixels (and, to the film's mild credit, he is the best part of it), because the suits in charge have ponied up the near seven figures to have some other yellow-faced friends transition to the big screen. In a heated three-studio audition, Sony won the right to have their banner placed in front of an Emoji movie. With Warner Bros and Paramount reported to be the other two studios vying to get the expressive, social media/text message-based personalities their cinematic due, it's apparently a ripe opportunity to take this property (c) to the next level, as the Japan-hatched ideograms don't subside themselves to any pesky rights, making them essentially free-reign when it comes to marketing, promoting and all that jazz. Does it matter that they'll have to take the extra route...

Sony Pictures Animation won an auction between three studios for an animated movie pitch centering on the Emoji, which are icons often used in social media to express emotions and objects. The project will be co-written by Eric Siegel and Anthony Leondis. It will be directed by Leondis (Igor, Kung Fu Panda: Secrets of the Masters), who initially pitched the project to studios (Sony, Warner Bros, Paramount), with storyboards highlighting details of the story. The attractive thing about an "Emoji" movie is that there are no rights to purchase. Because of that, there is already another similar project being shopped around.

Proving that Hollywood thinks anything is a good idea (even when it is absolutely terrible), Emoji’s are headed to the big screen. Yes, those cute winky faces that you send to your friends are getting their own movie. And whats more, Deadline is reporting there was even a heated bidding war between Sony Pictures, Warner Bros., and Paramount over Eric Siegel (Men at Work) and Anthony Leondis' (Igor, and slated to direct this project) pitch for an Emoji centric movie, which Sony won with a reported seven figure pay out. So apparently, this license is something people actually want to make, but will anybody actually want to see it? Sure, The Lego Movie proved there is a market to make something genuinely compelling out of the most unlikely of sources, as evidenced by the the upcoming Pixels, but it’s a big jump from iconic characters from multiple...

You read that right: Emoji The Movie is in the works at Sony Pictures Animation...
And you thought some of the remake stories we've been running have been odd.
Still, we suppose it was inevitable, really. The rise of the Emoji - those little pictures designed to get across messages that used to be conveyed by things such as words - has been quick and brutal. The Emoji first came to prominence in Japan in the late 1990s, and we now learn that there's going to be an Emoji movie.
The film has come about courtesy of a pitch from Eric Siegel (the TV show Men At Work) and Anthony Leondis (who made Igor, and DreamWorks' unreleased B.O.O.: Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations). Leondis reportedly storyboarded the film in detail, leading to a bidding war breaking out between Sony Pictures animation, Warner Bros and Paramount.

I learned something with today's ratings bulletin beyond the actual ratings for a trio of upcoming films. I learned Amber Heard and Johnny Depp got married, and not necessarily all that recently... back in February. On top of that, she is apparently going by Amber Heard Depp now, or at least that's how IMDb is referring to her. Yeah, pretty exciting stuff. I found this out because Heard stars in Pamela Romanowsky's upcoming film The Adderall Diaries (as Amber Heard) alongside a large list of names including James Franco, Christian Slater, Wilmer Valderrama, Ed Harris, Jim Parrack, Cynthia Nixon and Timothee Chalamet. The pic played the Tribeca Film Festival and will be released by A24 later this year, but no official date has yet been set. Next we have a PG-13 rating for a couple of upcoming 20th Century Fox features, first off there's Fantastic Four and its "sci-fi...

How you react to news that Sony – already in production on one film based on a modern tech trend with Angry Birds – is planning one based around Emoji might depend on your age and your ‘net-savviness. So prepare to consider this Omg awesomesauce or another sign of the end times…According to Deadline, Sony Pictures Animation won a bidding war for a pitch by director Anthony Leondis, who travelled between the studios with a batch of storyboards showing how the basic plot will play out. Sony nabbed the project and Eric Siegel is aboard to turn the idea into a script for an animated adventure.Quite what that will be remains to be seen: at least in the case of something like Lego or the Angry Birds, you had narrative plans, characters and worlds built up. Emoji, the Japan-spawned graphical representations of faces, pets, objects and, yes, poop, wouldn’t...

2014 was one of the least interesting years in animation I can remember from a studio perspective. Granted, I didn't see Penguins of Madagascar or The Book of Life, but at the same time I didn't really want to and neither Dreamworks or Fox even bothered sending either film to members of the Broadcast Film Critics Association for consideration for this year's Critics Choice Awards. Yikes, if the studio has that little confidence in the movies what does that say about themc The "best" animated films of the year that I saw were How to Train Your Dragon 2 and, I guess, Big Hero 6, neither of which really moved the dial and the former resulted in Dreamworks scrapping plans for two more Dragon films and deciding a third would suffice. So what do we have to look forward to in 2015c Will the new year be any betterc Well, in...

Dreamworks Animation is developing a new Ghostbusters-like movie called B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherwordly Operations. It really sounds like it could be a great movie. It was supposed to be released on June 5th, 2015, but the studio has has pulled it from that date, and a new one has yet to be given. Pixar’s Inside Out is scheduled for June 19th, 2015, and it seems like DreamWorks doesn’t want to compete with that.
The supernatural action comedy follows two bumbling apparitions who find themselves in an extraordinary after-life adventure when they join the Bureau of Otherworldly Operations (B.O.O.) – the ghost world’s elite counter-haunting unit – and ultimately must face off against the planet’s greatest haunter.
B.O.O. features the voices of Seth Rogen and Melissa McCarthy as the lead ghost agents. Rashida Jones, Matt Bomer, Jennifer Coolidge, and Octavia Spencer voice additional roles.

