After accidentally revealing the news to a handful of trade publications on earlier this week, Weigel Broadcasting and Warner Bros Discovery (Wbd) formally announced the forthcoming launch of their classic cartoon television network MeTV Toons on Thursday.
The channel will debut in June on broadcast stations across the country and on free, ad-supported streaming television platforms, and will include dozens of classic animated series like “Tom & Jerry,” “The Flintstones,” “Johnny Quest” and “Scooby-Doo.”
MeTV Toons builds off a Saturday morning cartoon block that has aired on Weigel-owned MeTV for several years now, which consisted primarily of animated shows from Warner Bros. MeTV Toons will expand on this idea by incorporating other Warner Bros series into the mix, along with shows from Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Sony’s Columbia Pictures and others.

In the 2022-2023 Broadway season, the first full season since theaters were closed due to the pandemic, audience numbers were down by 17 percent from 2018-2019, according to a study released Monday by the Broadway League.
This came as the season included high-grossing shows, such as Sweeney Todd, starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford and Funny Girl starring Lea Michele. That said, 2018-2019 was a record year for Broadway attendance and grosses. And the audience that returned after the theatrical shutdown was younger and more diverse.
As has been noted by members in the industry, suburban theatergoers, which had been a key audience segment, have been slow to return post-pandemic, with 14 percent of overall admissions coming from this segment in the 2022-2023 season, marking the lowest number on record in 23 years of the survey.

While Broadway shows are attracting a more racially diverse audience and tourism from outside the U.S. is fairly strong, the New York theater industry has been slow to recover from Covid-19: Admissions totaling 12.3 million for the 2022-23 were nearly 17% lower than the record-breaking pre-pandemic levels of the 2018-19 season.
The good news: Broadway audiences were more diverse than ever last season, with 29% of attendees identifying themselves as Black, Indigenous or People of Color. The figure compares with 26% in the 2018-19 season.
The numbers are included in the Broadway League’s latest annual demographics report, released today.
A comprehensive analysis of the theatergoers who attended Broadway shows during the 2022-23 season, the report covers the first complete season since Broadway reopened in September 2021 following the 18-month industry-wide pandemic shutdown. The League’s 23rd annual report is its first since the 2018-19 season.

Tony winner Kenny Leon will direct a new Broadway production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town in the fall of 2024, the first revival of the classic play since the 2002 production that starred Paul Newman as the stage manager.
The production dates, cast, and venue will be announced at a later date.
Leon’s many Broadway directing credits include Ohio State Murders, Topdog/Underdog, A Soldier’s Play, American Son and the current Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch starring Leslie Odom Jr. at The Music Box Theatre. He won the 2014 Tony for Best Direction for A Raisin in the Sun starring Denzel Washington, Sophie Okonedo, Latanya Richardson Jackson and Anika Noni Rose.

“Segregation is a ridiculous institution and it makes decent people do ridiculous things,” playwright, actor-director, and activist Ossie Davis told the New York Times on September 24, 1961, four days before his play Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch opened on Broadway, co-starring himself and his wife, Ruby Dee. “Maybe if they can be made to laugh at it they can see how absurd it is.”
Especially on a Great White Way where actors played predominantly to white audiences that had seen few comedies by Black playwrights, let alone satires on segregation, Purlie Victorious must have been a jolting event. Though the play, which ran for nearly eight months on Broadway, begat a film adaptation in 1963 (Gone Are the Days!) and the successful musical Purlie in 1970, Davis’s comedy about an aggrieved “self-made minister” righteously “disembezzling” a racist plantation owner has largely faded from popular memory.

When Is Blue Lock Chapter 229 Coming? Well, the next chapter of Blue Lock, that is Chapter 229, is all set to release sometime in August 2023. Also, there is a piece of good news for fans as there won’t be any breaks, so the new chapter will arrive just as planned.
To read it, you can get a copy of Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine, either in print or digitally.
In the last chapter, Shoei Barou found himself facing tough opponents in the form of Yoichi Isagi and Michael Kaiser from Bastard Munchen.
Since these two players were in his way, Barou took a brave shot at the goal. This shot turned into a bit of a gamble as it was risky. Snuffy and Noa were part of this action too.
Also, Snuffy managed to block Noa’s move toward the ball, which helped the shot go straight into the goal.

