Unnecessary gore killed the protrusions of style
rust3728 October 2006
In fact I loved the first half. Modern editing, good eye, slow pace, some humor, good soundtrack selection, as well as good color processing. Sweet and cleverly employed references to 80s horror flicks. So, there was a style.

Then suddenly they lost it, when buckets (literally), fountains of artificial blood and bloody porridge came to scene. To be honest, I wouldn't call this a gore fest either - there were only two buckets poured, somewhat three fountains and one bloody porridge. Hell, who let the youngsters into the kitchen? Check, please, I'm leaving.

If you're a gore fan - go for it, but don't complain then about slow pace and longish shootings on landscapes and buildings. If you're looking for some genre inventions or surprises - miss it, there're hardly any. It's not spooky either.

I would only recommend to genre lovers of high tolerance, who can stand the absence of plot and unnecessary gore for the sake of style. Camera is worthy most of the time, sounding is nice sometimes as well. Views of abandoned jail are very moody.

How is this worth anyones time?? spoilers i guess, nothing u couldn't guess
weber-132 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Lighting effects were cool but they get old fast, the acting was horrible, there's one part when the sisters friend is a demon and and she is chasing her, you know how girls run when they look like they don't want to break a nail? well i don't think an undead would run like that, but maybe I'm wrong. The acting was pretty bad. At the end she lingers around waiting for something i guess she knows her sister will be coming for her but even after she kills her she just idly walks around. Who the hell would do that. and of course the ending was totally obvious. This movie could of been better with, actors that knew something about acting, a plot that had at least a small twist, and scenes that didn't make the characters look like total fools that deserved to die anyways. Because for me once you know the character is a moron you know they are going to die and secondly you don't care at all. I have seen worse movies but this one is definitely not worth anyones time.

OK for what it aspires to be...
innocuous22 March 2010
T8thP should probably get only three stars, but it doesn't aspire to be anything that it's not and some of it is actually pretty close to acceptable.

What's good? Well, the gore is actually pretty decent. The story is OK and some of the actors can actually act. Oh, yeah, and it's short.

What's bad? Typical of a low-budget movie, the on-location shooting is hit and miss. You can understand why they had to severely limit the locations, but to say that the locations actually mesh with each other (you'll see what I mean) is really stretching the truth. You never have a sense that the events take place in the "real" world, as opposed to a staged one. The on-location shooting also makes a mess of the sound quality. The sound is acceptable, but barely.

You could see worse horror movies.

So bad it's funny!
chessmaster77187 October 2006
Awful just doesn't seem to do it here. This is supposed to be a scary thriller but all I could do was laugh. The casting and acting were so second rate that it is hard to take them seriously. To think that they actually got funding for this movie just blows my mind. The directors approach seems to remind me an awful lot of Ed Wood, with absolutely no attention to detail. The characters reactions to certain "scary moments", are so unbelievable that even a computer nerd like myself starts to think, "maybe even I could have done better". To top it off I downloaded this movie for free and I still feel ripped off. But if your up for a wannabe B movie and a good laugh then this is your movie.

only one reason to watch
ts-lado27 March 2008
Only if you think that some brunette chick with nice body, holding huge axe and waving it few times during the entire movie is something you're into, then you go for it!

If you look anything other in the movie you let me be clear:

1) There is no directing 2) There is no acting 3) There are no characters 4) There are no effects 5) Gore is more funny, or at best cases just disgusting, but not scary 6) The Plot is EXTREMELY predictable

Hereby saying all that I understand that it is just "B" movie and expectations must not be high, but this movie fails even at that level as I have seen lots of "B" movies, and if they weren't cinema masterpieces, at least many of them just didn't suck and were fun to watch...

this movie fails at all levels...

Don't waste your time on this crap
korven-14 October 2006
This is definitely one of the worst cheap horror-movies i have ever seen. It isn't even good in a "b-movie good" way. The photography and scenery are nice enough, but acting, directing and script are terrible, as if made by children, and not very bright kids.

Nothing in this movie makes sense, it is basically a porn-movie about violence instead of sex, the plot is only an excuse for gory slaying scenes. You don't give a damned about anyone in the movie, because all the characters are totally unbelievable and act illogical all the time.

