The lights going out could mean romance or, in the case of National Geographic Channel's "American Blackout," airing Sunday, Oct. 27, chaos.
On this anniversary weekend of Superstorm Sandy, many viewers already know what it's like to wait in endless lines for gas, sputter away on fumes and return to a cold, dark house. In "Blackout," a cyberattack destroys the country's power grids.
The movie uses news footage -- at one point President Obama asks citizens to "stay calm and listen to what public officials are saying" -- mingled with fictional accounts shot in the shaky hand-held style of "The Blair Witch Project."
As a wave of darkness rolls over the country, the film focuses on five separate scenarios: a California couple with a toddler and another child about to be born, Arizona college students stuck in an elevator, a Texas teenage filmmaker, a spoiled couple in a Manhattan penthouse,...

I'll say it right up front. Nat Geo's new movie, "American Blackout" (Sun. Oct. 27 at 9:00 p.m.) is the scariest movie I've seen all year. All. Damn. Year. In some ways, this basic cable entry may be the scariest movie I've ever seen. No, it's not at all gory (though there is a body count). It's not even entirely successful as a film (we'll get into the flaws below). But as a plausible portrayal of how wrong civilization might go after the lights go out (I do not include "Revolution" in the pantheon of plausible portrayals), this movie is going...

National Geographic Channel and Kelton released today results from a new survey gauging the nation’s preparedness for impending disasters. Guess what? We're not prepared! And to really drive that point home, Nat Geo has made "American Blackout" (Sun. Oct. 27 at 9:00 p.m.), a truly terrifying two-hour movie that walks us through what might actually happen if the lights went out. In this HitFix exclusive clip, get...

One of the more notable horror directors of the last 30 years is Joe Dante. Having helmed movies such as Gremlins, Small Soldiers, and Holes. The director has also, over the years, lent his support, by way of taking on the role of producer, to several projects, the latest of which is the psychological horror film Dark. The first feature length film from writer-director Nick Basile, Dark is a horror film centred around the famous North American blackout that occurred in the summer of 2003. Focused on only two performers for the majority of its runtime, the film stars lead actress Whitney Able, who was one of the two principal performers in the Gareth Edwards feature Monsters and is thus no stranger to working in features with a limited cast. Able is joined by Alexandra Breckenridge, who has been seen in numerous tv shows such as American Horror Story, True Blood, and Save Me.