On Sunday night, Broadway honored the best live theater of the year at the 76th annual Tony Awards.
At a time of the ongoing Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike, it was a possibility that the ceremony would not happen this year, but the WGA and the Tony Awards’ organizers reached an agreement where the show would not be picketed and the writers would not work on the telecast. The previous time this occurred was in 1988 when Phantom of the Opera and Into the Woods competed for Best Musical.
The Tonys was the first major ceremony to take place amid the current writers’ strike. While other awards shows need a host and numerous presenters to say written remarks about the competitors and provide good ratings, the Tonys already have a built-in fan base that only requires around a dozen performances and winners’ speeches to succeed.

Winners at Sunday night’s Tony Awards were quick to express support for the WGA and striking writers, but the awards ceremony itself, broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+, might well have been at cross-purposes. The harsh truth is, the show didn’t seem to suffer much at all.
No scripted banter, acceptance speeches kept to a minimum and a charming and seemingly off-the-cuff hosting performance by Ariana DeBose all made for a terrific evening that showcased Broadway in just the right light. Even the new venue — new for the Tonys, that is — turned in a star performance: The United Palace in New York City’s Washington Heights looked absolutely gorgeous.

Going into the 76th annual awards, Some Like It Hot led the pack of musicals with a whopping 13 nominations, including one for Best New Musical. But Kimberly Akimbo ultimately won the top prize, in addition to other top honors for both its lead and supporting actress. As far as plays go,...

New location? No script? No rehearsal? No sweat.
Welcome to the 2023 Tony Awards, a show with an extra jolt of electricity this time due to the Hollywood writers’ strike.
Unpredictability has been inserted into what is usually an upbeat, safe and chummy night. The strike has left Broadway’s biggest night without a script, in a new venue far from the theatre district.
A 1 1/2-hour pre-show on Pluto TV from 6:30-8 p.m. Eastern, hosted by Julianne Hough and Skylar Astin, will then throw to the three-hour main event led by Ariana DeBose on CBS and Paramount+ starting at 8 p.m. Eastern.
A total of 26 Tony Awards will be handed out Sunday for a season that had 40 new productions — 15 musicals, 24 plays and one special engagement during the first post-pandemic full season.

To Washington Heights we go. The Tony Awards head to a new venue this year, the United Palace, but the excitement of honoring the year’s best in theater is the same as ever. If, like me, you can’t wait for Sunday night’s event to begin, that’s where math can come in.
Similar to the Oscars, I’ve built a mathematical model to predict the Tonys in all 26 categories, based on a combination of which categories a show is nominated in, the aggregated predictions of various Broadway critics, and the results of the Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Drama League Awards. The model is trained on historical Tony Awards data over the past quarter-century — inputs that have done a better job of predicting each category in the past get more weight in this year’s predictions. Has there ever been a less predictable Tony Awards?
Just a few weeks ago there were doubts that a televised ceremony would even happen, due to the ongoing WGA strike. That problem proved to be just a speed bump: The guild agreed not to picket the show, but the show will include no scripts, no pre-written introductions or podium banter. There will be the usual musical numbers from the nominated shows — the heart of the ceremony — as well as some additional performances, tributes to John Kander and Joel Grey, the traditional In Memoriam segment and, well, we’ll all just have to wait and see for the rest.

But the usual Will Wins/Should Wins are predictions of a different sort, and no strike or toxic-looking orange sky over New York City can stop those speculations. So here we go. Deadline’s 2023 Tony Awards Predictions,...

Suzan-Lori Parks’ acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize-winning play Topdog/Underdog debuted Off Broadway in 2001, so it’s a safe bet that a significant portion of the audience at last fall’s limited engagement Broadway revival knew how things would end for the brothers Booth and Lincoln. Those character names alone leave little room for uncertainty.
And yet the gunshot that brings the dark comedy to a close drew gasps. The power to surprise after all these years was made clear, night after night, by the two-man cast of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and Corey Hawkins under the direction of Kenny Leon. If you didn’t get enough Krypto in DC League of Super-Pets, hold onto your leash because James Gunn is bringing the Man of Steel’s loyal pooch back for Superman: Legacy. During an interview with the Toronto Sun, longtime collaborators James Gunn and Chris Pratt spoke about their new film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While discussing the latest exploits of Star-Lord and his merry band of a-holes, Gunn teased that Krypto would appear in his upcoming Superman film, Superman: Legacy.
While discussing other ways the dynamic duo could work together, Gunn joked that Pratt could play Krypto in Superman: Legacy. “I was hoping I could cast you as Krypto… the Superdog,” Gunn told Pratt. “But you’d have to be like Maria, and you’d have to do motion capture on set, and walk around on your hands and knees.” Pratt, always ready to lean into a bit,...

