Characters repeatedly refer to "leaving the hatch coaming open," a key part of the episode plot. However, this phrase is nonsense. A doorway on a ship is a hatch. Coaming is the strengthening frame around a hatchway (as well as any part of a seagoing ship intended to deflect water from decks, etc.) The line is equivalent to saying "leaving the door jamb open."
