Exclusive: Cris Abrego, the longtime Banijay U.S. chief who recently set up his own production group with Eva Longoria, is expected to become the new boss of the TV Academy.
Deadline understands Abrego is the frontrunner for the position. The election to name the next boss is set to be held next week but sources have told Deadline that Abrego is already being talked about by some as the next Chairman and CEO of the Primetime Emmys operator.
He is expected to replace Frank Scherma, the co-founder of RadicalMedia, who was “termed out” after running the TV Academy for the past four years.
Abrego’s appointment would further raise the profile on unscripted television at the Emmys as he is the first Television Academy chair to come from the reality TV world.
His appointment is not a major surprise as Abrego has been involved with the Television Academy for a number of years.

Cris Abrego, quite fittingly, has had one of the more surreal career trajectories in entertainment. A reality producer who got his start logging tapes for Road Rules before going on to create aughts hits such as Flavor of Love, Celebrity Paranormal Project and The Surreal Life, he segued to the C-suite after the 2008 acquisition of his 51 Minds Entertainment shingle by Dutch-based multiplatform media company Endemol. “I certainly felt something shift when I sold my first business,” says Abrego, who was 36 at the time. “To have that kind of windfall at that age was life-changing.”
Rather than rest on those early laurels, the East Los Angeles native was “hungry to do it all again,” and he not only survived subsequent corporate mergers and acquisitions but steadily rose through the ranks, becoming CEO of Endemol Shine North America and now chairman of French media behemoth Banijay’s North American operations, where he...

Rock of Love reality series and spin-offs like Flavor of Love built a hardcore fandom. Now fans can dig in deep thanks to Lacey Sculls, the fearless redhead from Vh-1’s top-rated shows, Rock of Love with Bret Michaels, and Charm School with Sharon Osbourne.
Sculls dished with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about the launch of her Storm TV network, which allows commercial-free access to just about every Of Love series imaginable. Plus, Sculls hopes the network continues to build the fan community so fans can communicate and interact with each other.
“I knew that the Of Love fans were missing these shows immensely, so I wanted to create a platform specifically for them,” Sculls said.
If you’re longing for that nostalgic feeling, and you like your escapism interruption-free, Storm TV is one of the few platforms where subscribers can watch both Rock of Love and Flavor of Love with no commercials.

Eva Longoria and Cris Abrego have known each other for 20 years. As two of entertainment’s most prominent Latino figures, they have developed a strong friendship around shared experiences and a similar passion for nurturing creative talent.
At long last, actor-director-producer Longoria and Abrego, the veteran unscripted producer and executive, have joined forces to launch Hyphenate Media Group, a company that will be part production company, part talent scouting agency and part business incubator. Banijay, where Abrego serves as chairman of the Americas, has made a strategic investment in the company. Abrego will remain in his executive role with the French production giant even as he devotes his time to building Hyphenate.
“With Hyphenate Media Group, Eva and I are building an engine for culture-defining content by investing in visionary multi-hyphenate artists and providing these extraordinary creative leaders with the resources and infrastructure they need to scale their businesses,” Abrego said.

House of Villains has an all-star reality TV cast, and we’re excited to dive into the new series. Reality TV villains have been around for as long as the television genre has existed, and fans love to hate the scummiest folks who are cast on these shows. Now, these villains have a second chance to shine. So, what makes each House of Villains cast member a true villain? Here’s what crimes they’ve committed in the past.
‘House of Villains’ cast member Jax Taylor from ‘Vanderpump Rules’ brought the drama
It makes sense that the House of Villains cast would include Jax Taylor from Vanderpump Rules. As one of the original cast members, Jax became known for cheating, lying, and causing severe drama.

TheWrap recently caught up with the “House of Villains” cast ahead of the series premiere to talk about their reality TV careers and how the genre has evolved over the years.
Omarosa, who is celebrating 20 years in unscripted television since competing in the first season of “The Apprentice” with Donald Trump in 2003, says many current shows feel “manufactured.”
“It’s changed in a way that I think that a lot of people get on TV, and they try to put on airs, or they try to be a character, or they try so hard to be entertaining,” Omarosa replied when asked what’s changed about reality TV. “Whereas I think when we started, we were just truly just out there having fun and being ourselves. And we didn’t have to manufacture drama. So now you just see all this manufactured drama.”

There’s change on the high seas of Banijay.
Christian Sarabia, President of 51 Minds Entertainment, the production company behind Bravo hit Below Deck, is stepping down from the Banijay Americas-owned business.
Julie Pizzi, President of fellow Banijay-backed firm Bunim/Murray, will add overseeing 51 Minds to her responsibilities running the Real World producer.
It is the latest change for the group; earlier this year, Cris Abrego, who founded 51 Minds, stepped down as CEO of Banijay Americas with Ben Samek taking over that role and Abrego remaining as Chairman. There’s been much speculation about Abrego’s own role in recent months.
Sarabia has been with 51 Minds for many years, having produced series such as The Surreal Life and Flavor of Love. He took the reins at the company in 2014 after Abrego became one of the top execs at the-then titled Endemol North America and the departure of co-founder Mark Cronin.

And with each new show, I've realized there are some fundamental lessons I've learned about love. Perhaps these are some lessons you've also gleaned while watching strangers search for that all-consuming love.
Never Ignore The Red Flags
Look, we've all been there before.
You meet the perfect person, and maybe for a while, everything is great. You're happy and content, and you feel like your relationship is growing and heading in a positive direction, but along the way, you notice a few things that just aren't right.