Electronic musician and producer Rp Boo was already in his 40s when his debut album, Legacy, dropped in 2013, preceded by more than a decade of singles which helped establish Chicago’s footwork genre. Legacy Volume 2 continues the curation of his output from that period, gathering previously unreleased tracks recorded between 2002 and 2007.
Rather than using digital software, Boo constructs his music entirely with old-fashioned equipment: a Roland drum machine and Akai Mpc sampler. Some of the samples are immediately recognizable: “UnderD-Stat” bites the theme from the ’60s animated TV series Underdog, while “Heavy Heat” uses the same horns, originally taken from Ifukube Akira’s theme from Godzilla vs. Mothra, as Pharoahe Monch’s 1999 classic “Simon Says.”
Central to Boo’s process is his merging of samples in dense and abrasive ways, with individual sounds having an exponential effect. Instead of sticking to a steady rhythm during each track, Boo loops vocal...

“Out of all the Tony categories this season, this could be the most complicated,” notes Sam Eckmann about the race for the top Broadway honor of Best Play. It’s a sentiment we share about Best Play Revival, too, as we discuss our final predictions for the upcoming 76th Tony Awards nominations. All told, 23 productions will contend for slots in categories honoring the best dramatic works of the year, which will be announced on May 2. Watch the full video slugfest above.
Ironically, even with an embarrassment of riches of shows from which to predict the top two categories, Sam and I have identical lineups. The contest for Best Play Revival at this year’s Tony Awards is shaping up to be a true nail-biter, even in the nominations round of voting. Five of the eligible productions — “A Doll’s House,” “Death of a Salesman,” “Ohio State Murders,” “The Piano Lesson,” and “Topdog/Underdog” — all opened to excellent reviews, while a sixth contender, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window,” just announced its opening on the last day of eligibility.
Of these six productions, four will earn nominations. Four of the six have also already closed, which would seem to give an advantage to “A Doll’s House” and “Sidney Brustein’s Window,” both of which will run through the Tony voting period. Do those two productions thus have an advantage in this top race? How often does a shuttered production actually win Best Revival?

Apparently, it’s never too late to open a show on Broadway. With just 23 days left until the eligibility cutoff for the 2023 Tony Awards, “The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window” has just announced a Broadway transfer. The production will begin performances on April 25, with an opening night of April 27 at the James Earl Jones Theatre. The limited run will last just 80 performances, through July 2. This will officially make the play the final eligible production in the 2022-2023 Broadway season, throwing chaos into many Tony races.
The play is a political drama from the late Lorraine Hansberry which recently ended a run Off-Broadway at the Brooklyn Academy of Music (Bam). Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) and Oscar Isaac (“Scenes From a Marriage”) will reprise their starring roles in the Broadway mounting. This will mark Isaac’s Broadway debut, though he has numerous New York theater credits to his name,...

Seven years ago, pioneering film and TV producer Debra Martin Chase was thinking about leaving Hollywood.
The first Black woman to ink an overall deal at any studio, she’d produced such genre-defining hits as “The Princess Diaries,” “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” and “Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella.” While getting projects about women and people of color off the ground was never easy, suddenly prospects were stagnant.
“It was at a point where Hollywood just wasn’t interested,” she tells Variety, reflecting on the career crossroads from the living room of her apartment in New York, where she lives while her popular CBS series “The Equalizer” is in production. “You’d talk to people — particularly white men — and their eyes would just glaze over.”
As Martin Chase approached 30 years in the business, her passion was slipping away. She thought, “Maybe this is the universe’s way of telling me:...

A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently 11 productions of plays set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each play as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Death of a Salesman”
In the fifth Broadway revival of Arthur Miller’s 1949 drama, Willy Loman is a traveling salesman whose illusions of picture-perfect business and family life cave in on him. He and his family are caught up in the pressures and delusions of living the American dream.
The original production directed by Elia Kazan won six Tony Awards (including Best Play) and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. This staging follows a successful run on London’s West End back in 2019, where it received five Laurence Olivier...

