Redhead Caleb Landry Jones got lucky on his first audition, at age 17. His father took a day off from work and drove him from Garland, Texas, to Dallas for a try-out, then to Austin for a callback with the Coen brothers, for a role as “the boy on the bike” in eventual Best Picture Oscar-winner “No Country for Old Men” (2007). Little did Jones know, as he launched his acting career, that he would join the ensemble on “X-Men: First Class” (2011) or win Best Actor at Cannes for playing a mass murderer in “Nitram” (2021), or that one critic would dub him “a menacing oddball character actor.”
When I read that quote to Jones over Zoom, he paused for a moment and said, “That sounds Ok to me. I heard ‘actor,’ so that sounded good.”
The Coens did Jones a huge favor, he said. “Javier Bardem. Not a bad person to see...

Since the inception of the Academy Awards, the U.S.-based organization behind them has always strived to honor worldwide film achievements. Their extensive roster of competitive acting winners alone consists of artists from 30 unique countries, three of which first gained representation during the 2020s. The last full decade’s worth of triumphant performers hail from eight countries, while 42.1% of the individual actors nominated during that time originate from outside of America.
The academy’s history of recognizing acting talent on a global scale dates all the way back to the inaugural Oscars ceremony in 1929, when Swiss-born Emil Jannings (who was of German and American parentage) won Best Actor for his work in both “The Last Command” and “The Way of All Flesh.” Over the next three years, the Best Actress prize was exclusively awarded to Canadians: Mary Pickford (“Coquette”), Norma Shearer (“The Divorcee”), and Marie Dressler (“Min and Bill...

Josh Brolin is gearing up for a huge 2024 thanks to his impressive credits. The release of Outer Range season 2, a sci-fi neo-Western, is expected to be a major success for Brolin, who is just coming off Dune 2. Brolin's return to television after a 20-year gap makes Outer Range so significant that the series' sophomore season will mark the actor's directorial debut.
Thanks in large part to Outer Range season 2's imminent premiere, 2024 is shaping up to be a massive year for actor Josh Brolin. After gaining acclaim for 1985's The Goonies, Brolin had a much-deserved resurgence in the mid-2000s by landing parts in the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men and Gus Van Sant's Milk, the latter of which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. Since then, Brolin has gone on to work with other acclaimed filmmakers, including Paul Thomas Anderson (Inherent...

It’s hard to put into words the kind of the disappointment that comes with realising that one of your favourite filmmakers has made a truly terrible movie. That realisation hit me approximately 10 minutes into Drive-Away Dolls, the new film by one half of acclaimed filmmaking duo The Coen Brothers.
Alongside his brother Joel, Ethan Coen has given us more than 4 decades of brilliant films ranging from quirky black comedies – A Serious Man, Hail, Caesar!, Inside Llewyn Davis – to beautifully devised crime capers – Blood Simple, No Country for Old Men and True Grit being just a few – but recently the prolific brothers took a break from working together. This resulted in Joel Coen’s multi-awarded nominated The Tragedy of Macbeth in 2021, and the soon to be released chaotic lesbian sexploitation comedy Drive-Away Dolls from his brother Ethan.

Geraldine Viswanathan lends a quiet seriousness to her role that anchors this otherwise flimsy, silly story
Here is a saucy, silly, queer road-movie caper from director Ethan Coen and his partner, co-writer and co-producer Tricia Cooke; it’s Coen’s second film without his brother, Joel, following his Jerry Lee Lewis documentary in 2022. Drive-Away Dolls is a flimsy lark wrapped up smartly and economically in 84 minutes with a perfunctory (and cheerfully nonsensical) MacGuffiny premise that makes it look like a Xerox of Coen brothers classics such as No Country For Old Men or Fargo. Lead player Margaret Qualley’s twangy down-home accent is moreover something that could have been re-thought in rehearsal. But it rattles along watchably enough. Geraldine Viswanathan nicely underplays her part and Beanie Feldstein delivers the gags with resounding gusto. There’s a nice sprinkling of A-lister cameos, including Colman Domingo, who I wished had been in the action a bit more.

