Scoring 'War of the Worlds' (2005)
*** (out of 4)
Steven Spielberg's WAR OF THE WORLDS was a big-budget film but most people seem to think that it was pretty much rushed through production so that it could hit its summer release date. Spielberg is interviewed here and starts off talking about how the film wasn't even complete when John Williams had to start writing the score for it. We hear from the producer talking about how the score and dubbing were happening right up towards the release date. From this point the featurette is turned over to Williams who talks about what he did and didn't want to do with the score and how he did want there to be a brief homage to previous monster movies. Overall this is a fun featurette that has a lot of talk from Williams as he takes us through various aspects of the score and we also get a lot of behind-the-scenes footage showing him recording it.