When DreamWorks first unveiled its kid-friendly animation B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations, the all-new IP seemed to echo the comic tones of other genre pieces like Men In Black and Ghostbusters — particularly the latter, with Bill Murray himself on board to voice the film’s overarching big bad.
And while we’re a ways away from seeing any footage from the upcoming action comedy, we now know the style of DreamWorks’ latest project thanks to a pre-emptive marketing image courtesy of Amazon.
Going off of face value, the art style of B.O.O. is reminiscent of Nickelodeon’s Jimmy Neutron combined with a dollop of the studio’s other franchises, such as Kung Fu Panda and How To Train Your Dragon.
Perhaps what’s most promising about B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations at this early stage is its eye-catching ensemble cast. Joining the aforementioned Bill Murray are Seth Rogen...

Blockbuster season is almost upon us, but what will next summer's big hitters be? Here's a roundup
Once upon a time, summer blockbuster season 2015 was set to be packed with the biggest collision of big franchises we'd ever seen together. However, one by one, lots of these films moved away to other dates. As such, you won't be seeing Star Wars: Episode VII, Pirates Of The Caribbean 5, Independence Day 2, Batman Vs Superman or Finding Dory in a cinema next summer.
But even with those films gone, there's still no shortage of huge movies battling for your cash in a year's time. And as is traditional for us at the start of summer blockbuster season, we've taken a look at what's coming up in 12 months' time.
We kick off at the start of April (although note that March has Kenneth Branagh’s live action Cinderella movie,...

No, friend, you don’t belong dead. The masses definitely disagree with the Monster. (Ignore the mob of parochial peasants bearing pitchforks and flaming torches, because they're only film extras and their opinion on anything doesn't matter.)
Time has proved that Frankenstein's Monster (a.k.a. The Creature) is eternally popular and ever- relevant and, thus, should never be allowed to just die.
He's easy to revive. A few zaps of electricity and some dramatic lighting and, oh God! It's alive! It's alive! He is, indeed, alive again, shaped like Aaron Eckhart and gracing the big screen now that fresh release I, Frankenstein has found its way into theatres. You needn't worry if you don't get a chance...

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). It’s true that films like The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug and Star Trek Into Darkness had outstanding effects as well, but nothing even came close to the amazing,...

Bill Murray may be completely out of the picture for Ghostbusters 3, but don't take that to mean that he's completely done with the spirit world. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the comedic legend has just signed on to lend his voice to Dreamworks Animation's B.O.O.: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations, joining an all star cast. Described as a supernatural action comedy written and directed by Tony Leondis (Igor), the movie centers on a pair of ghosts named Moss (Seth Rogen) and Watts (Melissa McCarthy) who work for a top secret government agency that works to protect human beings from evil ghosts and their attempts to haunt the living. Things start to go very wrong, however, when the duo discover that the Most Wanted Haunter and his spectral army are coming after B.O.O. In addition to Murray, also joining the cast is Jennifer Coolidge and Octavia Spencer.

The man behind 2008's animated hit 'Igor' is writer/director Anthony Leondis and his latest animated project has just scored the voice of a very funny lady. Melissa McCarthy (below) will lend her vocal talents to upcoming DreamWorks Animation project 'B.O.O. (Bureau Of Otherworldly Operations)'. The film based on an original idea by Leondis which he will also helm and will see Seth Rogen ('This is the End') play the lead role who partners McCarthy's character Watts in a 'super secret government agency dedicated to protecting humans from evil hauntings'. Both Rogen and McCarthy's characters are also in fact ghosts themselves - hmmm sounds very much like another project arriving next month? R.I.P.D. anyone!? This movie, however, is one hell of a long way off and won't see the light of day until 5 June 2015....

With 20th Century Fox recently picking up the distribution duties for DreamWorks Animation's films (following a profitable relationship with Paramount Pictures that ended somewhat sourly), it was all but a matter of time before the studio announced (via Hollywood Reporter) a fuller slate of movies for the partnership, but this is unprecedented – an ambitious, 12-movie schedule that includes three and sometimes four movies a year, including not one but two "How to Train Your Dragon" sequels and a new paranormal-themed movie starring Seth Rogen. Of the new announcements, "B.O.O: Bureau of Otherworldly Operations" is probably the most high-profile. Starring Rogen, a DreamWorks Animation favorite who has provided voices for "Shrek the Third," "Kung Fu Panda," "Monsters vs. Aliens," "and "Kung Fu Panda 2," the movie is directed by Tony Leondis (who directed the iffy animated film "Igor," which proved...

To have one project waiting for release should be sort of a big deal. Putting twelve out into our line of sight, however, isn’t the same ballpark (it ain’t the same league, man — it ain’t even the same f*ckin’ sport), which only makes the recent merger between DreamWorks Animation and Fox all the more a big deal. There are an innumerable number of things to be done with this transition on either company’s part, a fact reflected by both having set a schedule which will see three films coming each year — in the case of 2015, we’ll even get four.
This is not a group of people who deal in surprises, however, so it’s refreshing to hear them announce a project that isn’t another sequel or spin-off — in this case, a Seth Rogen-starrer entitled Bureau of Otherworldly Operations, which Tony Leondis (Igor...
