Lt. Tony Crawford (Jack Lemmon) is an inexperienced officer in the Korean war.
He is so green, his troop take bets as to how long he will last in the month of November.
It does not take long for some of Crawford's men to realise that those picked an early date in November will likely to win.
The troop have run similar bets on other lieutenants.
Crawford gets to hear about this but on a reconnaissance patrol he inadvertently becomes a hero. All because he gave an order to shoot a female civilian, what looked like an elderly woman.
Lemmon was very much in his element as Crawford. It was likely that he would prove his doubters wrong but not in the way he envisaged. The episode shows just how brutal the was can be and how cunning the enemy can be as well.
