The Black Widow's ring
sonnyschlaegel19 April 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Lois is a waitress in a sea food restaurant in Atlantic City. She is timid and being sweated by her boss. And she seems to be too tired by all her work to think of love-making. But when her husband, Herbie, gives her a ring for a wedding anniversary present, the ring turns her into a vamp that is very hungry for love. Herbie has stolen the ring from the wax museum he works for; when he finds out that it belonged to a serial killer called 'The Black Widow', he is very upset...

This is a funny episode in my opinion. Plus I liked the actors - especially Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito - and the ending (when Lois's boss is punished for his arrogance).

I think this story has some similarities to 'Hell Toupee' (#1.21). (Both stories are farcical, and in both stories the trouble is caused by an object that once belonged to a female killer.) So I think if you liked 'Hell Toupee' you'll probably like this episode, too.

Ring of Fire!

It's fun watching the husband and wife team of Rhea Perlman and Danny DeVito play those roles in this episode. Rhea is a timid waitress who is pushed around by her boss. He won't give her the day off for her tenth anniversary. She is so tired they can't have a romantic evening. Before she goes to sleep, however, she give him a trophy that calls him the best husband ever. He has no present but works in a wax museum, and the next day he steals a ring off a black widow character who murdered her husbands by stabbing them. Unfortunately for DeVito, when the ring is placed on his wife's finger, she is turned into a homicidal, knife wielding maniac. The highlight of the show is his effort to try to get the ring off her finger while she uses an arsenal of cutlery to try to dismember him. These two are a joy to watch.

Decent story idea, but the over the top execution spoils it

THE WEDDING RING is an episode of the AMAZING STORIES TV series directed by and starring Danny DeVito. It was based on a story by Spielberg which has some mileage as it's about a cursed wedding ring that once belonged to a notorious murderess who was executed for being a 'black widow'. The ring falls into the possession of a mousy waitress who undergoes a horrifying transformation when she wears it.

DeVito is pretty much the only thing this episode has going for it as the execution of the thing is very poor. This plays out as a loud, brash comedy with overacting in every scene and as such it quickly becomes wearisome. DeVito supplies a little decent character work but his real-life wife, Rhea Perlman, doesn't know when to quit and is exceptionally irritating as a result. It's a pity as the story in a nutshell is a good one and with more restraint it could have been watchable.

Excellent little episode

Just watched this on TV. I suppose having no expectations helped, but this knocked spots off many other high budget comedy horror efforts I've seen. The scene between Lois, tired & careworn, & Herbert, tired but frisky on their anniversary night, was genuinely touching. The love between them looked tender & genuine (incidentally, in real life they've been married for 34 years now). My heart went out to Lois' put-upon timid doormat who looked like .... well, she wouldn't win any beauty contests. BUT the transformation when she put the ring on! Hubba hubba! It just proves it ain't what you got, it's what you do with it. The rest was pretty well what you'd expect - but done with panache. In fact the whole thing was directed & edited with so many nice touches; one that springs to mind was the cuts to the waxwork faces looking at Danny DeVito when he steals the ring.

Brilliant. An unpretentious little gem.

Silly fun

This episode of "Amazing Stories" was directed by Danny DeVito and stars both him and his wife, Rhea Perlman. Seeing and hearing Perlman is interesting, as instead of the coarse and nasty Carla that Perlman played on "Cheers", here she is a very mousy woman....at least for a while.

When the show begins, the couple are coming up to their anniversary. She got him a thoughtful gift but he has nothing for her. In desperation, he brings home a ring he stole from work--and it turns her into a crazed sex maniac!! Can he possibly keep up with this lady or will it kill him?! Or, will SHE kill him? See the show and see what I mean.

This one is played for laughs and it works pretty well. While far from deep or life-changing, it is funny and worth seeing.

Entertaining tale with star power and with a strange twist!
blanbrn28 March 2019
This episode one from season 2 of "AS" called "The Wedding Ring" is well done and acted with star power and it's a tale of mystery which takes a twist. Starring in and directed by Danny DeVito( 1992's "The Penguin" in "Batman Returns" and "Frank" from "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia") is Herbert a guy who earns a living on the Atlantic City boardwalk at a wax museum, and one day he decided to get a strange mysterious like ring. This is a present for his wife Lois(Rhea Perlman who at the time was married to Danny in real life, now both sadly have divorced) who's an over worked underpaid waitress who can't get anytime off from work. However when this ring is presented to Lois wild wicked things start to happen both intimate and in a devious crazy dangerous manner. Only the episode twist as the ring bounces to another hand! Overall interesting and well done episode also look for a guest spot from Tracey Walter(1989's Bob the Goon from "Batman").
