R30 is a 10
cmilmerstadt21 January 2006
R30 captures some great performances and a whole lot of energy. It is recorded in hi-def and with great sound quality. Standout performances are found throughout the concert, but especially on Subdivisions, Red Barchetta, Earthshine, Xanadu, and Between The Wheels.

Go out and get it if you are a fan from their 80's-era, or if you're new to the band and learned about them from their more recent releases.

The recording focuses more on capturing the great light show as well as showcasing clear sound quality. Geddy's voice is front and center (unlike the recent "Rush In Rio" DVD) and the audience-level is rather subdued.

R30 is a "10" !

closest thing to a perfect rush album.
Samhain2714 March 2006
This DVD is great. First, don't think since you have Rush in Rio you don't need this one. The quality, set list, and extras are all better. Though there are some songs missing(the 8 or so they didn't put in, plus some other favourites we would've liked to hear) the number of old songs they played totally make up for it. I wanted to see closer to the heart played, but putting the tsunami relief closer to the heart PLAYED WITH BUBBLES totally makes up for it. I don't know how some people rate this lower than Rush in Rio, it is much better. It does lack songs like YYZ, closer to the heart, one little victory, secret touch, freewill, new world man, natural science and la villa, but classic songs like Xanadu, the R30 Overture, mystic rhythms, red barchetta, between the wheels, and subdivisions totally make up for it. Also the older videos on the second disc like la villa, Xanadu, fly by night, closer to the heart, and freewill are an excellent addition to an already spectacular DVD.

There was less audience interference in this one, which made a lot of the songs sound better, but made some of them a bit less enthralling. 2112 was an example of this. in R30 its much more precise and whole, but in Rio it was much more powerful with thousand of fans jumping and shouting.

The acoustic addition of heart full of soul went great with resist. I prefer the R30 heart full of soul better than the studio version.

The quality of playing by all 3 members was better than in Rio. Some say Geddy cant sing like he used to, but i find his vocals better now. The high pitched wailing was awesome, but didn't suit everyone. His voice is a lot more calm and enjoyable now. Alex and Neil were a bit off in their timing in Rio, but they are both spot on here. Der Trommler is by far better than O Baterista(though many of you probably wont see any real difference)

The deluxe edition also comes with the concert on 2 Cd's, which is great, so you don't have to purchase a whole other album to listen to it in your stereo.

I find this the closest thing to a perfect rush album you can get, and encourage everyone to purchase it.

Very good.

I enjoyed this DVD quite a bit. Awesome live performances. The sound is tight and a lot better than Rush in Rio. There aren't as many screaming fans this time though.

My favourite song easily is Subdivisions. Very well played and Geddy Lee's singing is top notch. A lot of the songs I didn't really like before, I grew to love because of this DVD. Rush should get a few awards. I always love to watch and hear them play live. They are pretty much the best live performers out there.

Definitely a great addition to any music DVD collection. A must buy if you're a Rush fan or new to their music.

10/10 it's the bomb.

I never thought much about Rush before seeing the R30 Concert, except for the fact that Neil Peart was a god. However, after watching this blistering performance, which hooks you in like nothing else with its 13 some-odd minute musical jam session which starts it all, I understand why these guys are cultural icons. My only complaint is the unnecessary use of Jerry Stiller (Frank Costanza) at the beginning and end of the performance on the wide screen. I'm sure the Germans were rather indifferent to it, as would anyone would be. But holy crepes, this band is tight as hell. Geddy Lee is flawless in voice and kick-butt bass playing. Alex Lifeson still rocks with sonic ingenuity. And Neil Peart - I can watch just him for the entire show without anything else as he is simply perfect and the best drummer in rock history. Highly recommended to Rush lovers and naysayers alike.

rush gives a wonderful performance for their 30th anniversary for the fans

I am a huge fan of rush and this DVD certainly shows anyone who is or is not a fan, why! From the start of the show to the finish, the band performs their magic as only they know how. Even the introduction which shows all of their albums from start to finish with a nice little introduction by Jerry Stiller which really goes to show how creative they can be. They keep the show at a really nice pace and even give the fans a real treat by bringing back a nice song from Grace Under Pressure called "between the wheels" which surprised and thrilled the fans who had not heard it in years. One of the nicest parts is during the son "by tor and the snow dog", their is a really cute cartoon that show up that really shows the band in a funny and creative light. This DVD even comes with a cd soundtrack for those who want to simply listen to the magic. This is definitely one for anyone who has been a fan for a long time or someone who has just been introduced. It is definitely one for the collection because they made it for the fans!

