First appearance of the A-Team's iconic red and black van.
This story was inspired by the November 18, 1978 Jonestown Massacre which resulted in 918 deaths. Californian cult leader Rev. Jim Jones had relocated his group the People's Temple to Guyana in South America where hundreds of them committed mass suicide. Rev. Martin James, much like the real-life Jim Jones, is given to wearing sunglasses and is rarely seen without them. Rev. Jim Jones was more of a charismatic figure, however, and his group played a major role in getting Harvey Milk elected.
When the A Team release the cult members, they immediately express gratitude to their liberators. In real life this is often not the case, and many people continue to stay in abusive cults because they sincerely believe in them. Others may develop Stockholm Syndrome and become attached to their captors. Some of the survivors of the Heaven's Gate cult for example, which committed mass suicide in 1997, still support the group over twenty years after it disbanded and its leader died. It can take years for someone to be deprogrammmed from an abusive cult, and some may even return.
