Wesley's best story line
katierose29527 February 2007
Warning: Spoilers
"Loyalty" and the two episodes that follow are really about Wes. From his Watcher days, Wesley has been trying to do the right thing. He's a good man and suddenly he's confronted with some impossible choices. Wes loves Angel. He's loyal to him and his desire to protect Conner is less for the baby's sake than for Angel's. Angel couldn't live with himself if he hurt that baby. For seasons now Angel has been telling his crew that they have be prepared to stop him if he becomes Angelus. Angel is constantly aware of the darkness inside of him and scared that he might hurt someone he loves. I honestly believe that, if someone asked him in a hypothetical, "what if?" sort of way, Angel would have agreed that Wesley's doing the right thing. Only this ISN'T hypothetical and, as Wes's nightmares come true, he's struggling to save Angel and Conner. This really is a turning point for Wes and for the show. This storyline changes everything that comes after it and is some of Wes's best material. I highly recommend this episode.

"Loyalty" revolves around that prophesy Wes translated in "Couplet." It say "The father will kill the son," and he's terrified that it means that Angel will hurt Conner. Prophesies in the Buffyverse are tricky and he desperately seeks out a loop hole. When an all powerful oracle-thing, in the guise of a fiberglass fast-food hamburger statue, tells Wes that "the vampire will devour his child," Wes is torn. Angel continues to bask in fatherhood and doesn't seem dangerous, but Wes knows that Angelus is always inside him. The Hamburger Oracle (who has a better name that I can't remember. Lower or something.) tells Wes to look for three signs. An earthquake, fire, and blood in the sky.

Meanwhilem Team Angel's enemies continue to plot against them. Shajahn seeks out Lilah to enlist her help in destroying Angel. She agrees and even donates some of Conner's blood to the cause. (She's stolen it from his doctor's office.) Holtz continues to plot revenge against Angel. Justine is falling for Holtz and completely dedicated to his plan. They've recruited other would-be vampire hunters and one of them, posing as a client for Angel Inc., sends Gunn and Fred into a trap. The two of them have to fight off vampires at an old merry-go-round.

Wes follows the fake client back to Holtz and confronts him. Holtz refuses to back off of his quest for vengeance and he correctly guesses that Wes is worried that Angel will harm Conner. Wes leaves. Back a the Hyperion, Wes starts confiding in Angel. As he listens to Angel talks about how much he loves Conner, though, he decides that he's been paranoid. He starts laughing with relief. Just then an earthquake shakes the hotel. A gas pipe sets the room on fire. Wes stands there frozen as Angel saves Conner. Angel grabs Wesley and tosses him into the hallway. Wes realizes that Angel is bleeding on Conner's blanket, which is decorated with clouds. With the last sign, Wes is horrified. Then Angel remarks that even if they had been trapped in the room, at least he would have had a snack for later... Conner.

There are some good parts to this episode. I like Wes and Angel visiting Conner's doctor. They're both so cute and panic-y that something could be wrong. And I like this unshaven, slightly harder Wesley. He's always had a unyielding, slightly suicidal mind-set when it comes to doing the right thing. He was rouge demon hunting by himself when he left the Watcher's Council. And, even when I don't agree with his choices, I believe that HE does. When you add in his experiences with his own father and his dedication to Angel's mission, I understand why he's doing all this. Also, this is the first time that we hear about Lilah's mother, which is interesting. It's a shame she doesn't play a bigger role in the series, because it would be interesting to find out more about Lilah's past.

On the down side, my heart just breaks for Wes. I wish that he'd gone to Angel and explained the problem instead of trying to make the tough call by himself.

My favorite part of the episode: Gunn and Angel playing with the itty, bitty hockey sticks.

How to Stop a Prophecy
Samuel-Shovel12 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
In "Loyalty", after translating a prophecy foretelling Connor's demise at the hands of Angel, Wesley attempts to figure out how to prevent the prophecy from occurring. Gunn and Fred try to get a balance between romance and work. Holtz's crew continues to grow; he uses them to spy on and scout Angel and the rest of the gang. One of these henchmen poses as an Angel Investigations client and leads Gunn and Fred into a trap. The two are able to escape unscathed. Wolfram & Hart steal a vial of Connor's blood from the doctor's office; Sahjhan and Lilah team up to take Angel down using this. Holtz offers to help Wesley separate Angel from his child. Wesley learns of the 3 signals that will foretell the prophecy: an earthquake, fire, and blood. All of this happens as the episode comes to an end.

Since Angel's return to Angel Investigations, the gang seems to be pretty tight-knit again. This is the first time in a while that you can feel the distance between everyone. Gunn says he's ready to walk away if it jeopardizes his relationship with Fred. Wesley is considering backstabbing Angel if he feels he needs to for Connor's safety. Cordy is off who-knows-where. They seem to be splintering at the seams a bit. Time will tell whether they will last.

Angel's emotion he shows for his child is very touching in this one. I'm assuming the prophecy has been misinterpreted to this point and some loophole will change the interpretation that Wesley is currently taking. The love he has for Connor is unbounded. Even Darla sacrificed herself for her offspring, Angel would do the same. This was a great character development episode.