Thank you Rush!
sarah-60512 July 2006
I attended this show a couple of days earlier in Stockholm and was surprised and delighted to witness Rush give a knockout performance in front of some 17000 people. Surprised because of the huge amount of people attending the concert and because they played FAR better than on the charming, but disappointing "Rush In Rio". Songs like Subdivisions (the greatest song in rock/pop history!), Between The Wheels and Earthshine brought tears to my eyes, and Geddy Lee's singing were much better than on any shows of the 90's.

The R30, DVD concert were as good as the Stockholm concert with a few exceptions. 1. Between The Wheels and Subdivisions were better on the DVD. 2. Animate (the only real disappointment!), Resist and the drum-solo were better on the Stockholm concert. But that is what makes live music exiting, and R30 is still a big 10!

a sensible choice for the die hard fan and the newcomer
dan-144625 August 2006
Whether you are looking to add to your collection or just want to see just who are this band that has eluded you for the past 30 years then this is a great place to start.

Filmed in Frankfurt, Germany towards the end of their European Tour (after the Sold-Out UK tour) this DVD works well in addition to the Rush in Rio DVD as the German filming company had the newest of audio and vision equipment, coupled with an indoor venue (as opposed to Rio where it was filmed in a football stadium), allowing them to produce sound of the highest quality and to output the show in High Definition.

As Alex Lifeson said on the Rio box-set, the equipment the Brazillians had was a little dated, however the Rio DVD has something that no other Rush recorded concert has and, in my experience, only one other live show DVD has, which itself was filmed in Rio (this is Iron Maiden: Rock in Rio) and that is energy from the crowd. I do not believe that any other crowd can be any more entertaining to watch in a recorded concert, I most certainly would love to have the chance to join them one day! For this reason people reading reviews on the Rio DVD should ignore comments about the crowd being in the recording too much, there isn't an easy way of dampening the cheers of almost 60,000 excited people!

My only disappointment with the DVD is the lack of the full concert, I attended the Birmingham show and one of the reasons I bought this DVD was that they cram so many songs into the 3 hours they're live you cannot remember what was played altogether so anyone purchasing this will need to get their hands on Rio too for the awesome opening of Nebbit and to hear Ghost Rider.

Pure goodness...
bloodystool-16 August 2006
Prior to 2004 Rush hadn't toured Europe in about 12 years, and the fans were well rewarded for their patience with fantastic performances. This show is from that European leg of their 30th Anniversary Tour and although it's an incomplete show (as opposed to Rush in Rio (2003), which was the complete setlist), it's still a phenomenal show that's well worth the time spent to watch it. Unfortunately, La Villa Strangiato was left off of the DVD so we don't get to hear the ever-amusing Alex Lifeson rant of the evening. Rush fans will love it (of course), and I would think that even non-Rush fans should enjoy it. L/L/P...

Amazing Musicians and incredible DVD
ButNoMore18 December 2007
These guys are excellent and anything they put out to the public is first class. The musicianship of this band is amazing and we should all be very thankful we live in a world where Rush exists. Future generations will never be able to see such mastery live and in person. Get this DVD and you will enjoy it throughly!! I was recently able to see these incredible musicians play in Houston, TX and was blown away. I have not missed a show since power windows and I have to say that they are better than ever. Everyone should embrace these guys and teach others what real musicianship is! There will never be such a tight and well put together trio again in our lifetime. Lets just hope and pray that they do not retire anytime soon!

Pure RUSH
rwe828327 March 2008
Warning: Spoilers
I saw RUSH live in Chicago during this tour.

This DVD captures the very best of that concert. The opening medley contains songs not heard live for years (including A Farewell to Kings and A Passage to Bangkok) Every time I watch this disk, I am awed by the musical virtuosity of Geddy, Alex, and Neil.