Woody Harrelson's new thriller "Lips Like Sugar" flips his role in "Natural Born Killers." Harrelson plays a homicide detective alongside Owen Wilson in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics setting. The film tackles a potential serial killer case and involves Juliette Lewis in a different role from "Natural Born Killers."
Woody Harrelson is starring in a new thriller movie, and this project is perfectly flipping his role in one of the most controversial Quentin Tarantino stories. Woody Harrelson is one of the most respected actors of his generation, having shown his acting range in a variety of movies and TV shows. Harrelson made his big screen debut as an extra in 1978’s Harper Valley PTA, but rose to fame with his role as Woody Boyd in the TV series Cheers. Harrelson’s first box-office hit was the 1992 sports comedy White Men Can’t Jump, after which he starred in all types of movies.

Beanie Feldstein is happy to have solidified herself alongside the select few who can claim the status of a “Coen Cop.” The actress’s role in Ethan Coen’s solo directorial debut, Drive-Away Dolls, puts her on par with Frances McDormand’s Marge Gunderson of Fargo fame, Tommy Lee Jones’ No Country for Old Men sheriff Ed Tom Bell, and True Grit’s Deputy U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) and Texas Ranger Laboeuf (Matt Damon). Launching herself onto the performance pedestal of all the law enforcement actors who came before her, Feldstein’s portrayal of Sukie fully lives up to the hype and nearly steals the spotlight from the movie’s leading characters. In an exclusive to Collider behind-the-scenes clip to celebrate the film’s March 12 arrival on demand, Feldstein and her peers talk about her no-nonsense role and how she fully grabbed the bull by the horns and refused to let go.

The movies, if I dare say it, used to hold us together. They were a shared dream — which is why I wanted to become a film critic, not a poetry critic. The mass mythology of movies felt singular, intoxicating, enveloping, cathartic. And the Oscars have always been part of that. In embracing the world of movies, they seemed to embrace the whole world, period.
But less so recently. We live in a splintered time, with everything divided into niches, clubs, cults, and opposing sides that don’t speak to each other. When it comes to entertainment, there are so many options that it now feels like too many. Yet the staggering success of “Oppenheimer” reminded us of how all that could come back together. A subject of transcendent importance. A drama of stunning ambition and audacity. And an audience of staggering size, enthralled around the globe. That’s more than just success.

Andrea Bocelli performed a rendition of the song “Time to Say Goodbye” with his son Matteo Bocelli to accompany the Academy’s annual obituary section. Perhaps mindful of previous years, in which eagle-eyed viewers have jumped on omissions, this year’s “In Memoriam” — which began with footage of the recently deceased Russian opposition leader and subject of last year’s winning documentary Navalny — seemed comprehensive but at the same time not enough.

Film fans would certainly be denied a number of all-time classics if Hollywood simply refused to ever approach source material considered “unadaptable” for potential projects. While it once seemed completely improbable that an adaptation could do justice to such acclaimed books as The Lord of the Rings, Trainspotting, Dune, No Country For Old Men, and A Clockwork Orange among many others, talented filmmakers ended up making the right changes needed to give the material a compelling cinematic quality. Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial serial killer satire American Psycho is just another one of those seemingly “unadaptable” novels that was turned into a modern classic, but the process of getting the film to theaters was rather tumultuous. Given how much controversy the source material had already received for its incendiary content, American Psycho had to cut down a scene to avoid being handed an Nc-17 rating from the Motion Pictures Association of America.

For the first half of this weekend's new episode of "Saturday Night Live," hosted by "No Country for Old Men" and "Dune" star Josh Brolin, I couldn't stop trying to pinpoint what other performer he was reminding me of, even across a few different sketches. At first, I thought it might have been former "SNL" cast member Al Franken, specifically because of the slightly effeminate way he was portraying a couple of characters. Then it hit me: Josh Brolin rich, deep voice and his slightly off-kilter delivery style felt like the offspring of John Malkovich. Because whenever the frequently villainous John Malkovich is speaking, he's pretty much always talking like John Malkovich. There might be a slight accent every now and then, but it's pretty much always Malkovich being Malkovich. And the same can be said for Josh Brolin.

We Oscarologists (ridiculous name) spend our time trying to read certain tea leaves to figure out what a potential Best Picture winner typically needs to win in order to take home the Oscars’ top prize. Best Director was once the most important category to excel in. Then it was Best Editing that we thought a Best Picture hopeful needed to check off. Then, recently, the combination of a writing Oscar and an acting win has proven to be a powerful one for eventual Best Picture winners. But what do the stats say? Oscars 2024: best picture nominees – reviews, awards and where to watch
If the best picture Oscar was handed out to the film that elicited the warmest collective glow from cinemagoers, bookmakers would have long since stopped accepting bets on The Holdovers. Does anyone anywhere actively dislike Alexander Payne’s boarding school drama? If they do they’re keeping very quiet. It’s a film that, in its dopamine hit of warm nostalgia, seems pretty much backlash proof.
Curiously though, it’s that same quality that, for some, will mean that The Holdovers wouldn’t be a deserving best picture winner. Film history, after all, doesn’t like to reward the feelgood. Think of some of the most celebrated Oscar winners and they tend to be heavy,...