Death and divided loyalties
Joxerlives3 March 2012
Warning: Spoilers
LOYALTY

The Good; Really is Wes' ep and he's put through the wringer here. Or so we think, it's nothing compared to what he's going to face...

The Bad; Holtz's spy seems to learn a lot about AI very quickly. Why doesn't Holtz just continue to work with Sahjhan? How can Lilah be so confident in betraying WR&H, what about the mindreaders? Or do they not apply over a certain level of promotion?

Best line: Gunn; (of ice hockey) "You do realise this is the whitest sport known to man?" (obviously never seen synchronised swimming)

Apocalypses: 5

Angel Clichés Inverting the Hollywood cliché; We think Holtz will possibly kill Aubrey for failing him but again he shows great understanding. It's no wonder he commands respect amongst his people so easily (a mirror image of Wes in command?)

In disguise; 8

DB get's his shirt off; 12

Cordy's tatt; 10 no because no Cordy at all for the first time in 3 seasons

Cheap Angel; 9

Fang Gang in bondage: Cordy: 5 Angel: 11 Wes: 6 Gunn; 4 Lorne; 3 Fred; 2

Fang gang knocked out: Cordy: 11 Angel: 14 Wes: 5 Doyle; 1 Gunn; 1 Lorne; 3

Kills: 2 vamps for Gunn and Fred nails her first Cordy: 5 vamps, 3 demons Angel; 39 vamps, 55 and 1/2 demons, 7 humans Doyle; 1 vamp Wes; 12 demons+3 vamps, 2 humans Kate; 3 vamps Faith; 16 vamps, 6 demons, 3 humans. Gunn; 10 vamps+ 9 demons. Groo; 1 demon Fred; 1 vamp

Fang Gang go evil: Cordy: 2 Angel: 2 Gunn; 1 Wes; 1

Alternate Fang Gang: Cordy: 2 Angel: 8

Characters killed: 46

Recurring characters killed; 8;

Total number of Angel Investigations: 7, Angel, Cordy, Wes, Gunn, Fred, Lorne and Groo

Angel Investigations shot: Angel: 11 Wes; 1

Packing heat; Wes; 5 Doyle; 1 Angel; 1 Gunn; 1

Notches on Fang Gang bedpost: Going to add Groo to CC's list and Fred and Gunn to each other Cordy: 4 ?+Wilson/Hacksaw Beast+Phantom Dennis+Groo Angel: 5; Buffy, Darla and The Transcending Furies Wes; 2; Virginia and the bleached blonde Gunn; 1 Fred Fred; 1 Gunn Groo; 1Cordy

Kinky dinky: Lilah turns a guy down at the bar.

Captain Subtext; Wes and Angel really like a gay couple now.

Know the face, different character; 4

Parking garages; 5,

Buffy characters on Angel; 16 Wetherby, Collins and Smith. Angel, Cordy, Oz, Spike, Buffy, Wes, Faith, Darla, Dru, The Master, Anne, Willow and Harmony

Questions and observations; Gunn empathises with Audrey after she talks of killing her son. So does Angel but his words have extra resonance for Wes. Holtz actually shows considerable understanding of AI and Angel also observes that he considers Holtz a good man and justified in his need for vengeance. Lilah talking to her mum is heartbreaking. A staple of fanfic is that no matter what goes wrong for AI Lilah's mum dies and without the need to support her any more she decides to switch sides and help the good guys. How do they twig Aubrey? Has Lorne told them that Holtz is recruiting people like her? Or did Angel's vamp senses simply smell Holtz's scent off her? All the stuff between Lilah and Sahjhan is hilarious. Angel memorised CC's credit card number but in fairness he has given her a big roll of cash for her holiday.

Marks out of 10; 7/10

That the vampire will devour his child is certain. The dark question you harbor is only when
SleepTight6663 May 2007
Warning: Spoilers
That the vampire will devour his child is certain. The dark question you harbor is only when - Despite the absence of 'Cordelia', I think this is one of the best episodes of season 3, I actually hardly notice 'Cordy' not being around. The main source of goodness is 'Wesley', his character was always fascinating, but this episode made him into one of TV's best developed and written characters. He's afraid that 'Angel' might kill his own son and tries to talk to a cranky hamburger and then with 'Holtz', who has an army of people willed with revenge and are all wanting to bring down 'Angel'. 'Shajhan' was also around, he knows that 'Holtz' isn't going to kill 'Angel' anytime soon, so he tries 'Lilah' whom is more than willing to help, I love the chemistry between these two characters. I'm also surprised with how much I love the relationship between 'Gunn' and 'Fred' in this episode, it's something so fresh and sweet, they fit well together no matter what some fans say, I just wish they would have stayed this way. My favorite scene of the episode is hands-down the absolutely wonderful ending with the prophecy coming out as we get the earthquake, followed by fire and blood, it was also one of 'Wesley's finest scenes. The teaser was also fantastic with 'Wes' having a dream of 'Angel' teaching 'Connor' how to die. Brilliant episode all around. LILAH: You don't have an appointment. SAHJHAN: That's it? No 'wow, how did he do that?' No screaming in terror? You twenty first century types are so jaded. LILAH: You're Sahjhan, aren't you? I may be jaded, but I do my homework. And there's a girl downstairs, she's got records on everything that ever happened. My company rocks. (10 out of 10)