I would only recommend this movie to those who know they are totally uncritical when watching films and don't care if the plot or the acting makes any sense at any time as long as there are buckets of blood on the floor.

I'm sorry if this comment isn't very useful, because it probably is not until you have watched 15 minutes of the film, then you can remember this "it doesn't get any better". And if you have any taste in movies I bet you will turn it of and watch "Cannibal Ferox" instead, because in comparison that film has depth, meaning and personal portraits beyond compare.

I want 1,5 hours of my life back !

The slowest paced movie I have ever seen in my life
charliecheswick13 October 2006
When I mean slow , i don't mean it took a while to get going until the climax of the film . I mean EVERY single scene was dragged out to the extreme. For example there is a scene involving a couple of zombies and a guy with an axe. He doesn't just pick up the axe and smash their brains in ... no ... first he looks at the zombie...then the axe...then slowly ..very slowly...yes thats it put your right hand on the axe...then .yes ,yes.. the left hand ...now look at the zombie...yes then ...look at the axe ...now yes very,, very slowly walk towards the zombie.....right foot forward ...then the left ... then right again..then the left ... look at the zombie again....now, very, very, very slowly raise the axe...THEN- FINALLY SMASH ITS BRAINS IN.

there are also other such great dragged out scenes such as lady unlocking a pair of handcuffs and I kid you not , about 20 seconds of a women pressing the rewind and play button on a video camera.Every thing in this movie is incredibly slow and extended - the characters even walk throughout the duration of this movie ---by walk i mean at pleasant stroll speed.

This movie was awful and incredibly frustrating. Watching this movie gives you the same feeling you get when your stuck in a very slow moving queue

Well....
akman4711 October 2006
It was the most waste of time ever, this movie sucks (with a long S) more than running out of gas in the middle of the desert, on a very hot day! I cant find anything good to say about this peace of crap movie! I think maybe the people who made it, must have been on some kind of drug! Well I wonder if there will be a second one, if so they should call it the 9th Plague;) And I hope they use more Ketchup and maybe go for a better brand next time. "Use HEINZ or IDUN Ketchup" tastes better:) Don't bother wasting time on "words" for the actors to say, they should just go to the local drug store and get some more morphine or smoke some more ye-yo,then maybe the 9th plague will be a hit! maybe an Oscar even;) bottom line is that this movie sucks more than my English;)

good low-budget gritty splatter flick
purplefishballs20 November 2006
Surprised at the low ratings, obviously a lot of non-horror fans unable to deal with a little bit of fake blood. This is a tense, bloody, gritty low-budget splatter flick, nothing more or less. No plot to speak of, shot and directed in such a way as to maintain tension throughout. LOTS of fake blood, gore effects cheap but convincing. The acting is decent too, considering the genre. The infected/possessed/whatever look like they are wearing black-metal makeup for some unknown reason, which is kind of weird. An utterly predictable twist at the end. Unlike most American horror films these days you can empathize with the main character. With most US horror these days I really want to characters to die and get it over with as they are so annoying and obnoxious, but in this case I found myself rooting for the lead to survive the onslaught. If you like zombie films or survival horror you will probably really enjoy this movie, so long as you are not expecting to take away anything deep and meaningful from it.

Im in shock,,,

Warning: Spoilers
First of <<< DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM >>> I reckon that if you wrote down all of the dialogue for this film, you could write it on two sides of A4 paper... horrendous piece of writing it would be as well. Wafer thin plot, wafer thin acting, music that children could write at a first attempt on a piano.

I honestly don't even know how to summarise this film for you folk reading this... there's sooo much wrong with this film. Continuity with the lighting/skies etc is all over the place... contuinuity with the blood is all over the place. Granted there's some gory parts, but they're so predictable and terrible it's hard to say they had any point. The way things happen is just stupid to say the least... for example...

a) The guy finds a phone on the floor covered in blood,...stares at it then decides he's gonna get laid with his g/f and doesn't even tell her about it...??!??!?! b) The cop finds a pool of blood in a room,...*FOCUS IS WHERE FOLKS?*... so he radios his superior.. and stands on the blood puddle?!?!? guess what happens next?!,,,, yeah, he slips in it and bangs his head knocking him out... joy! My advice to anyone is go watch House of a Thousand Corpses, and The Devils Rejects...(Rob Zombie)... and observe how they blow this rubbish waste of time away...and recognise how a plot theme is produced! If u decide to watch this after reading this...more fool you,.... if you have already seen it, i'd be extremely surprised if you're not understanding what i've typed. ITS AWLFUL!!!

