The Good 'Great Commanders'
Shade24 July 2006
I thoroughly enjoyed this series of six documentaries charting the most famous battles of history's greatest commanders.

They are presented chronologically: Alexander and the Battle of Issus, Julius Caesar and the Battle of Alesia, Napoleon and the Battle of Austerlitz, Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar, Ulysses S. Grant and the Battle of the Wilderness and Georgi Zhukov and the Battle of Berlin. Each programme gives a brief background to the commander and then presents the battle in question through a series of computer graphics and commentary, often from sources written or recorded by participants. Each battle has been highlighted as a pivotal moment in history, such as Julius Caesar at Alesia changing European history through to Ulysses Grant's understanding of the modern concept of 'total war'.

The narration by Brain Cox is excellent and the expert contributors are also very interesting in their observations.

This series would be an excellent addition to anyone interested in military history.

How could you get the name wrong of your chosen subject?! Hiram Ulysses Grant. The S. Did not stand for anything. Shame on the research staff of this series. All through the series there are nopes like this.

Absolute revisionist crap

Warning: Spoilers
Alexander sure Caesar yes just ignoring so many incredible victories, Grant... Ok but Zhukov? The man overwhelmed his enemies with mass firepower... We saw the failed results in Afghanistan, the collapse of the Soviet military in Afghanistan and now in Their present wars. His tactic was massed attack which wiped out millions of Soviet troops. His allowance of abuses of the Germans people probably pushed them to fight harder as opposed to the other allies

But in typical British (yeah our only real victory in the 20th century was an island woth sheep) arrogance they ignore Patton, Abrams, Clark, and hell Schwartzkopf (who won the first modern war with AirLand battle tactics). The result of Schwartzkopf activities was we saw a true victory after the political surrenders for the past 40 years.

OK so they gotta cut a bit of stuff to the left... But come on.
