Before Netflix brought Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle to the digital streaming masses, there was Ray Stevenson. Before Stevenson there was Thomas Jane, and well before that, there was Dolph Lundgren, but I digress. Marvel’s most brutal character, The Punisher, has been beloved by fans ever since dawning the white boots on the cover of Amazing Spider-Man #129. The character has had a few cinematic adaptations over the years and two of them are receiving a 4K Ultra HD combo pack release from Lionsgate.

David Lynch’s masterpiece Mulholland Dr. hit the Criterion Collection last week, and it’s lost none of its terrifying, dreamlike allure. (If anything, it’s gained some over the years.) Central to the film’s artistry are its two brilliant female leads, Naomi Watts and Laura Harring. Both actresses were relative unknowns at the time — indeed, both had kind of given up on Hollywood, which fits perfectly with the film’s themes of disillusionment and despair in the Dream Factory — and Mulholland’s success supercharged their careers. Interestingly, for a while, the film itself looked like it may never see the light of day: It was originally supposed to be a TV series, but Lynch wound up reshooting and recutting it as a feature after the network rejected the pilot. Over the years Harring has starred in films like John Q, The Punisher, and Love in the Time of Cholera,...

The great thing about being Robert De Niro is that any project you want to make will eventually get off the ground, even if based on your star power alone. Such is the case with The Comedian, an Art Linson-scribed drama that De Niro has been trying to make for years, first with Martin Scorsese then with Sean Penn. Now, the two-time Oscar winner is finally moving ahead with the project, having secured Donnie Brasco helmer Mike Newell to sit behind the camera.
De Niro will portray an accomplished insult comic, possibly inspired by Don Rickles. Linson previously penned Hollywood satire What Just Happened (which De Niro starred in), and he’ll also be producing here. Interestingly enough, the stand-up material was written by Jeffrey Ross, best known for his digs during Comedy Central and Friars Club celebrity roasts.

'Love In The Time Of Racism.' This is a play on words. Many of you know the title, ‘Love In The Time of Cholera’. Gabriel Garcia Marquez was writing about love as a sickness, a passion, a disease and, perhaps, figuring out how to love when a disease plagues the culture. I’ve been thinking a lot about love, lately. Always questioning my ability to do it. Thinking about how I have done it and how I can do it better. In the midst of extreme trauma, I wonder, how do people love one another? After the Grand Jury decision in the Eric Garner case, I was shaken. I spent days thinking about it, talking about it, reading about it. Keeping friends steady. I was encouraged because people were...

You’ve probably already spotted the Esquire UK post called “Films Stupid People Think Are Clever” where the likes of Christopher Nolan and David Fincher are given the shortest end of the stick. It’s a worthless article that represents the easiest kind of contrarianism: People like these things? Let’s say we don’t like them, but not really explain why. Now, I’m a reasonable un-stupid person by all the traditional rubrics. My Iq is three digits, my Sat score was four, and I’m probably one (maybe two) practice sessions away from being able to walk and chew gum simultaneously. I’ve read books like “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” and “Love in the Time of Cholera,” and I think I’ve understood them. They’re about girls, right? Just kidding. I’m also smart enough to recognize that Esquire’s trolling traffic-magnet doesn’t deserve a response. Or...

Strangely, what I thought about first was the parrot: a royal Paramaribo parrot, who knew only the blasphemies of sailors but said them in a voice so human that he was well worth the extravagant price of twelve centavos. Purchased extravagantly, educated extravagantly, the bird came to know not only nautical profanity but also French (“like an academician”), Latin, the Gospel according to Matthew, Liberal Party slogans, how to bark like a mastiff when being burgled, and how to refer to itself: as—officiously, proudly, possibly snidely—“Royal Parrot.” And yet, despite this lavish education, the ungrateful creature escapes its home, alights in the branches of a nearby mango tree, and thereby causes the death, by parrot, ladder, senescence, and gravity, of Dr. Juvenal Urbino, in the opening chapter of Gabriel García Márquez’s Love in the Time of Cholera.“It was a memorable death, and not without reason.” So...

The Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel García Márquez, who wrote One Hundred Years of Solitude and Love in the Time of Cholera, died on Thursday. He was 87.
Gabriel García Márquez Dies
García Márquez had been receiving treatment in a Mexican hospital for dehydration and infections, according to CNN.
"We're left with the memories and the admiration to all Colombians and also Mexicans because I think Gabo was half Mexican and half Colombian. He's just as admired in Mexico as he is in (his native) Colombia, all of Latin America and throughout the world," Jose Gabriel Ortiz, Columbia’s ambassador to Mexico, told CNN en Español.
"I believe they were somehow emotionally ready for this regrettable outcome,” he added. “They knew he was suffering from a complex, terminal disease and was an elderly man. I believe [Garcia Marquez's widow Mercedes Barcha] was getting ready for this moment, although nobody can really prepare themselves for a moment like this.

"There is always something left to love." - Gabriel Garcia Marquez "It's enough for me to be sure that you and I exist at this moment." Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations" has seen numerous film iterations over the years, the most memorable possibly being the 1998 modernized version starring Ethan Hawke and Gwyneth Paltrow. Now director Mike Newell ("Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire," "Love in the Time of Cholera") has taken the story back to its 19th century roots and gone full period costume drama. Jeremy Irvine stars as Pip, an orphan whose life is curated into that of a fine gentleman with the help of a rich benefactor (Fiennes). Helena Bonham Carter plays the wealthy spinster Miss Havisham who raises Estella (Grainger) to break Pip's heart. The film premiered in the UK almost a year ago, but doesn't hit the U.S. until Nov. 8. Check out the trailer below:...

Variety reports that Robert Duvall and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse) have been set to lead A Night in Old Mexico, the second effort from director Emilio Aragón (Paper Birds). With a cast that also features Angie Cepeda (Love in the Time of Cholera), Luis Tosar (Miami Vice), and Javier Gutiérrez (Extract), the film centers on a “developing relationship” shared between an older gentleman (Duvall) and his grandson (Irvine), along with the “action, tragedy and romance” in their lives. William D. Wittliff has written Old Mexico, making this his first script since 2000′s The Perfect Storm; I guess he finally had a story to tell.

As of June of 2010, it sounded like director Sam Mendes might be at the helm of an adaptation of Ian McEwan's period drama On Chesil Beach with Carey Mulligan taking one of the lead roles. However, flash forward over a year later and ScreenDaily (via The Playlist) has word that Mona Lisa Smile and Love in the Time of Cholera director Mike Newell is now in talks to direct the film after he finishes work on his adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic novel Great Expectations. The film has been a difficult one to round up money for with Focus Features dropping it before Studio Canal came around to pick up the pieces. The story is very provocative and sexual in nature as it follows a virginal newlywed couple in 1963 on the night of their honeymoon, ready to make their marriage official with a little help from the bedroom...