Sweet B-Flick!
carverfilm10 October 2006
A bunch of kids go into a prison to find a missing person and meet up with some funky demonic evil. Simple enough plot. I caught this thing in the theater a couple weeks ago. It was a midnight showing and I wasn't doing much so I figured "what the heck". It started out a little slow, but once it got going, it really kicked into gear.

I'm a big time horror buff, and I've been watching a lot of low budget horror flicks lately... Mostly they leave me feeling irritated. I've gotta say, this one was kind of a breath of fresh air from all the other B-flicks I've seen. It really gives you the goods; from blood explosions to guts to unexplainable, yet very enjoyable prison sex. The acting was surprisingly good for a B horror flick... for the most part. The main girl was awesome, especially after showering in demonic blood ha ha.

I was especially impressed that they were able to do what they did with so little relative money. The set design and a lot of the camera work didn't strike me as being uber-low budget.

The Gore FX and makeup were really cool too, look out for the eye scene! The theater was only about half full when I saw this, and when a couple of the gore moments pop up there was definitely some giddy applause from the crowd. I found myself joining in, cheering the gore haven on the screen.

An academy award winner, No, but a good horror fix on a Saturday night... perfect for any horror fan.

Finally saw this in 2017 n still enjoyable aft 11 years of its release.
Fella_shibby15 January 2017
I saw this for the first time recently. This movie was on my radar for a very long time. Had seen the director's Carver in 2008 n was searching for this movie. This movie is about a girl who heads out to look for her missing sister. The girls female friend also goes with her n even persuades her reluctant boyfriend by tempting him that she will give him "satisfaction". Viewers hope goes up. The gang teams up with local police officer and the mysterious ex prison guard n they head towards an abandon prison in the forest outside town. Over here all mayhem starts. This movie will satisfy horror fans with its lavish amounts of gore, demons/zombies. The abandon prison did add to the creepines. There is enuff kills. There is some nudity n the ending was non predictable. Made on a tiny budget, it does hav its flaws.

Awful movie, waste of time..
InterCC6 November 2006
I saw this movie last night with three others. After about 30 minutes we were hoping that the movie would get much better, because it surely wasn't scary neither was it nice to look at. There were some funny moments in the movie, too bad that the was intention to be scary, but we all changed the perspective of the movie a bit to be at least a little bit entertained.

At the end of the movie a girl who was watching the movie too said "Come on, someone kill her!" about the main character in the movie, because then the movie would end.

I see this movie as a waste of my time and I was not entertained at all. The three others I was watching the movie with thought about it in the same way. The 4.1 rating the movie has at this moment is very realistic in my opinion. Maybe it should have even lower.

Oh my god, I just wasted 90 minutes of my lifetime
torsten-gebel25 July 2008
Somebody here on IMDb wrote "this movie is like a porn movie with violence instead of sex". And after watching this movie, I have to disagree with this person, because I've seen porn movies that were way better directed than this one. I mean, this looks like a bunch of silly kids took a camera and made their own movie just for fun. But is it a least funny? Legendary Italian anti-director Lucio Fulci produced a series of

gore-movies in the 80ies, normally featuring horrible acting, brainless scripts, 10-miles-over-the-top brutality and clumsy directing. But these movies were fun. They were 70-90 minutes of pure, unintentionally funny entertainment. But this movie right here isn't even entertaining in that tradition. It just... well... sucks. It's

too slowly paced, too monotonous. And the gore-factor right here can't really compensate for this. There have been single minutes in braveheart that were more gory than this whole movie. There are just a couple of very short scenes with some guts and blood, in between long periods of pure boredom. This is the kind of movie, you'll have to apologize for, if you convince other people of watching it with you.

