Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, has blessed the anime and manga communities with his works. His creations like Dragon Ball and Dr. Slump have opened the realm of manga to a global audience that has now fallen in love with the anime and manga industry, making it one of the biggest entertainment artworks of all time.
The Dragon Ball universe
However, Toriyama revealed in an interview that he did not plan to send the drafts of his magnum opus, Dragon Ball, to Weekly Shonen Jump. Rather, he wanted to send it to Weekly Shonen Magazine at first but, ultimately, was forced to get his work published in Weekly Shonen Jump. Toriyama’s first manga, Dr. Slump, was already a big deal in Weekly Shonen Magazine at the time.

The Baki series is one of the best-known and most popular martial arts manga and anime series of all time, right next to Hajime no Ippo and Kengan Ashura (we’re not counting Dragon Ball since it has a fantasy element to it). While not everyone likes the style of Baki, the series is popular, and, in fact, the series has been ongoing since 1991, with six different titles as of the time of writing. The current manga story, Baki Rahen, has been published since 2023.
Many of the series’ titles have been adapted into anime format, including the ever-so-popular Baki Hanma series, but we have recently received confirmation that the fourth title in the series, Baki-Dou, will also receive an anime adaptation in the future, adding to the collection.

George Morikawa shared on his Twitter account on March 14, 2024, his plans for a new project following the conclusion of the Hajime No Ippo manga, which involves creating a manga focused on chipmunks.
In his tweet, Morikawa expressed surprise at his deteriorated skills in drawing chipmunks, a subject he had not tackled in quite some time. He revealed that despite dedicating ample time to practice in anticipation of creating a chipmunk themed manga following the conclusion of Hajime no Ippo, his efforts were met with disappointment when he presented the concept to his editor.
Reflecting on his past experiences with chipmunks, particularly his pets Joeichiro and Rumi, Morikawa expressed a sense of nostalgia and longing for their presence.

Combat sports are considered among the first competitions that humanity engaged in, with both wrestling and various martial arts integrated into every culture. The stories around sports have deep roots as well, often following a familiar structure of underdog stories or deserved champions dominating their discipline. Indeed, there have been variations as a desire for more complex stories around professional competition has developed, but it is seldom one that entirely breaks the mold.

At a glance, there’s not much that I have in common with Ade – the lead character in Festival of Slaps. I immigrated to the UK with my Bulgarian family when I was 15, whereas he grew up in South London with his Nigerian parents. Yet, as I watched the film for the first time, the staggering similarities between our adolescent lives kept on coming – from the experience of navigating through traditional Eastern European and Pan-African (respectively) styles of upbringing, to desperately trying to immerse ourselves into a different culture without losing our identity in the process and, God forbid, disappointing our mothers. And, if you need proof that I am not the only one who found this boldly and hilariously conceived 12 minute gem to be a hugely relatable and disarming watch, check out the film’s festival track record. Directed and written by Abdou Cissé, Festival of Slaps examines the...

Tapping into the inner voice of a fighter in the ring is nothing new to Mma manga, but where Hiroki Endo's “All-Rounder Meguru” transcends many of its more famous counterparts is its dedication to authenticity and ability to break down a fight with technical precision. Couple this with the series' ability to convey the evolution of the sport by amalgamating various techniques, and it proves to be a treat for Mma purists. At the same time, unfortunately, the laser focus on authenticity ensures the manga will stay a niche within the genre.

As part of the press tour for his new film "Creed III" -- whose fight scenes bring the franchise into anime territory -- Michael B. Jordan listed his five favorite anime series on BBC Radio 1: "'One Piece,'" "Dragon Ball," "Naruto," "Bleach," and "Hunter x Hunter." These are all worthy picks, even though it "would take the average person over 957 hours ... to complete Jordan's top five anime recommendations," as Isaiah Colbert said at Kotaku. "One Piece" has lasted for over a thousand episodes. "Dragon Ball" remains one of the most popular anime ever. "Naruto" featured some of the wildest fight scenes in anime history, while "Bleach" at its best was just cool. "Hunter x Hunter" is messier, spanning two adaptations and a source comic that has yet to finish. But its creator Yoshiharu Togashi has over 3 million followers on Twitter, and his dedicated fans haven't given up on him yet.