Ah, the 2000s. A time when TV was watched on cable and reality television was a one-way ticket to fame, much like going viral is today. This was the decade which brought us Keeping Up With The Kardashians, The Real Housewives, and Jersey Shore. Not all reality television was as successful in sustaining its run, but nonetheless entertained and encaptured us at the time they aired. Let’s take a look into yester-decade and remember some of our favorite reality shows from 2k. 1. Flavor of Love with Flava Flav Season 1 of Flavor of Love premiered on VH1 on January

Well, this is surreal. On Thursday, July 22, VH1 announced that The Surreal Life will be rebooted with a new slew of celebrity participants for fall 2021. As fans of the iconic series well know, The Surreal Life puts a batch of celebrities under one roof, causing countless headline-making reality TV moments. In fact, we have The Surreal Life, which originally ran for six seasons between 2003 and 2006, to thank for America's Next Top Model star Adrianne Curry's unexpected marriage to The Brady Bunch's Christopher Knight and Flavor Flav's revived success in the '00s, including his spinoff shows, Strange Love and Flavor of Love. Oh, and we'd be remiss if we didn't...

At the height of the pandemic (or about a million years ago in internet time), the reality TV competition Slag Wars became a minor cult hit. Hosted by adult performers and LGBTQ icons the Cock Destroyers, the show set out to find the next LGBTQ icon, or “slag,” and was marketed as one of the most sex-positive reality shows of all time for its refreshingly non-judgmental portrayal of sex work.

It’s March 17th and if there’s any one, basic, simple apolitical truth we can all agree on, it’s this: You know about the coronavirus. It sounds reductionist to the point of moronic; even the most doltish Neanderthal or Henry Darger-worshipping recluse knows that the world is facing a major pandemic that requires outreach, unity, and physical isolation on a global, unprecedented scale. Whether you’re a responsible social distancer or an asshole who has to get that one last pub crawl in, the sole commonality is that this virus exists.

If you’re an Og reality TV fan like myself, you probably have fond memories of a show called Flavor of Love. The dating show, which aired for four seasons, featured groups of female contestants competing for a chance to date hip-hop’s most well-known hype man, Flavor Flav. Among those to go down in Flavor of Love history is none other than Shay Johnson. Nicknamed ‘Buckeey’ on the show, Shay appeared on the second season of the show and also went on to appear in the spin-off, Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School. The early 2000s saw a dating show boom, but while series like Next, Flavor of Love, and Joe Millionaire now just seem like poorly aged relics of the past, the Bachelor franchise is still standing. In fact, it remains among the most popular reality shows on television - but unless producers want the show to suffer the same fate of its contemporaries, they need to make some changes. The Bachelor's traditions and tropes feel dated, upholding conservative values more in line with the generations past than that of the majority of the show's contestants.
Case in point: when the latest Bachelorette Hannah Brown reached the end of her season, her two male finalists both planned to propose to her. She is the star of the show; why wouldn't she be expected to propose (if she wanted to) as the male lead of The Bachelor does? Give the girl a chance...

Maxo Kream teamed up with Megan Thee Stallion for his latest single, "She Live," and the two decided to recreate some classic VH1 reality shows for the culture. If you don't remember 2006's Flavor of Love, or the string of spinoffs it birthed - which includes the truly iconic I Love New York - then I'm going to have to demand you go straight to YouTube and live your best life watching all the clips possible.
Megan and Maxo use the classic formula from the aforementioned shows to find love in their music video, though they admittedly have very specific tastes. Happy Monday, "Big Brother" fans. We hope you guys had a fantastic weekend. Today, some crazy, new intel just came in from Newsweek.com . Apparently, another 10 celebrities that could possibly be competing in the second season of CBS' Celebrity Big Brother USA has been leaked! We previously reported that Lindsay Lohan's mother Dina Lohan was reportedly approached by the Big Brother producers with a $100,000 dollar offer to participate in the new season. Now, we've got 10 more people, and they might be a little more close to celebrity status than Dina. I really consider Dina to just be the mother of a celebrity and nothing more. So, CBS was definitely stretching with that one. Anyways, let's go ahead and jump into this possible celebrity list. Please keep in mind that none of these people we're about to mention have been confirmed by CBS or the Big Brother producers. So,...

Looking good, mama! Though Farrah Abraham is typically the kind of person to do too much — from her insane quotes to her mean, stupid pranks to her makeup — in a recent Instagram pic, she stripped it all back and rocked a bare face. And, Tbh, she actually looks kind of stunning??? Of course, we know she's had plenty of plastic surgery, so a naked face is not exactly a natural face in her case, but we're still honestly kind of blown away. We know that we certainly don't look that good mid-workout — especially when our face gets as red as hers is in the picture. Check out her selfie in the video above. In addition to her #nomakeup face, Farrah's also rocking workout gear and a pair of boxing gloves. She's training for her celebrity boxing match with "Hoopz," aka Flavor of Love star Nicole Alexander. "I have muscles sore...

It looks like Farrah Abraham will have a special guest at her upcoming celebrity boxing match! The former Teen Mom Og star has been keeping busy with other work and appearances since she left the MTV reality TV series, and one of her next events is a boxing match against former Flavor of Love star Nicole "Hoopz" Alexander and Farrah's nemesis, Mob Wives alum Drita D'Avanzo, is kind of bummed that she won't get to face off with Farrah in the ring. Watch the video above to see Drita's message to Farrah! For a moment, it seemed like a Drita vs. Farrah boxing match would have actually happened. The former reality TV stars had been beefing for a while ever since they did a joint appearance together for an event in Atlantic City in June when Farrah went on Instagram and called Drita a "has been" and claimed Drita was "unprofessional.