This is what a good B film consists of............
ikarusprojekt10 November 2006
First off I have to say this film does have its' flaws. The acting could be a bit better however, the rest of the movie makes up for where the acting dropped off.....These days it seems that a lot of the better films are foreign or have ethnic directors as is the case here in the 8th plague......Franklin Geurarro really does this flick some justice, had this film had a lofty budget i don't think it would have been as good as it was.If you like blood and guts like myself then you will enjoy the 8th plague....heck even my girlfriend said "Did you see that?" "Rewind that you have to see that again...!!!" It normally takes a lot to whoa her believe me....anyways I gotta say that this flick is definitely worth while and that says a lot because i think most of what's out there today is just a bunch of crap...so if you wanna see a good movie pick this up next time you are at the video shop...this truly is what a good B film is made of........

You can't go wrong with prison sex
shermanboy1132 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A girl, Lauan, is worried about her sister whom jaunted off to a weekend getaway at a haunted prison with some friends. She enlists the help of her two friends and away they go. along the way they meet up with two local cats, a dumb deputy and a strapping wood cutter and former prison guard named Mason. The meeting of mason is perfect, they pull up and this shirtless guy is chopping up wood with an ax. Nice foreshadowing. They all go off and head to their doom! Now that the clunky exposition is out of the way we get to the really good stuff. right away Launa's two horny friends go off and have themselves a "conjugal visit" right next door to a rotten corpse... classic! If I had one thing to change about this movie it would be to have more of this and make it a zombified women in prison film. From there we have some nice blood and guts as well as some nice scares that really sneak up on you and get in your head. The ending was nice because it was not what you'd expect from a splatter flick like this. It was kind of touching which was cool. The main girl did a great job and I felt bad for her. I'm a big fan of maverick filmmakers going against the grain and making some off the wall stuff. That's exactly what these guys are doing. I'm looking forward to see what's next on their plate.

very stylish horror
paul-ayres-607841 February 2020
From the ratings and reviews I read before watching this I wasn't expecting much. I had a pleasant surprise. It is very stylish due mainly to the close up camera shots which give plenty of atmosphere. The camerawork and editing are both very slick.

Lesley Anne Valenza was a superb choice for the lead character. Acting is so much more than spoken words as she proves with her performance.

Yeah, too much gore was its downfall. It really didn't need it. All in all a very worthwhile flick.

She found more than her sister.
lastliberal10 July 2010
Things run a little slow for the first half hour as Launa (Leslie Anne Valenza, Carver) is searching for her missing sister. It isn't until they enter the abandoned prison that things start to pick up.

I really don't know why Crystal (Hollis McLachlan) decides to stop in the middle of a search to have sex with her boyfriend, but we did enjoy her topless, even if it didn't last long before they heard strange noises.

The gore is good, even for a low budget film, and the cinematography is excellent.

Launa looks so good all drenched in blood after chopping off the head of her friend. But she is forgiven, I assume, as they both go on to write and direct and star in a new movie out this year.

You'll either love it or hate it.
toadcream7 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Anybody that watches the 8th Plague is either gonna love it or hate it. I don't think there's gonna be any real middle ground here. I know a lot of horror mongers, and that's been the general opinion split. However most of the people I've talked to about this fall under my category... loved it. I can detach myself enough from my opinion to understand why someone might hate this movie, and they're entitled to that opinion. It just totally worked for me. You just don't find too many of these uber-low-budget, truly independent gems on video shelves, but when you do it's a nice feeling. This is quite simply a movie about a lonely girl who loses the one person she cares about. Unfortunately she loses her to the forces of demonic darkness. I felt the whole movie was executed very well from the camera-work to the acting to the scares... and gave horror fans what they paid four dollars for. Renting unknown B-movies can be a truly depressing experience, but not in this case.

Low budget, but has some things going for it
jabelltulsa-2192913 July 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has stayed with me for quite some time. I would suggest watching this alone at night, with ZERO expectations.

The acting is truly B quality for most, but there are some good quirky acting that does a fairly good job of setting the story up. The story has a lot of great potential as well. Could mere writing on a wall possess a person? That is a truly terrifying concept. How do you erase it? How do you even know it is there to erase without becoming possessed? I found that part of the story to be really intriguing.