"Rocky" is one of the most iconic franchises of all time, one that captured the change in Hollywood from the rise of independent dramas of the '70s into the bombastic action films of the '80s. Yet the franchise started losing popularity, never capable of recapturing the awards praise of the original film or the commercial success of "Rocky IV."
Which makes the "Creed" movies kind of a miracle. The first "Creed" is a rare legasequel that actually works, a film that takes what made the first "Rocky" movie special but adds something new while paying off the past. It felt both fresh and familiar. Now in its third installment, Michael B. Jordan takes on the role of director in addition to wearing the fighting gloves, and he brings in some very cool additions to the franchise.

The "Rocky" movies have always felt a bit like anime. You have a very endearing underdog story with a charming protagonist who, with the power of friendship and hard work, manages to become the very best, like no one ever was. Then, as we got more sequels, the villains became more and more cartoonishly ridiculous, with increasingly over-the-top gimmicks. I mean, really, what is Ivan Drago if not an anime villain?
Then the "Creed" movies came and offered something similar, yet fresh and different. 2015's "Creed" delivered an underdog story, a redemption story, and a story of grief and legacy all in one, with some of the best filmmaking in the entire franchise (and the best fight choreography too). 2018's "Creed III" only further upped the ante with an even more emotional story of legacy and of parents and sons.
Now, the upcoming "Creed III" aims to reinvent the franchise yet again,...

Sports is one of the coolest genres you can explore in anime. The medium is uniquely suited to take even the most painfully boring of sports and turn it into the greatest game ever played, making every moment a nailbiter, every decision one of life and death, every inner thought a thrilling monologue, and every rivalry an epic and engaging relationship.
While a sports anime tends to be better than the real thing (don't @ me), some can start to feel a bit same-y. More often than not, they focus heavily on the power of teamwork and friendship, about going to regionals and then nationals, about the tragedy of the senpais graduating and leaving the team, the horror of having a big game right before exams. There is nothing like a good underground story, especially an underground boxing story. There is no thrill quite like watching a boxer becoming stronger, facing adversity, and eventually being the last one standing in the ring.
There are many great sports anime about virtually every sport out there, from association football and volleyball to ping pong and more. I kind of feel sorry for Jeff Lemire. He’s a big deal right now and this is probably his highest profile book ongoing, thanks to the critical acclaim and fan love of his prior creator-owned titled title ‘Sweet Tooth’. The level of expectations on this book is high all around and, as a high concept sci-fi title, it needs to be both intelligent and accessible.

At least I think it’s a drama. The embedded trailer certainly looks dramatic, that is, until someone is hit by a pitcher, an event which is accompanied by a cartoon sound effect. The ensuing jump kick is a little curious, as well. No matter — I’m rather excited to see director Kim Sang-jin’s “Fighting Spirit”, mostly because I’ve never seen a South Korean movie about baseball before. The film, which follows the career revival of a former sports superstar, opens in South Korean this September. Curious parties are instructed to investigate the clip below. With Farrah Fawcett expected to leave the hospital within days, her friend Alana Stewart is in awe of how the Charlie's Angels star has dealt with her latest medical ordeal. "I've never seen anyone fight for their life like this," says Stewart, a constant presence at the actress's hospital bedside and co-producer of Fawcett's upcoming documentary about her battle with anal cancer. Despite widespread reports to the contrary, Fawcett, 62, is currently hospitalized for internal bleeding not directly related to the cancer. "Farrah is not in a coma and she's never been unconscious," Stewart says. "It's unconscionable for these things to be put out.

Q: Both the men on The New Adventures of Old Christine ping my gaydar (and are really cute, but that’s a different issue). Is either gay? – Randy, Lakewood, Co
Clark Gregg (left) and Hamish Linklater with Julia Louis-Dreyfuss
A: Neither Clark Gregg nor Hamish Linklater are gay. Both are married to women — Dirty Dancing’s Jennifer Grey in the case of Gregg.
Linklater did play a gay man in 2006 opposite Brothers & Sisters’ Luke Macfarlane (also playing gay) in The Busy World Is Hushed, a play at New York’s Playwrights Horizons. Gregg, meanwhile, played a gay guy on a 2003 episode of Will & Grace.
Q: Mickey Rourke????? Puh-leeeeeze! – Tommy, New Haven, Ct