Brolin’s career has been through the wringer, but he did not give up, and he is now reaping the rewards for his persistence. His career took a bit of a nosedive, but the one film that helped him get back on track was No Country for Old Men. The film holds a special place in Brolin’s heart, and even the author of the book, Cormac McCarthy, honored him in a special way.
Josh Brolin has starred in some of the biggest film franchises of all time. Drive-Away Dolls is the latest film from director Ethan Coen of the Coen Brothers fame. The movie stars Margaret Qualley and Geraldine Viswanathan as Jamie and Marian respectively, two lesbian friends who go on a road trip to Flordia after they have found themselves at crossroads in their life. Due to a mistake at a car company they end up in possession of a vehicle with briefcase filled with secret contents that find themselves being pursued by a group of mobsters. Coen wrote the script with his wife, Tricia Cooke.
Despite the name Ethan Coen, his brother Joel Coen is not involved with the movie. Drive-Away Dolls might look like other Coen Brothers movies like Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski or Burn After Reading but it is notably not a Coen Brother's movie. Why does the newly released film tell us about the brothers work together and how they work apart?...

Javier Bardem is currently making headlines for his role of Stilgar in Dune: Part Two. The Denis Villeneuve directorial has been getting rave reviews with 94% on the Tomatometer. And one of the positives on the movie is how Bardem plays the fanatic leader of the Fremen, mentoring Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides. But with as menacing and zealous his character is in the movie, he is quite the opposite in real life.
Javier Bardem in Dune: Part Two
Bardem broke into the silver screen early on when he was only six years old. Coming from a family that has long been part of the movie industry in Spain, and being the son of the popular Spanish actress, Pilar Bardem, the Skyfall actor initially did not want to become an actor. It wasn’t until his lead role Bigas Luna’s 1992 directorial film, Jamón Jamón, that he started taking acting more seriously.

Josh Brolin does not hold back in expressing his disdain for the movie "Jonah Hex," calling it a "sh**** f****** movie." "Jonah Hex" was a forgettable DC movie with a disappointing 12% on Rotten Tomatoes, highlighting Brolin's disappointment in the project. Despite the negative reception, there is potential for a Jonah Hex comeback in the Dcu, as the scarred cowboy bounty hunter deserves another shot at adaptation.

Steven Spielberg is one of the most respected and talented people to have ever existed in the film industry. Having the knowledge of a legend in cinema, a lot can be learned from him. Many would give a lot to get an opportunity to ask the filmmaker just one question. But of course, very few get such a chance.

Josh Brolin has had an interesting career over the years. His breakthrough role came with the 1985 adventure comedy film Goonies. In the 2000s, he gained prominence playing significant roles in acclaimed films such as No Country For Old Men and Milk. The 2010s was a great decade for Brolin as he tasted huge commercial success with the last two Avengers films and Deadpool 2.

Drive-Away Dolls' Rotten Tomatoes Score Is A Harsh Reality Check After Breaking 20-Year Coens Streak
Drive-Away Dolls breaks Coen Brothers' 20-year streak, diverts from critical acclaim. Solo Coen projects receive mixed receptions, while partnership has almost guaranteed success. Comedy-heavy Coen Brothers' films tend to have their lowest Rotten Tomatoes scores.
Ethan Coen's latest film, Drive-Away Dolls, has received a mixed critical reception, breaking a 20-year streak from the Coen Brothers. Known for their consistent excellence in making compelling original films since the 1980s, the Coens have become known as some of the most accomplished contemporary filmmakers. They've won an Academy Award for Best Picture for No Country For Old Men and directed several other cult classics like The Big Lebowski and Blood Simple. After The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 2018, the brothers parted ways to work on separate projects.
The Coen Brothers together deserve to be mentioned among the best directors of all time, though their merits individually are too few to argue for.