Also, the main girl is cute, so that helps :)

As I said before, don't watch this with someone else, because it will just become a contest to see who can laugh the most or make the harshest criticism ... This is a movie that delivers on B-movie goodness, but I feel would make a good, bigger budget remake. The name, though .........

Definitely worth your time!
killerreviewscom17 September 2006
Okay, so there are only about two things in this world that get me hot. One: the sound my XBOX 360 makes when it starts up, and the second: an attractive girl covered in blood, carrying a large red fire axe. Yep, that about does it for me. Seeing how the poster of THE 8th PLAGUE depicts one of these magical properties, I was more then pleased when asked to review the film.

THE 8th PLAGUE is about a girl with gorgeous green eyes named Launa who heads out to the town of Halcyon Springs with a few others, to look for her missing sister, Nikki. Launa and the gang quickly team up with local police officer, Buck, and the mysterious Mason (D.J. Perry), another local. Shortly afterward, they come across the deteriorating Halcyon Ridge Correctional Facility, where the majority of the film plays out. It's on this hallowed ground where our heroes learn that the 'curse of The 8th Plague' is still very much alive. What's the curse you ask? Watch the freaking movie! Jeeeeeez!

So watching THE 8th PLAGUE, at first I found that everything was pretty much business-as-usual. Nothing was overly impressive, but nothing outright sucked, either. The majority of the first act is spent following Launa and her friends as previously described. We are treated to a few creepy sequences but for the most part, it's straight-ahead story development. Some people will like this and some won't; my feelings were somewhere in between. The music and cinematography were great, but even then I found myself a tad bored at times. I think the problem was that I didn't care much for Launa and company. A simple scene showing them hanging out laughing together would have helped. A few jokes, perhaps?

Once the gang runs into Mason, (a.k.a. the mysterious local who knows a thing or two about a thing or two) that's the key plot point of the whole movie. It's an important moment because a) D.J. Perry comes into the picture and he's damn fun to watch, and b) the almighty red axe is introduced! From this point on, when they head out to the abandoned Correctional Facility, is where the film begins to earn its gold stars. Once inside, most of the 'Scooby-Doo crew' decide to look around, except for Crystal (Hollis Zemany) who decides that she wants to screw her dorky boyfriend and quickly strips down. ("Mmmmm….gratuitous sex…." Homer Simpson moans.) While the scene felt completely out of place in such a serious film, it was still a treat to watch. The girl's got some good lookin' stems, nice stomach and boobies to die for. We thank you Hollis, from the bottom of our skeevy little hearts!

But where THE 8th PLAGUE truly shines is in the gore and special effects department. One of my favorite scenes is when one unfortunate demon takes an axe to the mouth. It was very well-done considering the budget, but even in a mega-budget film it would be pretty damn impressive. I mean, during the final twenty minutes of the film it's as if everyone's taken a blood bath, literally. Main characters are dying left and right, the plague is working overtime, people are cutting their eyes out, pools of blood the size of small lakes are forming everywhere. It's pretty insane! Even my wife couldn't watch it anymore, and she eats racks of raw meat for breakfast! The final minute is pretty cool, too. (Do I smell a sequel? Oh, no… that's just puke on my shirt from last night. Damn Playboy Mansion parties!)

The only real complaints I have with this film were with the pacing, a few sketchy acting moments from the supporting cast and some of the production values. I love that artists today can make films reasonably cheap because of technology, but I find it nearly impossible to invest on an emotional level when dealing with digital cinematography. I'm just constantly reminded that I'm watching a movie. That's the format's main downfall; nearly impossible to ignore. With that being said, the filmmakers did a great job with what they had. I don't think the film could have looked or sounded any better. To die-hard horror fans like us, this is nothing new, anyway. At this point, half the stuff coming out now is shot with the more affordable digital format, which I support one-hundred percent.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by THE 8th PLAGUE. I think it's a solid first feature for director Franklin Guerrero Jr. and crew, so much so that I would easily check out his next project based on the quality of this one. If you happen to stumble across it at your local video store, it's definitely worth picking up. I give you my guarantee that it's better then most other flicks you'll find dominating the middle shelf.

