sharp-witted mockumentary from Flanders
myriamlenys7 July 2017
Bart De Pauw is a mediocre actor who lives in the past. He has two brothers : Tom, an unpleasant small-time crook, and Benny, a fat, sensitive and deeply insecure teenager (or possibly perpetual teenager ?). Benny is the nicest one of the bunch, although one cannot shake the suspicion that he knows just how very doe-eyed and cuddly he is. One day Bart has an idea : why not star in a documentary based on his brilliant career, his delightful family, his spacious villa, his loving neighbors and his general awesomeness ? The camera crew, of course, films something else entirely.

This is the concept behind "Het geslacht De Pauw", an unusually clever comedy series about celebrities, pseudo-celebrities and the fools who want to adore, obey, study and/or abuse them. Fact and fiction are mixed in a heady satirical brew and the writing is very adroit indeed.

Many of the performances are excellent. "Tom" for instance is a superb comic creation : a rat-faced weasel who insults inoffensive passers-by, transports dubious packages and cheats on his angelic girl-friend (in later episodes, his angelic wife) as if infidelity were going out of business.

All in all, a fine series.

Real or fantasy
hotedan11 December 2005
Is this real, or is it fantasy, this is a question some people may have asked about this show when first viewed on "TV 1". Of course, it's fantasy, coming out of the brain op Bart De Pauw, this series was a welcome new breath of air in the Flemish TV scene. This is not another stupid reality series (althoug it advertises to be), this is a wonderful - I know my own failures - some sort of trademark of Bart De Pauw - series that always is funny and surprising, unlike the many 'crap' 'reality' things that are terrorizing our screens these days. It's a shame that the series has seem to come to an end, but then again, maybe it's best to end while on top of things. This series provided good fun, some criticism on the current world (in a funny way) and lots of television view fun. I hope that we can hear from Bart in a positive way again in the distant future again. (Love that 'Buiten de zone' (just look for it on the internet), hope to get it on DVD some day, one can only hope...)

"Het Geslacht De Pauw" is an excellent parody on "The Pfaffs", a reality soap about the famous Belgian keeper Jean-Marie Pfaff and his family.

Bart De Pauw plays himself as an exuberant, arrogant and self-centered celebrity that makes the viewers feel vicarious shame and a even little hate towards him. Many viewers have thought and some still think this show is a correct reproduction of Bart De Pauw's life, which proves the wonderful acting by Bart and his so called family members, such as Tom Waes and Maaike Cafmeyer. This show is satirical, holds a mirror in front of our society and is without a doubt hilarious. The second series proved that there was still a lot to be parodied in the world of reality TV, and gives us beautiful moments and more unforgettable humour. Splendid!