Even with a Covid-shortened performance schedule, Lea Michele’s star turn in Funny Girl was serious business last week, with box office for the musical revival more than doubling from the previous week.
For the week ending September 11 — Michele’s first week as Fanny Brice — Funny Girl grossed 1,639,212, a dramatic upturn from the previous week’s 659,874 and a significant improvement over even the 1.3 million high averages of original star Beanie Feldstein’s early weeks last spring.
‘Funny Girl’: Lea Michele Gets Four Standing Ovations – By Intermission; Jonathan Groff, Ryan Murphy Among The Gleeful Crowd
Next week’s grosses report should provide yet another facet to Michele’s box office impact: She’s out of the production this week due to a positive Covid test. Deadline hears there were a significant number of ticket exchange requests last weekend.
Still, even with Michele’s curtailed performance schedule, Funny Girl filled 96 of its seats for the week, compared to the 70-80ish percentages of recent weeks.
In fact, Funny Girl was one of few Broadway shows that didn’t take a big, post-Labor Day Holiday hit last week. Total grosses for the 19 shows on the boards totaled 20,638,554, a 19 drop from the previous tourist-heavy week. The drop in receipts also reflects a slightly slimmer roster: 19 shows compared with the previous week’s 21 – and one of the missing was the mega-bucks earner The Music Man, on a scheduled hiatus while star Hugh Jackman makes the film festival rounds with Florian Zeller’s The Son. (The other now-gone show was Billy Crystal’s Mr. Saturday Night.)
Producers for The Music Man announced today that the show will close this January 1 with Jackman’s departure.
Other shows that did well last week were a couple of about-to-close productions: Come From Away, which closes October 2, filled 99 of its seats for a 781,173 take, while Dear Evan Hansen, closing September 18, was a sellout, grossing 1,050,167.
Other top earners in the 1M+ range were Aladdin, Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Mj, Moulin Rouge, Six, The Lion King and Wicked. Into the Woods, now with a stellar replacement cast, grossed 1,044,801, a noticeable drop from the previous week’s 1.8M.
Coming weeks will see significant activity on the roster: September alone will see previews begin for Cost of Living, Leopoldstadt, 1776, Death of a Salesman, The Piano Lesson and Topdog/Underdog, with more to come later this fall.
Season to date, Broadway has grossed 449,823,161, with total attendance of 3,501,670 at about 86 of capacity.
The 19 productions reporting figures on Broadway last week were Aladdin, Beetlejuice, The Book of Mormon, Chicago, Come From Away, Dear Evan Hansen, Funny Girl, Hadestown, Hamilton, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, Into the Woods, The Kite Runner, The Lion King, Mj, Moulin Rouge!, The Phantom of the Opera, Six, A Strange Loop and Wicked.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has compared acting in the Aquaman movies to “clown work”, expressing a desire to balance superhero fare with more serious roles.
Abdul-Mateen, who plays David Kane/Manta alongside Aquaman lead Jason Momoa in the DC franchise films, has also appeared in Aaron Sorkin’s The Trial of the Chicago 7, Emmy-winning HBO series Watchmen, The Matrix Resurrections, and Nia DaCosta’s Candyman reboot since making his debut in Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix drama seriesThe Get Down in 2016.
In a new interview, Abdul-Mateen talked about the difference between working on a project like Aquaman and his forthcoming role in Pulitzer Prize-winning Suzan Lori Parks’s play Topdog/Underdog on Broadway later this year.
On his acting process, the 36-year-old actor told Vulture: “Everything should be about getting to the truth.
“But sometimes you got to know which movie or genre you’re in,” he continued. “Something like Aquaman,...

At 15, Christina Ricci appeared in a PG-13 comedy called Now and Then, in which four middle-aged best friends meet up to reflect on their teenage selves. Nearly 30 years later, Showtime’s Yellowjackets is that film’s hard-r evil twin, in which the fortysomething members of a New Jersey school’s female football team are haunted by memories of a traumatic plane crash that left them stranded when they were kids. It’s hard to pick a single performance from a terrific ensemble, but Ricci’s portrayal of the twisted Misty Quigley, played in flashback by Sammi Hanratty, is a standout in a series that shocks and surprises.
Deadline: Why did you want to want to do Yellowjackets?
Christina Ricci: I loved the idea of it — the premise in general. But then I read the pilot script and the only scene I had in the whole episode was such an incredibly well written,...