The addition of the cover songs off of "Feedback" was, at the very least, brilliant. To pay homage to the bands they started out, in their infancy, covering in small clubs and bars was one of the highlights of this show. The sight of Alex tweaking Geddy's nose at the end of "The Seeker" is one of the reasons I keep replaying this DVD.

"Between the Wheels" was as much of a pleasant surprise as the absence of "The Trees" was a disappointment, but one must take the bad with the good.

As someone said before me, just because you have "Rush in Rio" is no reason to not have this disk. I prefer the light show in this DVD to RIR, plus I like "Der Trommler" better than "Oh Batterista" (for which Neil garnered a Grammy nomination).

Simply put, if you are a RUSH fan, this is a must have video.

Man, what a show!
Mr-Fusion14 April 2016
I've always been partial to "R30" because it's got my favorite performance of 'Force Ten'. That's the song that ultimately drew me to Rush in the first place, and my love for that bass line will never die. It's crisp, clean and electrifying.

But that just explains my personal bias. This is a Rush concert, after all, which means it opens like a beast with a sweeping overture and sets right to work on the diverse set list. Just as you'd expect. They even throw in a solid cover of The Who's 'The Seeker' for good measure. The band's signature precision is on full display during every minute of this thing. The production values are first-rate, too (some of the camera moves are very nice).

They really put together a nice package.

good but could have been better.
bryce_HUH_what9 September 2006
This is a great concert. Better audio than on "Rush in Rio" but the set-list and vocals are slightly lacking. still a very good Rush concert. despite being 50-somethings now, they are still fun to watch on-stage. There is one song from all albums except "Presto". best songs are "Xanadu", and "spirit of Radio" they have the tightest performance and are truest to the originals. The overture does justice to older songs that were good, but not good enough for geddy to ruin with notes he cant hit. its not his fault but it still sounds bad. A must-have for fans, and a good addition for rock concert collectors or rock enthusiasts. All should watch it at least once!

You Must Rush To Watch Rush R30
denis8887 November 2015
This year, Rush are 40, and a new DVD will be out soon - R40, but not yet, so we look back at R30 - when Rush were 30 years old and were great and perfect to the top. Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart do a tremendous show of all their imaginable Best Of material, starting with an excellent cartoon video, then going through the Medley of their earlier songs and then plunging headlong onto mesmerizing Spirit Of Radio. Each song is a highlight, and I especially recommend Neil's outstanding Drum Solo, which itself is a Suite of several parts and never drags or bores. Even later songs like Earthshine stand out well in comparison with earlier output and they prove that Rush's music will stand the test of time well. Geddy's impossible virtuosity sends me shivers every time I see him playing bass guitar, singing and operating his multiple pedals at the same time. A;ex is as usual cheerful and mighty, while Neil nails it down to make a perfect Trio of all times. 10 out of 10

Perfect!!
Workin_Man4 June 2006
I bought Rush: R30 with high expectations. I took it home and put it into my DVD player. What I saw was nothing I had expected. All the good reviews seemed to be accurate!! Rush: R30 exceeded my expectations immensely!! The concert was amazing!! Geddy, Alex, and Neil are still going strong!! They looked as healthy as ever, they had lots of energy, and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. Which was great to see!! I must say, Rush: R30 was one of my most smartest purchases I have ever made!! It is definitely worth the dough!! So, fans of Rush, I urge you to go out and buy Rush: R30. You will be very glad you did!!

As I said before, the concert footage was amazing!! I have never had so much fun watching a band in concert in my life!! I also liked Rush's choices for songs to play. I couldn't have chosen better myself!! They played a lot of their biggest hits such as, Working Man, Limelight, The Spirit of Radio, Subdivisions, Earthshine, Red Barchetta, Tom Sawyer, and Dreamline. Those are just a few of the many songs that Rush plays in this DVD.

I purchased the Rush: R30 Deluxe Edition. It comes with 2 DVDs, 2 CDs, a book on the concert and Rush's past, and 2 guitar picks that are signed by Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee. I was very surprised with the Deluxe Edition. It is any Rush fan's dream. The special features in this Deluxe Edition are a great thing to have. There are interviews, music videos, and much much more!!
