a true edge-of-your-seat/holding your breath thriller

A young man, working on a roofing job at an old house, finds the people there somewhat strange. A man who lives there evidently has some kind of problems & eventually kills himself in the bath after taking pills. A mysterious envelope falls into the young man's hands that contains a train ticket & a destination, and not knowing where he's going or what he's getting into, he makes the journey, only to find himself in some kind of twisted game. The young man realizes that he has taken the place of the man that killed himself & perhaps now has a better understanding of why the poor man was so messed up. He's greeted with suspicion, being a newcomer, but the attitude is that there's now no going back. The game is obviously illegal, yet lots of people have come to bet on it. The game consists of men standing in a circle with guns, pointing their gun (first with one bullet, then with more) at the man in front of them, and when a light bulb is turned on they are all to fire, which results in at least a few men being killed. Kind of like a combination of Russian Roulette & musical chairs, minus the music. Number 13, the young man, seems to be blessed with good luck and manages to hold his own, although he's terrified. This is a thriller that will literally have you on the edge of your seat, waiting....holding your breath. It's not especially graphic, and it's in black & white, which lends it a rather gritty atmosphere. There's also a twist ending that is rather depressing but not entirely unexpected. An amazing film & much better than I had expected, highly recommended. 9 out of 10.
