Here's a Laurent Bouzereau specialty: end the series of insightful short subjects on the latest Steven Spielberg picture with a epilogue like final word from Spielberg (joined in this case by Tom Cruise) that leads into the credits for the combined documentary. It sort of makes the entire amount of click-able 5 to 10 minute features feel like one big 2 hour documentary. Would have been even better if there was some kind of 'play all' button on there, but alas. I mean, come on, how many times is one going to pop in the extras disc just to watch one particular bit about editing or sound effects or in this case, the sight of Tom and Steve flattering each other?
Tom concludes that he had a lot of fun seeing Steven at work on the set. According to him, Spiel never loses sight of anything and quote 'works fast with a facile mind' unquote. Steven counters by saying that Tom is very easy to work with, and always responses to good ideas because he loves them. Apparently Tom came up with about 20 of them himself every single day. Things get even more profound when Tom mentions that in the directors medium it is the relationship between the actor and director that counts the most. When Cruise makes a picture, he wants to go on a journey, preferably to a place he's never been to before. Likewise, Spielberg claims to be in an experimental phase (in 2002), challenging himself as well as the audience while trying to find himself in his mid 50s. He concludes by calling A.I. and M.R. his experimental pictures. Aha, so that's what that was all about. Unfortunately Bouzereau uses the same behind the scenes footage we've seen a 100 times before on this disc again to cover up the editing cuts in the interviews.
So, basically, this whole piece is all about two of the most powerful people in Hollywood telling the world how much they like working with each other. And to prove it, during pre-production on this picture, Steven cameoed in Cruise's Vanilla Sky; during post Spiel 'directed' Tom in 'Austinpussy' and less than three years later they were doing another Sci Fi picture together.
