'War of the Worlds': Production Diaries, East Coast - Beginning (2005)

*** (out of 4)

This 22-minute documentary takes a look at the opening months of production on Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS. We start off getting to take a look at some of the pre-production meetings and from here we take a look at various shooting days during the production of the movie. Spielberg, Cruise and various production members are interviewed as this "video diary" pretty much covers the entire start of the production. The Paramount release of WAR OF THE WORLDS is loaded with extras and this here is the longest. While it does cover some of the same material as other featurettes, there's no question that this diary does a very good job at giving you a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the movie. The highlights are without question the actual footage of the cast and crew working together filming the movie. We get a lot of scenes with Spielberg directing the crew, which is always fun to see. It certainly gives you a great idea of what it's like being on a film set.