Filming the pit bull scene in No Country for Old Men was intense, even though the trained dog didn't want to chase Josh Brolin. Brolin had to use a chew toy hidden in his pants to make the pit bull continue attacking him in the water during the scene. Despite the dangerous situation, the Coen Brothers seemed indifferent to Brolin's discomfort, laughing while he struggled.
No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin reveals how the movie's pit bull scene almost went very wrong (and the Coens didn't care). The Coen Brothers’ 2007 Oscar-winner stars Brolin as Llewelyn Moss, a man who thinks he’s hit the jackpot after discovering a suitcase of money at the aftermath of a drug deal gone wrong, but lives to regret his snap decision to keep the loot. Using the genre of a neo-Western, the Coen brothers' No Country for Old Men encapsulates, through its three main characters, the feeling of emptiness and hammers home the point its title so curtly dictates. Exemplifying the wonder for purpose and meaning of man's existence, the Western noir film instead makes its viewers wallow in their own dread, showing that the world is going too fast for them to keep up no matter how hard they try. In the bleakness of its storytelling and its utter lack of a score, Joel and Ethan Coen blast the audience with this painful truth — life is no more than a frustrating endeavor that leaves these characters no choice but to traverse its meaninglessness. No Country for Old Men's characters force the viewers to revel in the mere absurdity of both the film and their everyday lives. This story leaves a void inside their hearts...

This past weekend was sort of the calm before the storm at the box office, with "Bob Marley: One Love" sort of holding it down until "Dune: Part Two" arrives to help rescue 2024's abysmal ticket sales thus far. But a couple of new movies did hit theaters, with "Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba—To the Hashira Training" leading the way and maintaining the trend of anime finding its audience in theaters. Unfortunately, the weekend's other big new release, Ethan Coen's "Drive-Away Dolls," didn't fare nearly as well and now ranks as one of the year's early theatrical disappointments.
The film earned just $2.4 million in its debut, placing eighth on the charts just behind "Wonka" ($2.45 million), a film in its 11th weekend, and just ahead of "The Beekeeper" ($1.9 million), a film in its seventh weekend. The Focus Feature release is essentially dead on arrival as the next few weeks are going to be very busy,...

The movie is the first solo narrative feature from director Ethan Coen, who is best known for co-directing with his brother Joel. The movie opened below both new movies and holdover titles in a relatively quiet box office weekend.

Academy Award winners don't always bring in big bucks, as seen with Best Picture winners Cimarron, Chariots of Fire, and The Last Emperor. Some Oscar winners like Crash, No Country for Old Men, and The Hurt Locker, although acclaimed, struggled financially at the box office. Even Best Picture winners like The Artist, Birdman, Moonlight, and Coda didn't rake in huge profits, showcasing the divide between awards and box office success.
The Academy Awards may bestow films with the most sought-after accolades in the industry, but that doesn't always mean the movie is a financial success. Hollywood and the rest of the world have several different organizations that are designed to give recognition and praise to the best and brightest movies ever made. However, the public has a slightly different system for showing their affection and admiration for movies, which is arguably more important; the box office. Audiences pay with their...

In what is shaping up to be a muted weekend at the box office, Sony and Crunchyroll’s “Demon Slayer Kimetsu no Yaiba -To the Hashira Training” earned $1.8 million in Thursday previews, while Lionsgate and Kingdom Story Company’s inspirational drama “Ordinary Angels” picked up a paltry $285,000.
The weekend’s other new release, Focus Features’ comedic thriller “Drive-Away Dolls,” didn’t report preview grosses, which does not augur well for its commercial prospects. Despite the influx of movies, “Bob Marley: One Love” is expected to retain its spot at No. 1 after scoring an impressive $28.6 million over last weekend and $52 million through the Presidents holiday frame. “Bob Marley” should earn between $12 million to $14 million in its sophomore outing.
“To the Hashira Training” is projected to earn roughly $10 million, which would be on par with its predecessor, 2023’s anime adventure “Demon Slayer: To the Swordsmith Village,” which earned $10.1 million in first weekend.

A road trip. A mix-up. A fast-talking hero, prone to tossing off bewilderingly verbose sentences. Some criminals who run the gamut from eccentric to psychotic to painfully inept. (Sometimes, they’re all three at once.) Dangerously sudden violence. Dangerously dark humor. Dangerously outrageous hairdos. The feeling that you’re watching a vintage film noir story run through a Looney Tunes filter. You are in the presence of a Coen brothers movie — whaddaya need, a road map?!
Actually, some sort of Gps system would be a blessing for both you, the viewer,...