fantastic gore-fest
tyardsin23 October 2006
This movie does have a slow start, and I'd heard bad things about that. However I was pleasantly surprised when it picked up and the blood started to fly. This movie had fantastic gore and a decent plot. The atmosphere was also very eerie, and the music was cool. The ending was very different from most low budget horror flicks which was refreshing. I was very impressed at the overall attention to production value on such a tight budget. Overall, I must say that the 8th Plague was not too shabby for a DV flick. The girls were hot too which didn't hurt. This movie is not for the squeamish. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a 9th plague. Hopefully they'll start the gore and creepiness sooner on that one if they make it!

This movie made me a little ill... which is a good thing
kpetrov8012 October 2006
My boyfriend likes watching horror movies, and I've kind of got sucked into them as of late. We just checked this one out, and it made enough of an impression on me to comment on it. It's about this girl, Launa that goes off to look for her little sister and ends up at a creepy old (haunted?) prison.

First off - The acting. A few surprisingly good performances compared to most of the horror movies on this level. A few sketchy performances too, but overall not bad.

The look - Again, I'm basing this on similarly budgeted movies (there's more than you think out there). The look of the movie was very unique and impressive. I found myself even saying "wow, cool shot" from time to time. Beautiful colors and vistas... not to mention the main guy wasn't too hard on the eyes. There were a few moments of dodgy camera-work though, but the good definitely out-weighed the bad.

The scare factor - I was pleased with the tension and dread they built into the movie. I even jumped a few times. It dragged in the beginning of the movie, but once they get to the prison they catch their wind.

The sound - Very sparse. Perhaps too sparse at times. A lot of the music was very odd, but I think it worked for the most part. It was a lot of synth music, however it wasn't done in the typical cheesy horror score kind of way. The feel of it was definitely electric synth that came across oddly organic. I liked that they didn't throw in a bunch of rock music and try to call it a score. The rock music they did have was very nice.

The gore - I think this is where a lot of the big positive marks come in. The gore was disgusting and plentiful. I do love when a movie has fun gore like this, even if I can't watch it all the time. We had a good time getting grossed out by guts splattering on the ground and girls crawling through pools of blood riddled with chunks of human flesh. Very nice! This is not the most memorable movie, nor is it the most original, but it's definitely worth a look.

It's B-Horror Entertainment, Excellent Photography, not Academy Award material
scottishlass8416 October 2006
Okay, I saw this flick, and as a B-Horror lady fan, I think the overall reviews given to this film have been by uneducated, unfamiliar, and overall daft citizens of the world. The Sweedish most specifically.

The photography of this film is beautifully captured...ya, I often found myself saying, "Come on, lets get on with the action". BUT the longer shots and cheesy story-line are all in balanced conjunction with the classics, i.e. "Night of the Living Dead" , not the re-make, or the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre". The acting is stylized, and intentional, in my opinion, because when it comes time to stop being a "character" and become a demon, those guys (and gals) were right on. It was exciting, tantalizing, and overall an enjoyable B-Horror flick, for those interested in B-Horror....NOT Academy Award-Winning drama.

So eat some fish Sweed' guy, and have fun freezing your ass off while you do it.

Not perfect, but pretty darn not-bad
vinniefull12 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
I've got mixed feelings about this movie. On one hand its not super original, it kinda drags in the first 20 minutes and there were a couple of moments that made me scratch my head... On the other hand we've got brains gushing, ax in the face, splattering guts, and as a lot of other folks are mentioning... a hot chick that looks like she washed up using some guy's jugular as the shower-head.

What can I say? I like horror plain and simple. I grew up on the stuff in the 80's heyday and I haven't been able to shake it. This movie has its moments of weakness, but overall it delivers on the goods for any horror fan with the above-mentioned plus some nice tension build, genuine creepiness and some jump off your butt scares. I think this one will satisfy any horror junkie.

I give this a tentative 9, but teetering on 8. If this weren't a horror flick I might not rate it so high. It might not be for everyone, but it in the long run it works for me!
