There’s no doubt that Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is an A-list star. The professional wrestler turned actor started making waves thanks to The Mummy Returns as the Scorpion King. Terrible effects aside, that skyrocketed him into different roles, and slowly, but surely, Johnson was one of the most well-known names in the mainstream. Johnson was very experimental early in his career; bouncing between comedy (Be Cool), drama (Gridiron Gang), horror (Doom), family (The Game Plan), and Thriller (Southland Tales). We got to see Johnson in sentimental affairs that proved his dramatic chops thanks to films like The Gridiron Gang. His...

Thrusting a cold, hard badass into a domestic setting is a tried-and-true set-up for a mediocre family comedy. Big muscular tough guys like Vin Diesel (playing a Navy-Seal-turned-babysitter in 2005’s “The Pacifier”), Dave Bautista (as a CIA agent looking after a nine-year-old girl in 2020’s “My Spy”), and Dwayne Johnson (as an NFL-player-turned-sudden-father in 2007’s “The Game Plan”) have all starred in movies that follow this dusty formula to a tee.
And every one of these films flounders largely because they rest on a single joke (isn’t it funny that someone so masculine is looking after kids) that isn’t actually all that funny.
To its slight credit, Apple TV+’s new film “The Family Plan” downplays that type of humor significantly; its sole sort of original idea is that its wayward badass Dan didn’t have his domestic life thrust upon him; he actively loves being a dad,...

Arnold Schwarzenegger may have set the standard of an action-tough guy making an unlikely family comedy that features him taking care of children. The comedic dynamic of said concept has so much potential that many have tried their hand at it, including Vin Diesel in The Pacifier, Dwayne Johnson in The Game Plan, Jackie Chan in The Spy Next Door and Dave Bautista in My Spy. Mark Wahlberg is throwing his hat in the ring for AppleTV+’s The Family Plan, which just released its first trailer. The family film os set to release on December 15.
According to People, Wahlberg plays “a suburban dad and car salesman named Dan Morgan — whose secret past as an elite government assassin comes back to haunt him.” The synopsis continues, “When enemies from his past track him down, Dan packs his unsuspecting wife (Michelle Monaghan), angsty teen daughter, pro-gamer teen son and adorable 10-month-old...

Andy Fickman‘s sports family comedy The Game Plan (2007) was his third movie as a director and his all-time highest-grossing feature film. Dwayne Johnson wasn’t always a rock. It was shortly into his career as a WWE (then WWF) wrestler that the actor adopted his famous sobriquet, having initially been named “Rocky Maivia” – a combination of his father and grandfather’s wrestling names. But “The Rock” has always seemed like a suitable aptronym. He’s hard, yes. Chiselled, sure. “Rock” might even conjure some sense of natural majesty – like a great cliff face, perhaps. But when have rocks ever been fun?

Getting romantic dramas made in today’s cinematic landscape is becoming more and more challenging, yet veteran director Andy Fickman, who is currently in production on the buzzy indie “One True Loves,” remains cheerful and optimistic about the genre. “In general, and pretty much short of being a tentpole, it’s very hard to get things made. People aren’t making romantic dramedies that much anymore, but at the same time, there’s a real need for content because of the streaming outlets,” says Fickman, whose energy level remains high even after shooting an all-nighter. Highland Film Group is representing international rights to “One True Loves,” and is co-financing the picture alongside Blue Rider’s Walter Josten. Highland Film Group’s domestic arm, the Avenue, is distributing domestically.

Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s feud during the making of several “Fast and Furious” films has been well documented (and immortalized by The Rock calling out a “chicken shit” and “candy ass” co-star on social media), and now Diesel is owning up to the part he played in stirring up the set tension. It’s just not in the way you might think. As part of a new Men’s Health profile (via Uproxx), the “Fast” actor and producer said the “tough love” he gave The Rock in trying to get a great performance out of him is what led to the reported tension.

Florida Georgia Line member Brian Kelley’s plan to bring a country-music musical to life as a legit stage production is now extending to a movie version that is being developed simultaneously.
Kelley and his partners announced not just a film iteration of “May We All” — whose planned staging has been put off due to the pandemic — but the director who’s been tapped for a movie version: Andy Fickman, whose credits include directing and exec-producing CBS’ TV series “Kevin Can Wait” as well as a number of feature films and stage productions.
The stage version, announced in Variety in 2019, was set for a developmental production at Memphis’ Playhouse in the Square in fall 2020, to have been followed by an official Nashville premiere in 2021. As lockdowns have pushed any of these stage debuts further back, producers decided to move up a film adaptation.

It’s hard to believe that American Pie arrived over twenty years ago as it seems like just yesterday that we were all listening to wild band camp stories and getting hilarious advice from Jim’s awkward father. Over two decades later, the iconic R-rated comedy has spawned multiple sequels and spinoffs and inspired tons of other comedies, but as of yet, we’re still left waiting for a proper American Pie 5.
Whether or not the fifth installment ever happens remains to be seen, of course, but in the meantime, the brand is continuing to pump out spinoffs and the latest is American Pie Presents: Girls’ Rules. As you can see in the trailer up above, it’s not exactly the new outing that fans may be hoping for, but it’s still the first entry in the franchise in quite a long time and looks to be following...

Dwayne Johnson fans who also have Disney Plus, we’ve got news for you. One of The Rock’s most forgotten movies has just arrived on the Mouse House’s streaming service. Race to Witch Mountain is a reboot of Disney’s Witch Mountain franchise that originated in the 70s, about a pair of teenage aliens with psychic powers trying to get home. That central premise is retained for this 21st reimagining that features AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig as Sara and Seth, the aforementioned extraterrestrial adolescents.

It’s been a long and winding road for My Spy to get a release. The Dave Bautista movie was originally set to come out in August of 2019 but was eventually delayed to 2020 where each month, another release date would be scrapped. Then, Covid-19 happened and any notion of a theatrical debut was long gone.
The action comedy was eventually bought by Amazon Studios though and because of this, the movie is now skipping cinemas altogether and is available to stream through the Prime app. For those unfamiliar with it, the film follows Bautista as a CIA agent tasked with spying on a family. Kyra Sedgwick is set to star in the ABC multi-camera comedy “My Village,” Variety has learned.

Andy Fickman will direct and produce the music-driven romantic comedy “Roomies” with Jenna Dewan via her company, Everheart Productions.
Fickman’s Oops Doughnuts’ Betsy Sullenger and Everheart senior VP Jean Song will also produce.

Christina Lauren, the combined pen name of Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings, will adapt their own novel.

Like most famous people, Dwayne Johnson’s Wikipedia page includes a nifty sidebar that includes bare bones facts, like birthday and age, with a couple of lines reserved for “occupation.” Johnson’s “occupation” line is almost amusingly slim — it simply reads, “Actor, producer, singer, professional wrestler,” which is an understated way of saying “this guy does a lot.” And it doesn’t even mention his best-selling memoir, or his charity work, and “professional wrestler” hardly indicates the tremendous success he’s had in the ring.
